– As close as possible to the ground.

Sapwood cuts
Sapwood cuts help prevent long-fibered
wood splintering when the tree falls.
Apply the cuts at both sides of the trunk
at the same height as the bottom of the
felling notch, to a depth of about

the trunk diameter. On large diameter
trees, cut to no more than the width of
the guide bar.
Do not use sapwood cuts on diseased
trees.
Felling cut
Shout a warning before starting the
felling cut.
– Make the felling cut (D) slightly
higher than bottom of felling notch.
– Cut horizontally.
– Leave approx.
