Overview

The Quick DK Series is a range of vertical windlasses designed for marine applications, specifically for weighing anchor. These windlasses are available in both left-hand (LH) and right-hand (RH) versions, and can be supplied with or without a drum. The series includes various models, such as the DK 3024 DC, DK 3524 DC, DK 4000 AC, DK 5500 AC, and DK HYDRO, catering to different power requirements and system configurations.

Function Description

The primary function of the Quick DK Series windlass is to manage the anchor chain and rope for anchoring and retrieval operations. It is designed to weigh the anchor and should not be used for any other type of operation. The windlass facilitates the deployment and recovery of the anchor, ensuring controlled and safe operations. For optimal safety, it is recommended to install at least two controls for operating the windlass.

Usage Features

Installation:

  • Roller Alignment: The windlass must be positioned by aligning the gypsy with the bow roller. Precise alignment is crucial for correct operation. A positive tilt of up to 10° is allowed.
  • Deck Level: Ensure the upper and lower surfaces of the deck are as parallel as possible. Compensate any differences appropriately.
  • Peak Depth & Roller Height: There must be no obstacles to the passage of cables, rope, and chain under the deck. Insufficient peak depth can cause jamming. A positive chain tilt with respect to the deck level up to 5° is permitted, but negative tilt must not interfere with the windlass base. A minimum depth of 40 cm (16") is recommended for the chain locker.
  • Procedure: Identify the ideal position and drill holes using the provided template. Remove excess material from the chain/rope passage hole and smooth it with marine paint, epoxy resin, or gel. Position the upper part, inserting the gasket between the deck and the base. Fit the motor gearbox flange and connect the gearbox, inserting the shaft. Fix the windlass by screwing nuts onto the fixing studs with the specified tightening torque.
  • Motor Gearbox Position: Depending on the motor gearbox type, a rotation every 45° or 90° is possible.
  • Electrical Connection (for electric models): Connect supply cables from the windlass to the remote switch/reversing contactor unit. Wiring diagrams are provided for various models (DK 3000W, DK 3500W, 220V single-phase DK 3000W, 400V DK 4000W-5500W with EC-BOX, and 400V DK 4000W-5500W with INVERTER).
  • Hydraulic Connection (for hydraulic models): Connect pipes from the distribution valve to the two hydraulic motor flanges.

Operation:

  • Clutch Use: The clutch links the gypsy to the main shaft. To release (disengage) the clutch, insert the handle into the gypsy cover or drum bush and rotate counter-clockwise. To re-engage, turn clockwise.
  • Weighing the Anchor:
    1. Turn on the boat engine.
    2. Ensure the clutch is engaged and remove the handle.
    3. Press the UP button on the control.
    4. Monitor the upward movement of the chain for the last few meters to avoid bow damage.
  • Casting the Anchor:
    • Manually: Disengage the clutch to allow the gypsy to revolve and the chain/rope to fall. To slow down the chain, turn the brake clockwise.
    • Electrically: Press the DOWN button on the control. This provides controlled anchor casting and even unwinding of the chain.
  • Drum Use (for warping operations):
    1. Ensure the anchor and rope/chain are securely fastened to a bollard or strong point.
    2. Operate the brake to lock the gypsy.
    3. Use the lever to open the clutch (at least two bush revolutions counter-clockwise).
    4. Remove the lever, wind the rope over the drum counter-clockwise (at least 3 turns).
    5. Activate the windlass DOWN control, keeping the rope under tension to vary winding speed.
    6. After recovery, engage the clutch by tightening the gypsy bush clockwise and secure the rope to a bollard or strong point.

Safety Precautions:

  • Always stay clear of chains, ropes, and the gypsy.
  • Operate the windlass from a position where the work area can be supervised.
  • Ensure the electric motor is not powered when the windlass is used manually to prevent accidental operation by remote controls.
  • Secure the chain with a retainer before sailing.
  • Do not operate the windlass with electrical power when the handle is inserted in the drum or gypsy cover.
  • Use a suitable power fuse/thermal-magnetic/hydraulic-magnetic protection for the motor.
  • The circuit breaker can isolate the windlass control circuit to avoid accidental activation.
  • Secure the chain to fixed points (chain stopper or bollard) after anchorage. The windlass is not a sole securing device.
  • Isolate the windlass from the electrical system during navigation.
  • This equipment is not intended for use by people with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities (including children).

Maintenance Features

  • Regular Cleaning: Periodically remove salt deposits from external surfaces with fresh water to prevent corrosion.
  • Annual Disassembly: Once a year, disassemble the gypsy and the drum.
    • Drum Version: Use the handle to loosen the bush and pull off the drum. Remove the top clutch cone, undo screws, remove the chain guide cover, retaining screws, chain stripper, gypsy, and bottom clutch cone.
    • No-Drum Version: Use the handle to remove the gypsy cover. Remove the top clutch cone, undo screws, remove the chain guide cover, retaining screws, chain stripper, gypsy, and bottom clutch cone.
  • Lubrication: Clean all removed parts to avoid corrosion. Grease the shaft thread and the gypsy where the clutch cones rest with marine grease.
  • Electrical Contacts: Remove any oxide deposits from the terminals of the electric motor and the reversing contactor unit, then grease them.
  • Professional Servicing: If required, the windlass must be disassembled by qualified personnel. Ensure the motor gearbox is cold before disassembly.
  • Cleaning Products: Use non-corrosive and non-hazardous products for cleaning.
  • Troubleshooting:
    • If the windlass stops and the hydraulic magnetic (or thermal magnetic) switch has not tripped, wait a few seconds and try again (avoid pressing the button continuously).
    • If the hydraulic magnetic switch has tripped, reset it and wait a few minutes before weighing anchor again.
    • If the windlass remains blocked after several attempts, move the boat to release the anchor.

Product Disposal:

  • Dismantling at the end of the product's life must be carried out by qualified personnel.
  • The product is made of various materials, some of which can be recycled, and others require suitable disposal according to local regulations.
  • Do not dispose of the product as domestic waste. Separate products for disposal according to local regulations or return them to the seller when purchasing a new equivalent product.
