reproduction from SQ, other type matrix, and discrete four-
channel programs.
The
original
ambience
of
concert-hall
music
comes
from
the
reflected
sound
that
has
hit
the
walls,
ceiling
and
bounced
back
to
the
listener.
With
this
ambience,
the
music
is
rich
and
brilliant
with
profound
spatial
feeling.
Two-channel
stereo
gives
us
this
sense
of
presence
to
some
extent,
but
not
enough.
By
fteproducing
sound
over
four
widely-separated
speakers,
four-
channel
stereo
not
only
provides
direct
sound,
but
also
re-
creates
the
ambience
pattern
as
it
actually
exists
in
a
concert
hall!
Furthermore,
four-channel
stereo.
also
gives
‘composers
and
recording
directors
a tool
to
create
new
musical
effect
by
enveloping
the
listener
with
360°
sound.
The fundamental four-channel system is “discrete” recording.
But, the “discrete” approach has some big limitations: Putting
discrete four-channel sound on a disc requires the user to install
new, costly, high-precision playback equipment. Moreover, this
type of signal cannot be used as a program source for fm
stereo broadcasts. {t is practical only on magnetic taper” ~d
even there it reduces by half the amount of music that ca. ve
put on a given amount of tape.
CBS laboratories developed a coded matrix system, “SQ”, and
Sony has developed the hardware which can get the utmost
from the SQ system. With the advanced circuitry of front-back
logic and waveform comparator logic, the SQD-2020 maintains
sufficient channel separation to “localize” the musicians where
they belong. You will hear music indistinguishable from the
original master tape and feel that you are actually in a concert
hall. Another benefit of this system is that SQ allows four-channel
sound to be broadcast through any fm multiplex system, and
even
conventional
two-channel
programs
sound
better
in
this
system. Also, this system has true compatibility with conven-
tional two-channel stereo.
The connection and the operation of the SQD-2020 are quite
easy if you read through this manual and make each step as
