ANTI-ICESYSTEM-MAINTENANCEPRACTICES
1.Introduction
A.Thissectionprovidesinstallation,service,andpartsinformationforpropelleranti-icesystemsand
equipmentmanufacturedbyMcCauleyPropellerSystems.
NOTE:AlldatainthismanualisapplicableonlytopartsmanufacturedbyMcCauley.McCauley
doesnotproduceallofthecomponentsthatarerequiredforaworkingpropelleruid
anti-icesystem.Theuidholdingtank,pump(s),uidsupplylinetothepropellerslinger
ring,andcontrolcomponentsarenotsuppliedbyMcCauley.Informationconcerning
maintenanceofcomponentsnotsuppliedbyMcCauleyandconcerningoperationofthe
anti-icesystemshouldbeobtainedfromtheairplaneTypeCerticate(TC)orpropeller
SupplementalTypeCerticate(STC)holder/ownerasapplicable.Section61-13-45,
Anti-iceSystemPartsLists,providesinformationwherecomponentpartnumbers
manufacturedbyMcCauleycanbefound.
2.ApplicableRegulations
A.Allmaintenanceandinspectionproceduresshouldbeperformedbyqualiedpersonnel.Allwork
onanti-icesystemsmustcomplywithFAAAdvisoryCircular43,Title14oftheCodeofFederal
Regulations(CFR)Part23,andsupersedingFAAreleases.Wherehardwareorcomponentshave
provisionsforsafetywiring,makesurethatsafetywireisinstalledinaccordancewithNASM33540,
GeneralPracticesForSafetyWiring,SafetyCabling,CotterPinning.
3.InstallationDescription
A.Thepropelleranti-icesystemcomponentsprovidedbyMcCauleycanconsistofthefollowing:
Anti-IceFeedShoes
SlingerRing
Anti-IceSupplyLine
PropellerBladeSupplyTubesandHoses
4.PrinciplesOfOperation
A.Theanti-icesystemisintendedtopreventiceformationonthepropellerbladesoftheairplanewhile
operatinginicingconditions.ThePropellerAnti-Icesystemincludespropellerbladefeedshoes,
slingerring,andsupplytubesandhoses.Thepilotcontrolsthesystembyelectricalswitchesthat
controlthemeteringpumpsthatsupplyuidtothepropellerslingerring.
5.DescriptionofAnti-IceSystemComponents
A.Anti-IceFeedShoes.
(1)Theanti-icefeedshoesaremadeofrubberandareattachedtotheinboardportionofeach
propellerblade.Theshoeshavegroovesmoldedintothemtoprovideameansofchannelingor
directingtheanti-iceuidoverthesurfaceofthepropellerbladewhenthepropelleristurning.
Withouttheanti-iceshoes,theanti-iceuidwouldnotbeevenlydistributedoverthepropeller
blades.Onesideoftheshoehasamattenishwithgrooveswhiletheothersidehasafabric
impressionnishtoensureagoodbondbetweentheshoeandthepropellerblade.
B.SlingerRing.
(1)Theslingerringisattachedtotheaftsideofthepropellerandcatchestheanti-iceuidfromthe
stationarypropellernozzlemountedontheengineand,usingcentrifugalforce,directstheuid
tothetubesthatsupplyuidtothepropellerbladesprayheadassembly.Onsomeinstallations,
theslingerringisanintegralpartofthepropelleraftspinnerbulkhead.
C.Anti-IceSupplyTubesandHoses.
(1)Thesupplylinesandhosesthattakeuidfromtheslingerringanddirectsittothepropellerblade
feedshoes.Onsomepropellerinstallations,thetubedirectinguidtothepropellerbladefeed
shoewillbereferredtoasasprayheadassembly.Onmostinstallations,thetubedirectinguid
tothepropellerbladefeedshoewillbeanintegralpartofthepropellerspinnerlletassembly.
