Press t he Le ft Arrow key once and notice the manr> er in which the cursor changes. Th is
"F las hin g grid" form of the cu rsor allo ws you to see th e charac te r at the curren t cursor position.
Pre
ss the Left Arr ow key repeatedly (or h old it dow n) until cursor is positioned over th o N. (If
yolJ accidentally pass the N, move the cursor forward again with the Rig ht Arrow key).
Type a T. The T replaces the N and the cu rso r moves forword. This should not be surprising
if you remember that th e cursor indicates where the next character will be placed.
Type these charact ers:

As the display illustrates, charact ers wh ich have b~n typed over are gone forever.
In
addition to backspacing, the Left Arrow key has a second use, the DELete function whose
abbreviation is i nsc ribed above the key. To de l ete a character, place the curs or on th o doomed
character and press I s. mFT ) (01L) •
Le t' s try it: move the cursor back to the W and press the se quence ' '""" I@ four times.

H.2. Right Arro w/ INS ert key
As we have already seen. (sorry to ruin the surpriw) the Righi Arrow key moves th e cursor
forword
without erasing characters. Like the Lef t Arrow, the cursor will move repeat edly if the
key is he ld down .
Move
the cursor to the end of the line.
The second funct ion for the Right Arrow key gives us th e ability to INSert charac ters with in
u typed line. Th is feuture is handy for th ose of us who tend to forget little things (like letters and
words).
Move
the cursor back to the H in HAT. Type th o seQuence SHI FT INS four time s and watc h
the present charact ers shift to the right. The new bo x· l ike characters which have app eared ca n be
thought of as "placeholders." These "place holders" can be filled with new informuti on .
