SPECK “BÜFFEL” Pumps and Pump Units
BS15, BS25, BS40, BS50
1. In General
Every individual pump undergoes a lengthy test-run before leaving our factory. The assembled pump units comply with
the EC guidelines for machinery, 89/329/EEC, Annex II, A.
1.1 Application
SPECK piston pumps are for pumping drinking-water and domestic water and find their use in:
• Single & Multi-storey Houses • Agriculture/Farming • Shipping • Industry • Horticulture
Standard piston pumps and pump units are not to be used for conveying any medium other than water, except if
written consent is given by the manufacturer. Special versions are built by us for pumping other media.
1.2 Economy
Speck piston pumps save energy. They only require 0.25 kW/h to pump 1 m
3
of water. The comparatively high price of
a piston pump is rewarded in time by its low power consumption and long working life.
1.3 Accessories
A belt-guard is available for V-belt drive. The law on technical appliances obligates the manufacturer to always supply
a belt-guard, even for pumps without motors. Please note this when ordering.

Overview

The SPECK "BÜFFEL" series of pumps and pump units are designed for pumping drinking water and domestic water, finding application in single and multi-storey houses, agriculture, shipping, and horticulture. These piston pumps are specifically engineered for water conveyance, with special versions available for other media upon manufacturer's consent. Each pump undergoes a rigorous test-run before leaving the factory, and assembled pump units comply with EC machinery guidelines (89/329/EEC, Annex II, A).

Function Description:

The "BÜFFEL" piston pumps feature a double-helical precision gear system known for its quiet operation and long service life. The gear is lubricated by an oil-dip bath with a flooded crosshead. Suction and discharge connections are interchangeable and located on the valve casing. Key components like the valve casing, air chamber, stuffing box, and cylinder cover are constructed from grey cast iron (GG20). The brass suction and discharge valves (two of each) are easily accessible by removing the air chamber, eliminating the need to remove the suction/discharge line. The solid conrod is made of bronze (G-CuSn10), and the brass cylinder sleeve can be removed using set-screws. The duo-piston is made of NBR rubber, and Teflon-impregnated packing rings are used for piston rod sealing in the stuffing box. A built-in diaphragm safety valve protects against excess pressure by circulating surplus water back to the suction side if pressure becomes too high.

Pump units, referred to as "Büffelpumpe," are complete systems mounted on galvanized horizontal pressure tanks, ready for connection. They include an electric motor, V-belt pulleys, V-belts, a belt-guard, an automatic air volume control, a pressure switch, a pressure gauge, and a built-in safety valve. The automatic air volume control in the pressure tank ensures the correct ratio between water content and air cushion. When the tank is half full, the float-activated valve opens, and the pump conveys both air and water into the tank. A suction head of approximately 4-6 meters is required for the pump to draw in air properly. As water leaves the tank, the pressure drops until it reaches the automatic switch-on point, activating the motor/pump. Water is then pumped in until the switch-off level is reached, repeating this cycle at irregular intervals based on water withdrawal.

Pressure Switch Adjustment Values:

  • 4 bar Pump Unit: Switch-On Pressure: 2 bar, Switch-Off Pressure: 3.5 bar
  • 6 bar Pump Unit: Switch-On Pressure: 3 bar, Switch-Off Pressure: 5.5 bar

Usage Features:

  • Energy Efficiency: Speck piston pumps are energy-saving, requiring only 0.25 kW/h to pump 1 m³ of water.
  • Installation: Pump units with horizontal tanks are supplied ready-assembled and do not require a special foundation, though they can be fixed with 4 spacer blocks. Units with vertical tanks require on-site setup by a plumber.
  • Location Requirements: The installation room must be frost-proof, dry, and well-aired to prevent moisture condensate, which can damage the motor. Drainage plugs (15) should be removed in case of frost, and the piston chamber emptied by closing the suction line and running the pump for approximately 30 seconds.
  • Safety: A belt-guard conforming to trade union and/or general safety rules must be installed. The pump motor must be protected by a correctly adjusted motor protector.
  • Suction Line: Proper functioning relies on well-laid suction lines, rising gradually from the well to the pump or laid horizontally to prevent air pockets. Lines must be seal-proof, with an inner diameter at least as large as the pump connection. Only bows should be used, not elbows. A foot valve or intermediate valve is advisable for closed filter wells. For suction lines longer than 30m, a suction air chamber should be installed directly in front of the pump. Heavy suction lines for vertical tanks should be supported.
  • Suction Head: The total gauged suction head (height between water level and pump plus friction loss) should not exceed 7.5m. For short suction lines or input pressure, a shut-off valve (not tilted seat-valve) must be installed before the pump to prevent water-hammer.
  • Discharge Line: Ideally, the discharge line should rise gradually from the pump to the tank or be horizontal, never sloping downwards. Only curved joints should be used, with elbows only after the tank.
  • Valve Interchangeability: The suction and discharge sides of SPECK "Büffel" pumps can be interchanged by converting the valves, which can simplify installation. Clean valve seals and proper valve seating are crucial. After interchanging, the air chamber must be turned 180° so the safety valve is on the discharge side.
  • Filling: The crankcase should be filled with SAE30 quality oil through the opening above the crosshead. The pump head should be filled with water via the filler plug (33), while manually turning the V-belt pulley (18) in the direction of the arrow. For long suction lines, fill up to the foot valve/intermediate valve.
  • Motor Alignment: Ensure the pump pulley and motor V-belt pulley (18/18b) are in line to prevent premature belt wear.
  • Electrical Connection: Electric motors must be connected according to the circuit diagram in the terminal box by qualified personnel.
  • Start-up: Open shut-off fittings and taps in the discharge line to allow air to escape. Check motor rotation direction; reverse polarity if incorrect. Close the shut-off fitting only after water is being pumped and the suction line/pump are vented.

Maintenance Features:

  • Lubrication: The gear is automatically lubricated. Oil level should be checked every three months and topped up if necessary (oil visible through indicator glass 24). The first oil change is after 3 months of operation, then every 2 years, or every 6 months if running continuously. This involves unscrewing the indicator (24) or screw (16), draining old oil, cleaning the crankcase (removing gear cover 2), and refilling with fresh oil.
  • Stuffing Box: The compact stuffing box, made of Teflon-impregnated packing rings and a seal ring, requires minimal maintenance. It must not run dry; isolated drips are normal for lubrication and cooling. If continuous dripping occurs, tighten the stuffing box nut (6a) by about 1/2 turn. If this doesn't stop the leak, the entire stuffing box (6d) and seal ring (6b) must be replaced. The lip ring spring of the seal ring must face the piston.
  • V-Belts: V-belts (34) should not be overtensioned but should be tightened after a few days of operation. When replacing V-belts on multi-belt drive, the complete set must be replaced.
  • Gear: With proper lubrication, further maintenance is generally unnecessary. The connecting rod may need readjusting after approximately 1 year if a knocking sound is heard. This involves unscrewing the self-locking hexagon nut (17c), screwing out the inner hexagon tension screw, and removing 0.1-0.5mm of spacer shims (405) as needed. After readjustment, check for overheating after about 1 hour of operation.
  • Air Replenishment: For cold water operation, the snifting valve regulates air in the air chamber and pumps air into the pressure tank. If the automatic air volume control needs repair, an instruction sheet (D10672) is available.
