Overview

The QubEV Universal Electric Vehicle Charger is a compact and affordable charging solution designed for domestic, light commercial, and private use. It offers a universal charging socket and supports up to 7.2kW of power, making it suitable for a wide range of electric vehicles. The device is British by Design, emphasizing its commitment to quality and ease of use.

Function Description:

The QubEV charger provides a reliable and efficient way to charge electric vehicles. It operates on a single-phase 230V AC/50Hz input and supports variable charging currents of 6A, 20A, 25A, and 32A, allowing users to adjust the charging speed according to their needs and the available power supply. The charger is equipped with a Type 2 IEC 62196 charging socket and adheres to Mode 3 charge protocol, ensuring compatibility with most modern EVs.

For safety, the EVON0040 model includes a 1x C40A MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) and a Type B RCD (Residual Current Device) for AC and DC fault protection, respectively. The EVON0010 model relies on external circuit protection. The device features a clear status indicator located above the charging socket, which uses different light patterns and colors to communicate its operational state:

  • No Light: Indicates no power to the charger or a charger fault.
  • Steady Blue: Charger is available and ready for connection to a vehicle.
  • Flashing Blue: Connection is established and okay.
  • Steady Green: Charging is in progress.
  • Flashing Green: Charging is complete.
  • Steady Red: Electric vehicle requires heat dissipation, indicating that charging should stop.
  • Flashing Red: Indicates a fault, and the charger is not charging.

The charging process is straightforward: users first ensure the charger status indicator is steady blue, then insert the cable into the vehicle, followed by the QubEV charger socket. The indicator will turn steady green during charging. To stop charging, the cable is unplugged from the vehicle first, then from the charger.

Usage Features:

The QubEV charger is designed for ease of installation and operation. It comes with an installation and operator's manual, a fixing template, wall plugs, washers, and fixings. The installation process requires careful attention to electrical safety, with a strong emphasis on isolating power before any work begins. Installers must be qualified and competent, adhering to current legislation and the provided schematics (EVON0010 and EVON0040 diagrams are included in the manual).

A key feature is the ability to set the charger's power output using DIP switches located within the Charge Control Unit. By default, the charger is set to 32 Amps, but it can be adjusted to 6A, 20A, or 25A. This flexibility allows users to optimize charging based on their electrical infrastructure and vehicle requirements. The manual provides a record sheet for documenting the AMP setting, name, signature, and date of installation.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the QubEV charger. The manual outlines several maintenance tasks:

  • Regular Cleaning: External surfaces should be cleaned with a damp cloth. Abrasive materials, mineral or petroleum solvents/degreasers, hose pipes, jet washers, or steam cleaners should not be used to avoid damaging the surface finish or internal components.
  • Visual Inspection: The exterior of the equipment should be regularly inspected for visual damage. Any damage affecting safety requires immediate isolation of the equipment and prevention of use until appropriate repairs are completed.
  • Functional Test of Switchgear: If installed, the switchgear should be functionally tested every six months by pressing the test button to ensure it deactivates. Failure to pass this test requires isolation of the equipment until repairs are completed.
  • Electrical Inspection: Annually, the charger and switchgear (if installed) should be electrically inspected by a qualified electrician in accordance with current legislation. A record of these tests and results must be kept.
  • Disposal: In line with European Directive 2002/96/EC on waste electrical and electronic equipment, the device must be collected separately and recycled responsibly. Users are advised to return the device to their dealer or an authorized collection system.

The product is covered by a one-year warranty from the date of purchase against defects in material and workmanship. The warranty requires reporting faulty products to QubEV and obtaining a Return Authorisation number before returning the unit. Improper installation, misuse, lack of maintenance, or unauthorized modifications will void the warranty.
