Overview

The Scosche FD5000SW is a factory stereo replacement interface designed for select Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles manufactured between 2005 and 2014, utilizing a CAN Bus Data System. This interface allows for the replacement of the factory stereo while retaining crucial vehicle functions, including power, communication, diagnostic capabilities, and steering wheel control (SWC) retention for compatible aftermarket stereos.

Function Description:

The primary function of the FD5000SW is to bridge the gap between an aftermarket car stereo and the vehicle's complex data and communication systems. Modern factory stereos are often integrated into the vehicle's Electronics Control Module (ECM) and play a role beyond just audio output. Removing the factory stereo without a proper interface can lead to the loss of several essential vehicle functions. The FD5000SW addresses these issues by providing:

  • +12V Accessory Power Retention: Ensures that the aftermarket stereo receives the necessary switched accessory power, which is often lost when the factory stereo is removed.
  • Retained Accessory Power (R.A.P.) Feature: Maintains the R.A.P. function, allowing the stereo and other accessories to remain active for a short period after the ignition is turned off until a door is opened.
  • Communication and Diagnostic Signal Retention: Preserves proper command signals with the host computer, preventing the ECM from storing error codes that could arise from operating the vehicle without the factory stereo. This is crucial for vehicle servicing and diagnostic operations at dealerships.
  • Steering Wheel Control (SWC) Retention: For vehicles equipped with steering wheel audio controls, the FD5000SW allows these controls to function with a compatible aftermarket stereo. This feature enhances convenience and safety by enabling drivers to manage audio functions without taking their hands off the wheel.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Compatibility: Specifically designed for 2005-2014 Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles with a CAN Bus Data System. A detailed list of compatible makes and models is provided, including Ford Edge, Escape, Expedition, Explorer, F-Series Pickup, Focus (Non-Sony system), Flex, Fusion, Mustang, Taurus; Lincoln MKX, MKZ, Navigator, Zephyr; and Mercury Mariner, Milan, Montego, Mountaineer, Sable.
  • Power Output: The Red +12V switched accessory wire coming from the FD5000SW interface is rated at 10 amps. This rating is sufficient for a single aftermarket stereo. Connecting additional accessories to this power source is cautioned against, as it can cause damage to the FD5000SW module.
  • Wiring Standards: The color codes used on the interface harness conform to the standards set by the E.I.A. (Electronics Industry Association). Users are advised to refer to their stereo owner's manual for specific wiring details, as car stereo wiring codes may differ.
  • Components: The FD5000SW system includes an Interface Module (a black plastic box), an Interface Harness with 8-pin, 16-pin, and 24-pin connectors, and a Steering Wheel Control Harness.

Usage Features:

  • Installation Process: The installation involves disconnecting the negative battery cable, removing the factory stereo, matching and connecting wires from the FD5000SW harness to the aftermarket stereo's plug, and then connecting the FD5000SW module and harness to the vehicle's factory harness.
  • Accessory Power and Illumination: The RED +12V accessory wire and the orange illumination wire for the aftermarket stereo originate from the FD5000SW module itself, not directly from the vehicle harness. This ensures proper power management and illumination synchronization.
  • Unused Wires: Any unused wires from the FD5000SW interface harness that do not have a matching color-coded wire on the aftermarket stereo should be capped or taped separately to prevent short circuits.
  • Vehicle "Sleep" State: After reconnecting the battery, it's crucial to allow the vehicle to enter a "resting" or "sleep" state for a few minutes (with no key inserted, doors/hood/trunk open, and all accessories off) before proceeding with the final connections.
  • Steering Wheel Control Configuration: For SWC retention, users must determine if their vehicle has built-in audio control buttons and if their new stereo is compatible. The SWC harness requires specific configuration based on the aftermarket stereo brand. This involves either connecting a 3.5mm male jack to the stereo's SWC input or connecting specific wires (Brown, Gray, Black) to the stereo's SWC input wire. A chart is provided to guide users on which colored loop to cut on the SWC harness for different stereo brands (e.g., Alpine, Clarion, JVC, Kenwood, Panasonic, Sony, Pioneer).
  • Module Placement: The FD5000SW interface module should be placed within the dash cavity during stereo installation. Optional cable ties or double-sided tape (not included) can be used to secure the module.

Maintenance Features:

  • Troubleshooting Support: Scosche provides a TOLL-FREE TECHNICAL HELP line (1-800-621-3695 x1 for general support, x3 for stereo removal steps, and x3 for SWC assistance) for any questions, dash disassembly instructions, or technical assistance regarding the product.
  • Warranty Information: Complete warranty details are available on the Scosche website (www.scosche.com) or by calling (800) 363-4490.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Always disconnect the negative battery terminal before beginning installation to avoid short circuits.
    • Read all manufacturer warnings regarding airbags and electrical systems in the vehicle.
    • It is recommended to use a volt-ohm meter or computer-safe LED probe when checking wiring. Improper use of a test light or grounded light probe can damage the vehicle's computer and/or diagnostic system.
    • Do not make any connections or cuts to wires that are connected ONLY between the FD5000SW interface plug and the vehicle connectors (these are typically under insulating tape).
  • Recommended Accessories: Scosche recommends the FD3090A Car Stereo Installation Kit for mounting the aftermarket car stereo and a TK12A car stereo tool kit for installation.

The FD5000SW is a comprehensive solution designed to simplify the process of upgrading a factory stereo in compatible Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles, ensuring that essential vehicle functionalities are maintained for a seamless integration experience.
