6. P our oil into the fill opening until the oil lev el
is up to the Full mark on the dipstic k. Add the
oil slo wly and c hec k the lev el often during this
process . Do not o v erfill .
7. Install the oil fill cap and dipstic k fir mly in
place .
8. Connect the spark plug wires and batter y
cables .
Changing the Oil Filter
R e place the oil filter ev er y 100 operating hours or
yearly , whic hev er occurs first.
1. Drain the oil from the engine; refer to
Changing the Oil.
2. R emo v e the existing oil filter ( Figure 35 ).
3. Apply a light coat of clean oil to the new filter
g ask et.
4. Screw the new filter on until the g ask et
contacts the mounting plate , then tighten the
filter an additional 1/2 to 3/4 tur n fur ther . Do
not o v er tighten .
5. Fill the crankcase with the proper type of new
oil.
6. Star t and r un the engine to c hec k for leaks .
7. Stop the engine and c hec k the oil lev el. Add
oil if necessar y .
Servicing the Spark Plugs
R e place the spark plugs after ev er y 800 operating
hours or yearly , whic hev er occurs first, to ensure
proper engine perfor mance and reduce the exhaust
emission lev el.
T ype: Champion R C 14Y C (or equi v alent)
Air Gap: 0.030 inc h (0.762 mm)
Note: T he spark plugs usually lasts a long
time; ho w ev er , the plugs should be remo v ed and
c hec k ed whenev er the engine malfunctions .
1. Clean the area around the spark plugs so that
foreign matter cannot fall into the cylinder
when the spark plug is remo v ed.
2. Pull the spark plug wires off of the spark plugs
and remo v e the plugs from the cylinder head.
3. Chec k the condition of the side electrode ,
center electrode , and center electrode insulator
to ensure that there is no damag e ( Figure 36 ).

Important: A crack ed, f ouled, dir ty ,
or malfunctioning spar k plug must be
r eplaced. Do not sandblast, scrape, or
clean the electr odes by using a wir e br ush
because g rit may ev entuall y r elease fr om
the plug and f all into the cylinder . T he
r esult is usuall y a dama ged engine.
4. Set the air g ap betw een the center and side
electrodes at 0.030 inc h (0.762 mm) ( Figure 36 ).
5. Install the cor rectly g apped spark plug and
tighten the plug to 18-22 ft-lb (24-30 N ⋅ m). If
a tor que wrenc h is not used, tighten the plug
fir mly .
6. Install the spark plug wires .
Fuel System
Maintenance
Inspecting Fuel Lines and
Connections
Chec k the fuel lines and connections ev er y 400
operating hours or yearly , whic hev er occurs first.
Inspect them for deterioration, damag e , or loose
connections .
Replacing the Fuel Filter
R e place the fuel filter ev er y 800 operating hours
or yearly , whic hev er occurs first.
1. Raise the bo x and suppor t it with the prop rod.
2. Place a clean container under the fuel filter .
