Overview

The PulseTech Xtreme Charge XC450 (Model: 300X010) is a versatile 4-amp battery charger, maintainer, and conditioner designed for 6V and 12V lead-acid (AGM, Gel Cell, Deep Cycle, Wet, CA/CA, EFB) and LiFePO4 lithium battery types. It incorporates patented Pulse Technology to enhance battery performance and extend life cycles by minimizing damaging lead sulfate crystals. This unique conditioning process, distinct from common "Pulse Charging," applies a high-frequency conditioning pulse on one circuit and proprietary charging algorithms on another, ensuring optimal battery health and significantly improving older batteries.

Function Description:

The XC450 performs several key functions:

  • Charging: It provides a microprocessor-controlled integrated charging process that measures both voltage and current, applying only the necessary charge. It features a 4-amp bulk charge capability for rapid and safe recharging of discharged batteries.
  • Maintaining: The device acts as a maintenance charger, using proprietary charge algorithms and high-frequency pulsing processes to keep batteries safely at their proper operating voltage indefinitely.
  • Conditioning/Desulfation: Patented Pulse Technology actively minimizes and removes lead sulfate crystals, which are a primary cause of battery degradation, thereby increasing performance and extending the life of all supported battery types up to three times.
  • Testing: Upon initial connection, the Xtreme Charge evaluates the battery to determine the appropriate charge rate based on its current capacity and condition. It also includes a "Bad Battery" indication if the battery is faulty and cannot be recharged.
  • Recovery Mode: If the charger loses power and then power returns, it will not automatically resume the previously used mode. For AGM/STD batteries, if the voltage before charging is below 6.15V (6V) or 12.3V (12V), or if the battery enters the voltage stage after charging for 5 minutes, it will enter battery repair mode.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Dimensions: 6.8"L x 3.5"W x 1.9"L
  • Input Voltage: Auto Switching 100-240 Vac +/-10%
  • Maximum Charge Current: 4 Amps +/-10%
  • Battery Capacity: 7Ah to 110Ah
  • Pulse Frequency: 30-40 kHz
  • Functional Output Cable Length: 8 ft
  • Power Cord Length: 6 ft
  • Main Battery Cable Length: 6 ft
  • Lug/Clamp Cable Length: 2 ft
  • Safety Features: Fuse-protected quick-disconnect battery clamps and lugs.

Usage Features:

  • Universal Use: Safe and efficient for a wide range of 6V and 12V batteries, including AGM, Gel Cell, Deep Cycle Lead Acid, and LiFePO4 Lithium types.
  • Connection: Connects red battery clip to the positive (+) post and black battery clip to the negative (-) post. Once connected, plug the charger into a 120V or 240V AC power source.
  • Default Settings: When plugged in, all lights illuminate for 0.5 seconds, and the 12V/STD light is on. The default settings are 12V AGM, which may need to be reset.
  • Fault Indications:
    • "No Connection" (red light) indicates the charger is not connected to a battery or the inline fuse needs replacement.
    • All lights flashing on and off with a buzzer indicate reversed battery clamps.
    • "Bad Battery" (red light) illuminates if the battery is non-rechargeable (e.g., after 31.5 hours of continuous pulsing and charging without reaching 100% state of charge for AGM/STD, or 2 hours for LiFePO4 in soft start, or 10 hours in bulk charge for LiFePO4).
    • If battery voltage is <1V, "No battery" (NO CONNECTION and red light on) is indicated.
    • Over pressure (voltage ≥16V for 12V STD/AGM, ≥8V for 6V STD/AGM, or ≥15V for LiFePO4) causes CHARGING and BAD BATTERY lights to flash.
  • Charging Phases:
    • Soft Start: For low-voltage batteries, it charges with limited current until voltage conditions are met, then transitions to bulk charging. If soft start time exceeds 31.5 hours (AGM/STD) or 2 hours (LiFePO4) without sufficient voltage rise, it stops charging and indicates an error.
    • Bulk Charge: Charges with a limited current (4A±10%). If bulk charging time exceeds 31.5 hours (AGM/STD) or 10 hours (LiFePO4) without sufficient voltage rise, it stops charging and indicates an error.
    • Absorption Charge: Constant voltage charging for at least 5 minutes (12V/STD: 14.8V, 6V/STD: 7.4V, 12V/AGM: 14.6V, 6V/AGM: 7.3V, 12V/LiFePO4: 14.3V).
    • Float Prediction: After charging, if the battery reaches constant pressure point and current is less than 0.8A within 48 hours, DC current and Pulse Charging close for 30 seconds. It can return to step 5 (absorption) if voltage drops below certain thresholds.
    • Float Charge: DC current closes, and pulse charging turns on. Maintains battery at optimal voltage (6.9V for 6V, 13.8V for 12V). If voltage exceeds 14V (7V for 6V mode), pulsing shuts down. If voltage drops below 13.8V (6.9V for 6V mode), pulsing activates. Maximum float charge current is 2A for 4 hours.
    • Cycle Charging/Sleep Mode: After 4 hours of float charging, the system enters sleep mode (minimum 2 hours). Recharge is initiated if battery voltage drops below 12.6V (12V mode), 6.3V (6V mode), or 13.1V (LiFePO4).
  • AC Disconnection Behavior:
    • If clamps are not removed and AC is reconnected, it charges with the original setting (CHARGING, selected mode, and PULSING flashing).
    • If clamps are removed and AC is reconnected, it returns to the default 12V/STD state.
  • Timeout Table: Specifies maximum durations for each charging phase (Soft Start/Bulk: 31.5 hours/max for AGM/STD, 2 hours/max for LiFePO4; Absorption: 12 hours/max for AGM/STD and LiFePO4; Recovery: 6 hours/max for AGM/STD; Float: 4 hours for AGM/STD; Bulk: 10 hours/max for LiFePO4).

Maintenance Features:

  • Durability: The charger is designed with fuse-protected quick-disconnect battery clamps and lugs.
  • Warranty: Comes with a 5-year limited warranty covering defects in workmanship or materials under normal use and service. PulseTech will repair or replace the unit at its option. The warranty does not cover damage from misuse, neglect, accident, alteration, abnormal operating conditions, water damage, static damage, over-voltage, dropping, or unauthorized disassembly/modification.
  • Safety Instructions: Emphasizes crucial safety precautions, including avoiding explosive gases, personal protection (eye protection, clothing, avoiding metal items), proper ventilation, and correct connection/disconnection procedures to prevent electric shock, fire, or injury.
  • Serviceability: Advises against disassembling the charger and recommends taking it to a qualified service technician for repair.
