Overview

The Sizewise NPT3™ is a pressure redistribution system designed for the prevention and treatment of pressure injuries. It can operate as a non-powered static system or, with an optional control unit, as an active alternating pressure system.

Function Description:

The NPT3 system consists of a non-skid mattress base, a series of foam-filled air chambers, a foam cavity, and a low-friction, anti-shear top cover. A gel-infused viscoelastic comfort layer foam topper is laminated to the top of the foam cavity, serving as the primary support surface. Bolsters at the sides and ends of the mattress provide added patient stability and positioning. The system also features a tapered heel section to reduce pressure on the sensitive heel area. The air cells run laterally within the mattress.

In its non-powered configuration, the NPT3 provides zoned pressure redistribution. When the optional control unit is utilized, the mattress converts to an active alternating surface, offering alternating pressure redistribution with cycle times of 10, 15, 20, or 25 minutes. The control unit first inflates all mattress air cells to 30mmHg before entering alternation mode. Inflation levels are designed to maintain low interface pressures throughout the mattress, redistributing peak pressures as the cycle alternates and preventing further tissue breakdown. The gel-infused memory foam topper enhances microclimate control and patient comfort by maintaining a thermal neutral surface temperature of 85-87 degrees Fahrenheit. The polycarbonate top cover, in conjunction with the Mattress Asset Protection (MAP™) Liner, reduces shear during patient repositioning or transfer.

  • Air Cells: 70 Denier Nylon / Polyurethane Foam Filled
  • Foam: High-Density Polyurethane Open Cell Foam
  • Mattress Cover: Extreme Polycarbonate, a bacteriostatic, flame-resistant, fluid-resistant, tear-resistant, cleanable, and replaceable polycarbonate-polyurethane material blend with superior chemical resistance to hospital cleaning protocols.
  • Control Unit (optional): Provides 10, 15, 20, or 25 minute cycle times.

Usage Features:

  • Setup: The mattress is installed on the bed frame with the sloped heel section and connectors at the foot end. If using the control unit, it should be hung on the bed or placed on a stable horizontal surface, not on the floor. Hoses connect securely to the mattress and control unit.
  • Control Unit Operation:
    • Master Power Switch: Turns the unit ON/OFF. A beep sounds at start-up.
    • Alternating Pressure Mode: Default mode when powered ON.
    • Cycle Time/Pressure Level Adjustment: Adjustable via the touch panel. Recommended to start at a low pressure setting.
    • Quick Deflation: Turn power OFF and remove hoses from the control unit.
    • Low Pressure Alarm: Sounds if the mattress doesn't reach 30mmHg within 45 minutes of turn-on or if pressure drops during normal operation. The alarm can be silenced and reset.
    • Autofirm: Inflates the mattress to maximum firmness for 30 minutes, then returns to the previously set level. Useful for patient repositioning.
  • Patient Care Functions:
    • Placing Patient: Position the patient in the center of the bed. Initialize soft/firm settings. Allow 2-3 minutes for pressure redistribution. Elevate the head of the bed to at least 30 degrees. Visually inspect cell inflation and adjust airflow incrementally until the patient no longer feels the bed frame.
    • Positioning Patient: Use Autofirm mode to firm the mattress, facilitating repositioning. After repositioning, press Autofirm again to return to previous settings.
    • Prone Position: Decision to position a patient prone should be at the discretion of the facility's medical staff.
    • Bedpan Placement/Removal: Position hips over the center, use Static Mode, lower pressure with Firm/Soft button. Turn patient to side-lying for bedpan placement. Adjust firmness as needed. Logroll patient off bedpan for removal. Always remove the bedpan before entering Alternating Pressure mode.
    • Removing Patient: Use Autofirm mode for lift and transfer. For mobile patients, lower firmness to the lowest setting to soften the middle, creating a stable platform for egress.
  • Safety Tips:
    • NPT3 is one element of care; frequent repositioning, skin assessment, wound treatment, and nutrition are also crucial.
    • Ensure the power cord is plugged into a properly grounded AC 110V outlet.
    • Be mindful of the seven zones of bed rail entrapment and FDA guidelines.
    • Do not leave patients unattended with side rails down.
    • Medical equipment should not be stacked or located near devices that may create electromagnetic interferences.
    • Using non-manufacturer cables/accessories may affect EMC performance and void warranty.
    • Do not use the device if the power cord is cut, frayed, or loosely connected.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning Instructions:
    • Wear gloves and protective clothing.
    • Do not autoclave.
    • Improper cleaning/rinsing or incorrect use of agents can damage fabric.
    • Monitor contact time, dilute solutions per manufacturer instructions, and rinse covers after every cleaning cycle.
    • Only the outer cover requires cleaning; disassembly of internal components is not recommended.
    • Do not use harsh solvents or cleaners, or puncture the mattress.
    • Polycarbonate/Polyurethane Mattress Top Cover: Resistant to hospital cleaners based on chlorine, alcohol, peroxide, quaternary ammonium, chloramine, and phenol.

  • Filters:
    • Factory Filter: Clean weekly with disinfectant solution. Replace every 6 months.
    • HEPA Filter (optional): Aids in contamination control; does not filter gases or odor. Must be used with the original equipment filter. Ensure factory filter is dry before placing HEPA filter. Replace monthly.
    • HEPA Filter Installation: Requires PPE (mask, gloves, protective clothing). Ensure unit is off and unplugged. Locate and remove vented filter cover, remove factory filter, ensure HEPA filter is clean, place HEPA filter on front of factory filter, re-install filters and cover.

    • Store flat on a clean, level surface. Do not store other equipment on top.
    • Do not expose the control unit to humidity greater than 95%.
    • Dispose of products according to local laws and regulations.
    • For storage longer than 30 days, remove HEPA filter, seal it in an airtight plastic bag, and reinstall when operating again.
