Overview

The Shark Navigator® Upright Vacuum, models NV26 and NV27 series, is a versatile cleaning appliance designed for household use, offering powerful suction for both bare floors and carpets. This owner's guide provides comprehensive instructions for assembly, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting, ensuring optimal performance and longevity of the vacuum.

Function Description:

The Shark Navigator® Upright Vacuum is primarily designed for dry vacuuming of household surfaces. It utilizes a powerful motor and cyclonic action to effectively pick up dirt, dust, and debris from various floor types. The vacuum's design incorporates a main body, a floor power nozzle, a handle assembly, and a super stretch hose, allowing for both upright cleaning and versatile accessory use. The cyclonic chamber and multiple filters work in conjunction to separate dirt from the airflow, trapping particles and maintaining suction power.

Usage Features:

  1. Assembly: The vacuum is designed for easy assembly. Users connect the electrical connection from the power nozzle to the main body, attach the hose from the main body to the power nozzle, slide the handle assembly into the upright unit, and secure it with a bolt. The crevice tool, dusting brush, and cleaning wand can then be stored on the unit for convenient access.
  2. Power and Operation Modes: The vacuum features a power switch with "O - Off," "I - On" (suction only), and "II Brush Roll On" positions.
    • For bare floors, the "I - On" position provides suction-only cleaning to prevent scattering dirt.
    • For carpets, the "II Brush Roll On" position activates the brush roll, which agitates carpet fibers for deeper cleaning. The brush roll only engages when the handle is pulled back and the floor power nozzle is released, a safety feature to protect carpets.
  3. Brush Roll Indicator Light: A brush roll indicator light illuminates solid green when the brush roll is active and functioning correctly. If it turns solid red, it indicates a blockage in the brush roll, signaling the need for inspection and clearing to protect the lifetime belt.
  4. Swivel Steering: The Navigator® series is equipped with swivel steering, allowing for easy maneuverability around furniture and obstacles.
  5. Accessories for Versatile Cleaning: The vacuum comes with a Super Stretch Hose and a Cleaning Wand, which can be used interchangeably to attach various cleaning accessories:
    • Super Stretch Hose: Ideal for extended reach and cleaning areas like stairs, ceilings, or tight spaces. It snaps into a swivel connector and routes under an anti-tip hook to prevent the vacuum from tipping during use.
    • Cleaning Wand: Provides a longer reach for accessories when attached directly to the unit.
    • Pet Hair Power Brush: Designed to effectively remove pet hair from upholstery and other surfaces.
    • Dusting Brush: Suitable for dusting delicate surfaces, blinds, and vents.
    • Crevice Tool: Perfect for cleaning narrow gaps, corners, and edges.
  6. Carrying the Vacuum: The vacuum can be easily carried by the Dust Cup Assembly Handle when in the standing position. Users are cautioned not to press the Dust Cup Assembly release button while carrying.
  7. Cord Storage: The power cord can be conveniently wound around two cord holders (one quick release at the top and a second near the base) and secured with a cord clip for tidy storage.

Maintenance Features:

  1. Dust Cup Emptying: For optimal performance, the dust cup assembly should be emptied after each use or when it reaches the MAX fill line. Two options are provided:
    • Quick Empty: The dust cup is inserted into a trash receptacle, and the door release button is pressed to empty.
    • Allergy Sufferers Option: For those sensitive to dust, the dust cup can be wrapped in a trash bag and emptied outdoors, minimizing airborne dust.
  2. Cyclonic Chamber Cleaning: The cyclonic chamber should be cleaned every 3 months under normal use. This involves pressing the release button, lifting the dust cup lid, removing the cyclonic chamber, and tapping it clean over a trash receptacle. Care must be taken not to damage the metal screen, as this can impair cyclonic action.
  3. Filter Washing: The vacuum includes two foam filters and a felt filter, which should be washed every 3 months and every 12 months, respectively, under normal use.
    • Filters are removed from the filter holder and rinsed in lukewarm water until clear.
    • They must be squeezed dry and air-dried for 24 hours before reinstallation. Heating methods like hair dryers should not be used.
    • It is crucial not to operate the vacuum without all filters in place or with wet filters.
    • The woven exhaust filter, located on the front of the unit, is not recommended for rinsing and is designed to last the lifetime of the vacuum.
  4. Checking for Blockages: Blockages can cause the vacuum to overheat and shut down. Regular checks are recommended for:
    • Dust Cup Air Duct: Located behind the dust cup.
    • Intake Opening behind the Brush Roll: Requires laying the vacuum flat to access. Threads, hair, and debris should be carefully cut away from the brush roll bristles.
    • Floor Power Nozzle Hose Connector: Accessed by laying the vacuum flat and removing the nozzle hose.
    • Super Stretch Hose: Inspected by removing it from both the unit and cleaning wand ends.
  5. Resetting the Motor Thermostat: The vacuum is equipped with a protective motor thermostat that shuts off power if the motor overheats, often due to blockages. To reset, turn the power switch to "O - Off," unplug the vacuum, check for and clear any blockages, wait 45 minutes for the vacuum to cool, then plug it in and turn it to "I - On."
  6. Cleaning the Pet Hair Power Brush: The pet hair power brush has a locking latch that allows the brush housing to tilt open, providing access to the turbine wheel and air passage for debris removal.

This comprehensive approach to usage and maintenance ensures that the Shark Navigator® Upright Vacuum remains an effective and reliable cleaning tool for years to come.
