USE
OF
PARENTHESES
A problem which emerges as we
inv
estigate compound calcul
at
ions
is
that
of
pri
or
ity. For
instance, the
exp
ression 5 - 3 / 4 can be read
two
ways: (5 minus 3) divided
by
4, in which case
the answer
is
.
5.
or
5 minus (3 divided by 4), in which case the answer
is
4.25
.
Located in the first row
of
keys are the parentheses which
you
can use
to
clarify such
ambiguities. Run
the followi

calculations:

SHARP is predisposed (has "default" priorities)
to
perform some calculations before others
(for a
complete listing
of
the order in which SHARP calculates, see Appendix 0). Division and
multiplication will be carried
out
before subtraction a
nd
addition, unless pare01hes
es
are used
to
dire
ct
a different ordering. Thus SHARP
is
built
to
interpret the first equati
on
above as being
equal
10
the second rather than
to
the third.
To
make sure
that
the answer SHARP gives
you
is
the
one
you need, use parentheses to indicate the proper order in which it should perform calcul
tions.
SHARP can
in
terpr
et
several layers
of
parentheses as in
th
is problem:
