Caution
If you leave the key in the ignition switch, someone could accidently start the engine and
seriously injure you or other bystanders.
Remove the key from the ignition and disconnect the wire from the spark plug before you do any
maintenance. Set the wire aside so that it does not accidentally contact the spark plug.
The bed must be raised to perform some routine
maintenance.
A raised bed can fall and injure persons that are
underneath it.
• Always use the prop rod to hold the bed up
before working under it.
• Remove any load material from the bed before
working under it.
Warning
Maintaining the Vehicle under
Special Operating Conditions
If the vehicle is subjected to any of the conditions listed
below, maintenance should be performed twice as
frequently.
• Desert operation
• Cold climate operation (below 50° F [10° C])
• Trailer towing
• Driving time typically less than 5 minutes
• Frequent operation in dusty conditions
• Construction work
• After extended operation in mud, sand, water, or similar
dirty conditions, have your brakes inspected and
cleaned as soon as possible. This will prevent any
abrasive material from causing excessive wear.
• Under frequent heavy duty operating conditions,
lubricate all grease fittings and inspect air cleaner daily
to prevent excessive wear.
• Frequent periods with the engine idling in neutral (key
start models only)
Jacking the Vehicle
Whenever the engine is run for routine maintenance and/or
engine diagnostics, the rear wheels of the vehicle should be
1 inch (25 mm) off the ground with the rear axle supported
on jack stands.
Danger
The vehicle may be unstable when using a jack. It
could slip off the jack, injuring anyone beneath it.
• Do not start the engine while the vehicle is on a
jack.
• Always remove the key from the ignition before
getting off of the vehicle.
• Block the tires when the vehicle is on a jack.
The jacking point at the front of the vehicle is on the front
of the frame behind the towing tongue (Fig. 23) The
jacking point at the rear of the vehicle is under the axle
tubes (Fig. 24).
