B. Removing Debris from Engine
Beforeeach use, remove grass clippings,dirtand debris
from the followingareas:
• Cooling fins
• Air intake screen
• Levers
• Linkage
Removing debris will insure adequate cooling, correct engine
speed and reduce the risk of fire. See Figure 14.
C. Spark Plug
Check spark plugyearly or every 100 operating hours.
1. Clean area around spark plug.
2. Remove and inspect spark plug.
3. Replace spark plug if porcelain is cracked or if elec-
trodes are:
• Pitted
• Burned
• Fouled with deposits
4. Check electrode gap with wire feeler gauge and set
gap to .030 (0.76mm) if necessary. See Figure 15.
5. Install spark plug and tighten securely.
NOTE
A resistorsparkplug must be used for replacement(Tecumseh
part no. 35395, or Champion part no. RJ- 19LM).
D. Cleaning/Replacing Air Cleaner
Yourengine has an air cleaner whichhelpsprevent prema-
ture engine wear and failure. NEVER run engine without
complete air cleaner installed on engine. Your air cleaner
periodically needs to be cleaned or replaced. To do this, you
first need to determine the type of air cleaner on your
engine. Your engine will be equipped with one of the follow-
ing air cleaners; Type A, B, C, D or E. Follow instructions
for the air cleaner type that resembles your model.
NOTE
Contact your Authorized Tecumseh Servicing Dealer for
Tecumseh Air Cleaner Part Numbers.
I. Servicing Foam Filters
Clean and re-oilfoam filters every 3 months or every 25
operating hours. Clean and re-oildaily if used inextremely
dusty conditions. After removing the filter, follow these
cleaning instructionsbelow:
1. Wash in warm water and detergent solutionthen
press (DO NOT twist) untilall dirt is removed.
2. Rinse thoroughly until water is clear.

Wrap in a clean cloth and press (DO NOT twist) until
completely dry.
Saturate with engine oiland press (DO NOT twist) to
distribute oil.
5. Remove excess oil.
II. Servicing Paper Filters
Paper filterscannot be cleaned and must be replaced once
a year or every 100 operatinghours;more often if used in
extremely dustyconditions. Replacement filters are
available at a Authorized Tecumseh ServicingDealer. Follow
the instructionsnextto the drawing of your air cleaner to
remove and replace it.
NOTE
DO NOTput oil onor clean a paper filter.
