Overview

The device described in this manual is a Toro ProLine 20 HP Hydro Mid-Size Traction Unit, model number 30192-200000001 & Up. This machine is designed for cutting and recycling grass or, when equipped with a grass bagger, for catching cut grass. It meets or exceeds CPSC blade safety requirements for rotary mowers and the B71.4 1999 specifications of the American National Standards Institute.

Function Description:

The Toro ProLine traction unit is a pedestrian-controlled piece of equipment primarily used for mowing. It features a hydrostatic drive system controlled by an Enhanced T-Bar control system, which regulates ground speed, forward, reverse, and steering direction. The machine is powered by a 20 HP engine. An electric clutch engages and disengages the mower blades, controlled by a blade control bail and a rocker switch (PTO). A safety interlock system is integrated to prevent starting unless the control bar is in neutral and to stop blade rotation when the blade control is released. The machine also includes an hour meter to track operating hours.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Engine: 20 HP
  • Drive System: Hydrostatic, controlled by Enhanced T-Bar
  • Fuel Type: Unleaded Regular Gasoline (85 pump octane minimum). Leaded regular gasoline may be used if unleaded is unavailable. Methanol, gasoline containing methanol, or gasohol with more than 10% ethanol should not be used.
  • Fuel Tank Capacity: Not explicitly stated, but filling instructions advise leaving 1/4" to 1/2" (6-13 mm) below the filler neck for expansion.
  • Engine Oil Type: Detergent oil (API service SF, SG or SH)
  • Engine Oil Crankcase Capacity (w/filter): 2.1 qt. (2 L)
  • Engine Oil Viscosity: 10W-30, 10W-40 (for temperatures above 0°C/32°F); 5W-20, 5W-30 (for temperatures below 0°C/32°F).
  • Spark Plug Type: Champion RC12YC (or equivalent)
  • Spark Plug Air Gap: 0.040 in. (1.02 mm)
  • Spark Plug Torque: 20 ft-lb (27 N·m)
  • Hydraulic Fluid Type: Mobilube 424 (ISO 68) or equivalent anti-wear hydraulic fluid. Only specified hydraulic oils should be used.
  • Hydraulic Tank Capacity: 1-3/4 qt. (1.6 L)
  • Battery: 12 V, 280 Cold Cranking Amps. Electrolyte specific gravity: 1.260.
  • Wheel Lug Nut Torque: 55 ft. lbs. (75 N·m)
  • Upper Handle Flange Bolt Torque: 25 ft. lbs. (34 N·m)
  • Electric Clutch Clearance: 0.012–0.018 in. (0.30–0.45 mm)
  • Engine Mounting Bolt Torque (Clutch Retainer): 170–220 in. lb. (19–24 N·m)
  • Tire Pressure: 15 psi (.103 kPa) for rear and castor tires.
  • Fuses: F1 Main-7.5 amp, blade-type; F2 Starter-30 amp, blade-type.
  • By-pass Valve Factory Setting: 1/2 turn out. Initial settings for different mower sizes: 62" (1/6 turn out), 52" (1/2 turn out), 44" (1 turn out), 36" (1 turn out). Maximum closing torque for by-pass valve: 50 inch pounds.

Usage Features:

  • Controls: The machine features a throttle control (FAST/SLOW), choke control (CHOKE/RUN), blade control bail, blade control switch (PTO), upper control bar (for forward/backward traction and steering), reference handle (to maintain ground speed), and an ignition switch (START/RUN/OFF). A fuel shut-off valve is located under the fuel tank.
  • Starting: Requires spark plug wire(s) installed, fuel valve open, choke set (for cold engine), throttle to FAST, and turning the ignition key to START.
  • Stopping: Move throttle to FAST (allow engine to cool if hot), turn ignition key to OFF, and remove the key. For unattended machine, close fuel shut-off valve and disconnect spark plug wire(s).
  • Driving: Push the upper control bar forward for forward motion, pull backward for reverse. Apply equal pressure for straight movement, release pressure on one side to turn. Release the control bar to stop.
  • Ground Speed: Adjustable via the reference bar, with approximate speeds of 6 mph (full forward) and 3 mph (middle position).
  • Safety Interlock System: Prevents engine start if control bar is not in neutral and prevents blade rotation if blade control is released.
  • By-pass Valve: Adjustable to optimize operation for different deck sizes and terrain, affecting machine responsiveness and ability to drive uphill.

Maintenance Features:

  • Service Interval Chart: Provides a detailed schedule for various maintenance tasks, including initial checks, and intervals at 8, 25, 50, 100, 200 hours, and storage service. More frequent service is recommended in dusty/dirty conditions.
  • Engine Oil: Check level before each use, change after first 8 hours, then every 100 hours.
  • Oil Filter: Change every 200 hours or every other oil change.
  • Air Cleaner: Foam element cleaned and re-oiled every 25 hours; paper element replaced every 100 hours. More frequent service in dusty/sandy conditions.
  • Spark Plug(s): Check every 200 hours for wear, gap, and cleanliness. Replace if necessary.
  • Cooling Systems: Check and clean hydraulic and engine cooling systems before each use. Clean oil cooler, engine cylinder, and cylinder head cooling fins every 100 hours.
  • Tire Pressure: Check monthly or every 50 operating hours.
  • Hydraulic Fluid: Check level before first start and every 8 operating hours.
  • Hydraulic Filter: Change after first 8 hours, then every 200 hours.
  • Hydraulic Lines: Check every 100 hours for leaks, loose fittings, kinks, and wear.
  • Battery: Check electrolyte level every 8 hours. Keep clean and fully charged. Add distilled water if low.
  • Traction Belt: Check for wear after every 50 hours.
  • Electric Clutch: Check adjustment every 100 hours.
  • Neutral Adjustment: Required if wheels turn when the control bar is in neutral.
  • Fuel System: Use fuel stabilizer/conditioner. Drain fuel tank for storage over 30 days.
  • Cleaning and Storage: Clean machine thoroughly, especially engine cooling areas. Store in a clean, dry garage, remove ignition key, and cover.
