Overview

The Quick DV5 DAVE Series is a range of high-quality nautical equipment, specifically vertical windlasses, designed for anchoring operations on boats. This manual covers various models including DV5 1700 DC, DV5 2000 DC, DV5 2300 DC, DV5 3000 DC, DV5 3000 AC, and DV5 HYDRO.

Function Description

The primary function of the Quick DV5 windlass is to weigh anchor. It is designed to handle both rope and chain on a single gypsy. The windlass facilitates the controlled retrieval and casting of anchors, reducing manual effort and enhancing safety during anchoring maneuvers. It is not intended for other types of operations or for sustaining loads in extreme weather conditions.

  • Deck Thickness: 40 ÷ 80 mm (1" 9/16" ÷ 3" 5/32"). Custom shafts and studs are available for greater thicknesses.
  • Weight: Ranges from 33.6 kg (74.1 lb) to 64.7 kg (142.6 lb) depending on the model (with or without drum).
  • Gypsy Compatibility: Supports 10 mm, 3/8", 12 mm, 13 mm, 7/16", and 14 mm chain sizes (DIN 766, ISO, G4, BBB standards) and 3/4" (19 mm) rope. Quick® system ensures compatibility for rope and chain combinations.

Hydraulic Windlass (DV5 HYDRO) Specifics:

  • Motor Type: Reversible gear-type.
  • Cylinder Capacity: 9.6 cc (0.59 in³).
  • Lifting Capacity:
    • 100 bar: 600 kg (1433 lb)
    • 200 bar: 1700 kg (3748 lb)
  • Max. Chain Speed @ Working Load: 40 lt/min = 23 mt/min (9.1 USG/min = 76 ft/min).
  • Flow Rate (Recommended by Quick): 40 lt/min (9.1 USG/min).
  • Maximum Pressure (Recommended by Quick): 200 bar (2900 psi).

Usage Features

  • Installation: The windlass should be positioned with the gypsy aligned with the bow roller. Deck surfaces must be as parallel as possible to prevent power loss. The unit includes a drilling template, handle, bolts, and screws for assembly.
  • Clutch Use: The clutch (7 and 9) connects the gypsy to the main shaft. To release (disengage) the clutch, insert the handle (1) into the bush (3) of the drum (4) or gypsy cover (5) and turn it counter-clockwise. To engage, turn clockwise.
  • Weighing Anchor: Ensure the engine is on, the clutch is engaged, and the brake is released. Remove the handle. Press the "UP" button on the control. If the windlass stops without the hydraulic magnetic switch tripping, wait a few seconds and try again. If the switch trips, reset it and wait a few minutes. If the windlass remains blocked after repeated attempts, maneuvering the boat to release the anchor is recommended. Monitor chain movement to prevent bow damage.
  • Casting Anchor: Can be done electrically or manually. For manual casting, disengage the clutch and release the brake, allowing the gypsy to revolve freely. Turn the handle clockwise to slow down the chain. For electrical casting, press the "DOWN" button for controlled and even chain/rope unwinding. Secure the chain to a fixed point on the boat after anchoring to avoid stress on the windlass.
  • Drum Use (for warping operations): Before warping, ensure the anchor and rope/chain are securely fixed to a strong point on the boat. For independent drum use, lock the gypsy (8) with the brake. Release the clutch (at least 2 turns counter-clockwise), remove the handle from the bush (3), and wrap the rope around the drum (2 turns). Activate the windlass control, keeping tension on the rope. Varying tension allows adjustment of winding speed. Maintain a safe distance from hands and the drum during take-up. After take-up, tighten the clutch and secure the rope.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Always ensure the electric motor is off when operating the windlass manually.
    • Keep body parts and objects clear of moving chain, rope, and gypsy.
    • Secure the chain with a stopper before navigation.
    • Do not operate the windlass electrically with the handle inserted in the drum or gypsy cover.
    • Quick® recommends using an appropriately rated fuse/thermal-magnetic/hydraulic-magnetic circuit breaker to protect the motor from overheating or short circuits. This breaker can also isolate the control circuit to prevent accidental activation.
    • Isolate the windlass from the power system during navigation.
    • Contactor/reversing contactor units must be installed in a dry, protected location.
    • After anchoring, secure the chain/rope to a fixed point (e.g., chain stopper, bollard). The windlass should not be the sole securing device.

Maintenance Features

Quick® windlasses are made from marine-resistant materials, but regular maintenance is crucial to prevent corrosion and damage.

  • Regular Cleaning: Periodically remove salt deposits from external surfaces by washing thoroughly with fresh water.
  • Annual Disassembly and Cleaning: Once a year, the drum and gypsy should be disassembled.
    • Drum Version: Use the handle (1) to loosen the bush (3), then remove the drum (4) and the top clutch cone (7). Loosen and remove the fixing screws (33) of the rope/chain stripper (35), then remove the gypsy (8).
    • No-Drum Version: Use the handle (1) to remove the gypsy cover (5), then the top clutch cone (7). Loosen and remove the fixing screws (33) of the rope/chain stripper (35), then remove the gypsy (8).
  • Lubrication: Clean all removed parts to prevent corrosion. Grease the shaft thread (27, 28, 29 or 30) and the gypsy (8) where the clutch cones (7 and 9) rest, using marine-grade grease.
  • Electrical Connections: Remove any oxide deposits from the terminals of the electric motor and the solenoid unit/reversing solenoid, then grease them.

The manual also provides detailed connection diagrams for various models, including single-phase and three-phase systems, and hydraulic windlasses, along with lists of recommended Quick® accessories for operation. Dimension drawings are included for all models.
