Overview

The TRACKER Plus is a sophisticated vehicle location unit (VLU) designed to enhance vehicle security through advanced tracking capabilities. This device, identified by part number GBNGA-VU006, integrates seamlessly into the vehicle's electrical system, providing robust protection against theft and aiding in vehicle recovery. Its primary function is to securely track the vehicle using Very High Frequency (VHF) technology, allowing for precise location even in challenging environments where GPS signals might be obstructed.

Function Description

The core function of the TRACKER Plus is to provide a reliable and covert tracking solution for vehicles. Upon installation, the VLU connects to the vehicle's permanent 12V supply and ignition, allowing it to continuously monitor the vehicle's status. In the event of theft, the unit transmits a VHF signal, which can be picked up by TRACKER's network, enabling rapid location and recovery of the stolen vehicle. Unlike GPS-only systems, VHF technology offers superior performance in areas like underground car parks, containers, or dense urban environments where line-of-sight to satellites is often blocked.

The system is designed for discreet operation, with the VLU and its antenna intended to be hidden within the vehicle's existing structures and wiring looms. This covert installation makes it difficult for thieves to detect and disable the device, significantly increasing the chances of successful recovery. The unit also incorporates an internal battery, ensuring continued operation even if the vehicle's main power supply is disconnected.

A key aspect of its functionality is the integration with the TRACKER Dealer Portal. This online platform is used for registering the unit's serial number and asset details, which is a crucial step for activating the tracking service. The portal also facilitates commissioning the unit, ensuring it communicates correctly with the TRACKER network. The VLU includes a diagnostic LED that provides visual feedback on its operational status, aiding installers in verifying correct functionality during and after installation.

The TRACKER Plus is designed to be a "fit and forget" solution once properly installed and commissioned. It operates autonomously, constantly ready to transmit its location when activated by the TRACKER network in a theft scenario. The system's reliance on VHF technology means it does not depend on cellular networks, which can be jammed or out of range, providing a more resilient tracking capability.

Usage Features

The TRACKER Plus is primarily a security and recovery device, meaning its "usage" is largely passive from the owner's perspective, but highly active in the background. For the installer, the device offers several features that streamline the installation process and ensure proper functionality.

  • Covert Installation: The design emphasizes discreet placement. The VLU is compact and can be mounted in hidden locations within the vehicle, such as behind the dash or under the parcel shelf. The VHF antenna is a thin wire that is routed along existing wiring harnesses and covered with looming tape to blend in, making it virtually undetectable to unauthorized individuals. This covert nature is a critical usage feature for effective theft recovery.
  • Robust Power Management: The unit connects to both permanent 12V and ignition live feeds, ensuring it is always powered when the vehicle is in use and can detect ignition status. The inclusion of a 5A fuse for the 12V supply and a 1A fuse for the ignition supply provides essential electrical protection. The internal battery acts as a backup, maintaining tracking capabilities even if the vehicle's main battery is disconnected or depleted, which is a common tactic used by thieves.
  • Diagnostic Feedback: A diagnostic LED on the VLU provides immediate visual confirmation of its operational status. This is invaluable during installation and troubleshooting, allowing installers to verify that the unit is powered, communicating with the network, and functioning correctly. The LED sequence indicates different states, such as initial connection, successful communication, and "Out Of TEST Mode" messages, which are crucial for confirming proper setup.
  • Network Integration: Once installed and powered, the VLU automatically attempts to communicate with the TRACKER network. After a period of continuous power (typically 2 hours or more), the diagnostic LED will extinguish, and the VLU will send an "Out Of TEST Mode message" to the network. The network then responds by initiating an automatic Quality Audit (QA) of the unit, confirming its readiness for service. This automated commissioning process simplifies the final setup steps.
  • Lexus Approved Integration: The TRACKER Plus is specifically approved for Lexus vehicles, ensuring compatibility with the vehicle's electrical systems and adherence to Lexus's installation standards. This includes using Lexus-approved connection methods as described in the Technical Information Service (TIS) and checking all connection points with the Electrical Wiring Diagrams (EWD) for the latest wiring information. This ensures that the installation does not interfere with other vehicle systems and maintains the vehicle's warranty.
  • Secure Registration Process: The registration of the unit's serial number and asset details on the TRACKER Dealer Portal (as per OP85/86) is a mandatory step. This secure process links the physical unit to the vehicle and its owner, enabling the TRACKER network to activate tracking services when needed. A barcode sticker from the VLU unit is attached to the vehicle job card for record-keeping, and the welcome pack and remaining stickers are provided to the customer.

Maintenance Features

The TRACKER Plus is designed for minimal maintenance once installed, operating largely autonomously. However, there are a few considerations related to its long-term operation and troubleshooting.

  • Self-Monitoring and QA: The system includes a self-monitoring capability. After initial power-up and a period of stable operation, the VLU communicates with the TRACKER network, which performs an automatic Quality Audit (QA). This audit verifies the unit's functionality and connectivity, ensuring it is ready to perform its tracking duties. This proactive check helps identify any issues early on without requiring manual intervention.
  • Reset Functionality: In cases where troubleshooting is required, the VLU can be reset. This involves removing the end cap and disconnecting the internal battery for more than 30 seconds while the main 12V supply remains connected. Reconnecting the internal battery will cause the diagnostic LED to display its status again for a period of 2 hours, allowing for re-evaluation of its operational state. This simple reset procedure can resolve minor communication or operational glitches.
  • Robust Wiring and Connections: The installation guidelines emphasize the importance of secure and protected wiring. All connections to the vehicle must be made using Lexus-approved methods, and all wiring (including the antenna) must be free from chafing or sharp edges. Disguising wiring with matching loom tape and cable ties not only enhances covertness but also protects the wiring from damage, contributing to the long-term reliability of the installation.
  • Anti-Corrosion Treatment: Any holes drilled into the vehicle during installation must be treated with anti-corrosion paint. This crucial step prevents rust and degradation of the vehicle's bodywork, ensuring the integrity of the installation and the vehicle itself over time.
  • Internal Battery for Longevity: The internal battery provides backup power, extending the operational life of the unit even if the vehicle's main battery is compromised. While not user-replaceable in a routine sense, its presence ensures continuous functionality, reducing the need for immediate service in power-loss situations. The battery's design is intended for long-term reliability, aligning with the "fit and forget" philosophy.
  • Professional Support: TRACKER provides technical support (01895 455777) for installers, ensuring that any complex issues or questions during installation or post-installation can be addressed by experts. This support network is a key "maintenance" feature, as it ensures that the device is always installed and maintained to the highest standards.
  • Documentation and Procedures: The comprehensive installation guide and referenced operational procedures (e.g., OP60, OP66, OP67, OP68, OP85, OP86, TB) serve as essential maintenance tools. They provide detailed instructions for correct installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting, ensuring consistency and quality across all installations. Adherence to these documents minimizes errors and maximizes the device's effectiveness and longevity.
