Function Description
The Sony Remote Commander is a universal remote control designed to operate various audio/video components, primarily Sony devices, but also programmable to control non-Sony components. Its main function is to provide a centralized control interface for a home entertainment system, allowing users to manage multiple devices from a single remote.
Key functions include:
- Component Selection: Users can select and control different components such as VCR, DVD player, LD player, TV, cable box, satellite tuner, tape deck, MD deck, CD player, DAT deck, and projector.
- Basic Operations: It supports standard playback controls like play, pause, stop, fast forward, rewind, skip tracks, and search.
- Volume Control: Master volume adjustment for all speakers, as well as individual level adjustments for rear and center speakers.
- Sound Field Selection: Access and select various sound fields (e.g., Stadium, Game, Jazz, Cinema EX. A/B/C) to enhance the audio experience.
- Tuner Control: Direct tuning mode, preset station selection, and memory page selection for radio stations.
- Menu Navigation: On-screen menu display for compatible receivers, VCRs, DVD players, and SAT tuners, allowing navigation and selection of menu items.

- Macro Play: Program a sequence of up to 8 infrared (IR) codes into two macro lists (MACRO 1 and MACRO 2), allowing multiple commands to be executed with a single button press.
- Auto Power Function: Automatically turn on appropriate Sony AV components and switch the TV to the selected input mode when a video function is selected on the remote.

Users can assign any component to USER 1 and USER 2 items in the IR SET list.
- System Standby: A combined I/O switch (AV I/O and I/O) allows turning off the main component and other Sony audio/video components simultaneously.
- SUB Button: Displays a list of operations for which corresponding buttons are not found on the remote, providing access to a wider range of functions for each component.
- Wait Time in Macros: Allows specifying a 1 to 10 second delay between IR codes in a macro sequence, useful for components that require time to process commands.
Maintenance Features
- Battery Replacement: The remote requires three LR6 (size-AA) alkaline batteries. Under normal conditions, batteries should last about 3 months. Users are instructed to replace all batteries with new ones when the remote no longer operates the receiver.
- Battery Care:

- Do not mix new and old batteries.

- Troubleshooting Guide: The manual includes a troubleshooting section to help users remedy common issues such as the remote not functioning (e.g., pointing at the sensor, obstacles, weak batteries, incorrect function selection) or the "low battery" indicator appearing.
- Clearing Memory: The remote's memory, including all programmed data, can be cleared through a specific procedure in the SET UP menu.
- IR Sensor Awareness: Users are advised not to expose the receiver's remote sensor to direct sunlight or lighting apparatuses to prevent malfunctions.
- Speaker Protection: Before turning on the receiver, users are reminded to turn the MASTER VOLUME control to the leftmost position to avoid damaging speakers.
