3.3 Gearbox
Condition Cause Remedy
Loud noises Ball bearings damaged or worn Check ball bearings in clutch
housing / gearbox housing and
replace if necessary.
Pinion / output shaft or spur gears
damaged or worn
Replace pinion set at input and
output sides
Insuffcient or no gear lubricant in
gearbox and/or clutch housing
Inspect pinion / output shaft and
spur gears for damage, replace if
necessary, then fill gearbox and
clutch housing with STIHL gear
lubricant
Gearbox too hot Excessive friction due to damaged
or worn ball bearings
Check ball bearings in clutch
housing / gearbox housing and
replace if necessary.
Insuffcient or no gear lubricant in
gearbox and/or clutch housing
Inspect pinion / output shaft and
spur gears for damage, replace if
necessary, then fill gearbox and
clutch housing with STIHL gear
lubricant
Gearbox runs erratically and stops
under load
Clutch worn Inspect clutch and clutch drum,
replace if necessary
Gearbox jammed Damaged or worn ball bearings
seized
Check ball bearings in clutch
housing / gearbox housing and
replace if necessary.
Teeth damaged or broken – pieces
are causing blockage
Check pinion / output shaft and
spur gears for damage and replace
if necessary – always replace both
meshing components.
