Overview

The Temposonics E-Series IO-Link Magnetostrictive Linear Position Sensor is designed for precise measurement tasks in industrial, commercial, and laboratory applications. These sensors are considered system accessories and require connection to suitable evaluation electronics such as a PLC, IPC, or other electronic control units.

Function Description:

The sensor operates on the magnetostrictive principle, which involves the interaction of a current pulse and a position magnet. A current pulse generates a magnetic field, which interacts with the position magnet's field, creating a torsional strain pulse. This pulse travels along the waveguide and is detected by a torsional strain pulse converter, which then converts the time-of-flight into a position value. The sensor's electronics provide a rugged construction, containing the complete electronic interface with active signal conditioning. The external position magnet is a permanent magnet that is mounted on the mobile machine part and travels along the sensor rod or profile, triggering the measurement through the sensor rod wall. The sensor can be directly connected to a control system, and its electronics generate a strictly proportional positional signal output between the start and end positions.

Usage Features:

  • Installation: Sensors can be installed in any position. The sensor is firmly installed, and the position magnet is fastened to the mobile machine part, traveling along the measuring rod without touching it. Mounting clamps are provided for secure installation on a flat machine surface. It is crucial to mount the sensor in an axially parallel position to prevent damage to the carriage, magnet, and sensor rod.
  • IO-Link Integration: The sensor supports IO-Link for bi-directional point-to-point communication, enabling consistent communication between sensors and controllers. IODD files (short for stroke lengths ≤ 1000 mm, long for stroke lengths > 1000 mm) are available for integration into automation software like "Automation Studio."
  • Configurable Parameters:
    • Resolution: Adjustable to 5, 10, 20, 50, or 100 µm.
    • Filter: A "moving average filter" can be configured (Filter off, grade 2, 4, or 8) to smooth position values.
    • Measuring Direction: Configurable as "Forward" (from sensor electronics housing to rod end) or "Backwards" (from rod end to sensor electronics housing).
    • Offset: An offset can be added to the current position value, and a "teach offset" function allows setting the current position as the offset.
    • Switch Points: The digital output (DI/DQ) can be configured as one or two switch points with inverted or non-inverted logic. A "teach switch point" function allows defining switch positions via the IO-Link master's graphical user interface.
    • Measurement Range: The start and end positions of the measurement range can be customized, with a "teach start/end position" function available.
  • Data Storage Mechanism: Parameters can be saved on a connected IO-Link master, allowing transfer to a new device when exchanging sensors.
  • Device Access Lock: A parameter allows activating or deactivating the data storage mechanism, enabling or locking read/write access to parameters.

Maintenance Features:

  • Maintenance-Free: The sensor is designed to be maintenance-free.
  • Repair: Repairs should only be performed by Temposonics or explicitly authorized repair facilities.
  • Spare Parts: No spare parts are available for this sensor.
  • Transport and Storage: The sensor's transport and storage conditions align with its operating conditions.
  • Dismantling: The product contains electronic components and must be disposed of according to local regulations.
  • Safety Declaration: For sensor returns for checking or repair, a safety declaration is required to ensure items are free of harmful substances.
