Do you have a question about the Transtecno SMT Series and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The provided document is an installation and maintenance manual for Transtecno's SM series of AC asynchronous electric motors, available in both three-phase (SMT) and single-phase (SMM) configurations, with an IP66 protection rating. The manual covers essential information for safe and effective use, installation, and maintenance of these motors.

Function Description:

The Transtecno SM series motors are designed for various industrial applications, serving as the modular gearmotor in systems requiring reliable and efficient power transmission. They are asynchronous electric motors, meaning they operate on alternating current and their rotor speed is slightly less than the synchronous speed of the rotating magnetic field. The motors are available in basic versions, or with a brake (BR) or servo fan (SV) for specific operational needs. They are suitable for both right-hand and left-hand rotations, offering flexibility in integration. The motors are built with phase separators (except for the SM50 model) and magnetic sheet metal, making them suitable for use with inverter power supplies.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Motor Type: AC asynchronous electric motors, available in three-phase (SMT) and single-phase (SMM) versions.
  • Voltage: Three-phase motors operate at 230/400V 50Hz and 460V 60Hz. Single-phase motors operate at 230V 50/60Hz.
  • Braking: Available in self-braking versions, with or without a release hand lever.
  • Cooling: Available in TEFC (Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled) version, cooled by a radial fan (IC411 cooling method according to CEI EN 60034-6), or TENV (Totally Enclosed Non-Ventilated) version with completely closed motor housing without fans (IC410 cooling method).
  • Protection Rating: IP66, indicating complete protection against dust ingress and protection against powerful water jets.
  • Thermal Protection: Equipped with a PTO (bimetallic thermal protector) as standard. This normally closed contact opens when the thermal threshold of 150°C is exceeded. The PTO is available for motor sizes 56, 63, 71, 80, and 90.
  • Environmental Conditions: Designed to operate in environments with temperatures between -15°C and +40°C (EN60034) at a maximum altitude of 1000m above sea level. For operation below 0°C or in ATEX environments, Transtecno Technical Service must be contacted.
  • Insulation Resistance: Should not be less than 10MΩ at 20°C, and never lower than 1MΩ, measured by applying a continuous voltage of at least 500V between phases and earth.
  • Materials: Composed of recyclable materials including copper (approx. 30%), iron (approx. 50%), and aluminum (approx. 15%).
  • Cable Glands:
    • SMT series (50/56/63): M16x1.5
    • SMT series (71/80/90): M20x1.5
    • SMM series (50/56/63): 2 x M16x1.5
    • SMM series (71/80): 1 x M20x1.5 and 1 x M16x1.5

Usage Features:

  • Installation: Motors must be securely fastened to the machine mechanics. Lifting should be done using straps or belts, avoiding the fan cover, input shaft, or terminal box cover. Proper length screws must be used for flange B14 threaded holes to ensure sufficient grip without damaging the seat.
  • Electrical Connection: All electrical connectors inside the control box must be correctly tightened. Power supply cables must be adequately sized based on the absorption data provided in the manual (Chapter 14) or by contacting Transtecno Technical Service. Wiring diagrams are located on the terminal board cover.
  • Grounding: It is mandatory to connect the motor's metal parts to the machine's earth network using an adequately sized cable and a grounding screw, identified by a symbol in accordance with EN60204-1. The motor must not be powered before effective grounding is established.
  • Overheating Protection: The PTO bimetallic thermal protector must be effectively used to prevent excessive motor overheating. If the motor does not include a PTO, the installer is responsible for providing overtemperature protection. Series connection of the PTO to the motor control circuit is not recommended for safety reasons.
  • Inverter Use: SM series motors are suitable for use with inverter power supplies. However, if the motor operates below 30 Hz for extended periods, forced ventilation is recommended. The final assembler must ensure compliance with EN 61800-3 and EN 61800-5 standards.
  • Safety Warnings: The manual highlights three main dangers:
    • Electric Danger: Risk of electric shock from live parts, even when the motor is stopped. Disconnection from the mains and proper grounding are crucial.
    • General Danger: Risk of damage due to improper use or insufficient maintenance.
    • Thermal Danger: Risk of burns from surfaces exceeding 50°C.
  • Operational Environment: Ensure adequate air circulation for cooling, especially on the fan side. Avoid obstructions in air passages, nearby heat sources, or any conditions that compromise heat exchange.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Inspections: Frequent inspections are recommended, at least once a year or every 5000 operating hours.
  • Cleaning: Keep the motor clean, including the fan and fan cover, free from dirt and dust to ensure proper ventilation.
  • Mechanical Check: Verify the general mechanical condition of the motor. Replace accessible worn or damaged parts.
  • Oil Seal: If rubbing noises occur, replace the oil seal and keep it greased.
  • Sealing Rings: For IP66 operating conditions, sealing rings should be checked more frequently. Contact Transtecno Technical Service if in doubt about the integrity of the sealing rings.
  • Terminal Box: Check the gasket seal and lever connectors inside the terminal board box.
  • Insulation Resistance Check: Before commissioning, after extended storage, or if moisture is suspected in the windings, check the insulation resistance.
  • Storage: Store motors in a dry, clean, dust-free environment at temperatures between -25°C and +55°C. Avoid temperatures below zero to prevent condensation. Motors should not be subjected to external vibrations during storage to prevent bearing damage. For storage exceeding one year, check the sealing ring before restarting.
  • Disposal: Motors are classified as EEE (electric & electronic equipment) waste and must be disposed of correctly at the end of their life, in accordance with local regulations. They contain recyclable materials and should be taken to specialized disposal companies. Packaging materials (cellophane, polystyrene, bags, cardboard) should also be disposed of correctly. Transtecno is part of the ECOEM Consortium.
  • Safety During Maintenance: All maintenance operations must be performed by qualified personnel with the motor physically and safely disconnected from the mains, at an acceptable temperature, and with all moving parts stopped. Safety shoes and gloves are mandatory.
