TROUBLESHOOTING AND FAQ

Overview

The Salt3 Integrated Salt Ozone System is a comprehensive pool and spa sanitation system that combines a salt chlorine generator with an ozone generator to provide a multi-layered approach to water treatment. This system aims to reduce reliance on traditional chlorine, improve water quality, and simplify pool maintenance.

Function Description:

The system operates by generating both chlorine from salt and ozone, which are powerful oxidizers and sanitizers. The salt generator converts dissolved salt in the pool water into chlorine, which then sanitizes the water. The ozone generator produces ozone gas, which is injected into the pool water through a venturi injector. Ozone is a highly effective sanitizer that oxidizes contaminants, breaks down organic matter, and kills bacteria and viruses, often more efficiently than chlorine alone. The combination of salt chlorine and ozone provides a robust and continuous sanitation process, leading to cleaner, clearer water with fewer chemical demands. The system is designed to run in conjunction with the pool pump and filter, ensuring that treated water is circulated throughout the pool.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • PVC Pipe Connections: 2-inch PVC pipe.
  • Input Power: 120/240VAC, 50/60Hz (US).
  • Power Consumption: 100-240 Volt, 50/60Hz; 2.0/1.1 Amp (for combined salt and ozone generators).
  • Maximum Operating Pressure: 50 psi.
  • Operating Flow Range: 20-100 gpm.
  • Optimum Salt Level: 3500 PPM.
  • Optimum Free Chlorine: 1 PPM.
  • Optimum pH: 7.2-7.6.
  • Optimum Total Alkalinity: 80-120 PPM.
  • Optimum Chlorine Stabilizer: 40-60 PPM.
  • Calcium Hardness: 200-400 ppm.
  • Copper: Less than .4 ppm.

Usage Features:

  • Integrated System: The Salt3 system combines both salt and ozone generation into a single, integrated unit, simplifying installation and operation.
  • Generator Assembly: The generator assembly, including the ozone generator, wiring junction box, and salt generator power supply, is designed for vertical wall mounting close to existing pool equipment and power sources. It features predrilled mounting holes for easy installation.
  • Manifold Assembly: The manifold assembly, comprising the salt cell, ball valve, flow switch, and venturi injector, is mounted horizontally after all other pool equipment. This configuration ensures proper water flow and ozone injection.
  • Flow Sensor: The system includes a flow sensor to ensure the cell operates only when there is sufficient water flow, preventing hazardous conditions and protecting the equipment. The flow sensor cable connects to the power supply, and polarity does not matter for its connection.
  • Ozone Tube Connection: A dedicated ozone tube connects the ozone generator to the venturi injector, with a check valve in between to prevent water backflow into the generator.
  • Electrical Connections: The system can be wired for both 120V and 240V installations, with or without a timer. Detailed wiring instructions are provided for connecting the power supply box to the timer or circuit breaker panel, ensuring proper grounding and load connections.
  • Startup Procedure: Before starting the system, it is crucial to add salt to the pool water. The "Low Salt" light may remain lit for up to 24 hours until the salt is fully dissolved. During startup, the flow switch light on the salt generator power supply should be triggered by closing the ball valve 90% to achieve the correct flow. Adjustments to the variable speed pump (if applicable) are recommended to achieve an output setting of 2-3 lights on the salt generator.
  • Ozone Injection Verification: Small bubbles entering the pool indicate proper ozone injection. Suction at the venturi can be checked by placing a finger over the barbed opening; a noticeable pull indicates suction is present.
  • Initial Water Treatment: Before activating the equipment, it is important to balance the pool water chemistry, including total alkalinity, pH, calcium hardness, and copper levels. A low chlorine residual (0.5 - 1.0 ppm) should be established. The entire system (pump, filter, and oxygen generator) should run continuously for 48 hours or longer until the pool water is perfectly clear.
  • Optimal Operation: The system is recommended to run 8 hours daily with 2-3 LED lights illuminated on the salt system. A low chlorine level of up to 2-3 ppm should be maintained.
  • Compatibility: The system is designed to work with most pool chemicals, including chlorine. However, it is explicitly stated that the system is NOT compatible with Biguanide products or Bromine-based sanitizers.
  • Return Fountain Advisory: To maximize the effectiveness of ozone, return fountains should be removed, and return fittings should be angled down and to one side (45 degrees) to create a circular flow and keep oxygen bubbles submerged in the water for longer.

Maintenance Features:

  • Salt Level Monitoring: Constant monitoring of the pool's salt level is essential for efficient system operation.
  • Cell Monitoring and Cleaning: The salt cell should be monitored monthly for calcium buildup. Depending on water quality and hardness, more frequent cleaning may be necessary.
  • Cell Cleaning Procedure:
    1. Remove the cell from the line by unthreading barrel unions (electrical wires can remain connected).
    2. Remove the black O-ring from one end of the cell.
    3. Attach the Cell Cleaning Cap to the other end.
    4. Pour either undiluted white distilled vinegar or a diluted muriatic acid solution (1 part muriatic acid to 4 parts water) into the cell. Always add acid to water, never water to acid.
    5. Allow foaming to stop (5-10 minutes for muriatic acid; longer for vinegar).
    6. Safely dispose of the acid solution by pouring it into the pool.
    7. Rinse the cell with a water hose.
    8. Re-install the O-ring and the cell in the line.
    9. Ensure cell cable connectors are clean and free of debris before reconnecting.
  • Winterizing: Similar to pool plumbing, the system's components can be damaged by freezing temperatures. All water should be drained from the pump, filter, cell, and supply/return lines if severe or extended freezing conditions are possible.
  • Water Testing: Weekly water testing at home is recommended, with a professional lab test monthly.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides guidance for common issues such as the oxygen generator not working (check GFCI, breaker, outlet), no bubbles despite the light being on (check filter, pump, venturi suction), cloudy/green pool water (check filter, pump, oxygen generator light/bubbles, run system on "Boost").
  • Filter Maintenance: The system's enhanced oxidation may lead to more impurities being filtered out, potentially increasing the frequency of filter cleaning.
