4. Pen Drive Mechani sm Section
The pen drive mechanism, namely the pen up·down mechanism, comprises a self-holding type
electromagnet,
eject ion lev er, roller lever, and baU-point pens. Pen up and down directions are as
shown
below.
• Pen-up State
The pen retracts when the elec tr om agnet is enc rg ized for 5 ms against the actuator spring, and
held by a permanent
magnet e ve n after the current is cut off after the initial 5 ms.

From its pen-up state the pen descends when a current is impressed to t he electromagnet for 5
ms in an opposite direction to that used for pen retraction. After 5 ms, the pen-down state will
be main!ained by !he actuator spr in g force.

The color ch ange mechanism sect io n consists of the X-direction d ri ve mechanism, a pen holder and
holder stopper,
both in !he slider unit, and projeccions inside the holding plates. The operating
principles are explained below.
