The ar gumen 1t in th is function is any character string or a character st ri ng variable na me. The
value return t! d by this function is th e CO (responding ASC II code for the fi rs t character of the
spe ci fied string.

In the above exa mple XS is assigned the va l ue o.f the character string "PAT TI" . Tho ASC fun ct ion
takes the first c lil aracter IP) and converts it to its ASCII code (801.
