Overview

The TRANSTEK TMB-1491 is an arm-type blood pressure monitor designed for adult indoor use, providing blood pressure and pulse rate measurements, along with result storage. It employs the Oscillometric Measuring method to detect blood pressure, establishing a "zero pressure" equivalent to air pressure before inflation. The device then detects pressure oscillations generated by beat-to-beat pulsatile activity to determine systolic and diastolic pressure, as well as pulse rate. A notable feature is its 3rd technology, which allows for measurement during inflation, an updated technology in the world. The monitor also includes an irregular heartbeat detector, which compares the longest and shortest time intervals of detected pulse waves to the mean time interval. If the difference exceeds 25%, a warning signal appears with the reading.

Function Description

The primary function of the TMB-1491 is to accurately measure systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and pulse rate. Readings taken by this monitor are equivalent to those obtained by a trained observer using the cuff and stethoscope auscultation method. It is intended for non-invasive measurement and monitoring of arterial blood pressure on the arm, with a circumference ranging from 22 cm to 42 cm (about 8"-16½"). The device stores up to 60 records for each user, allowing for tracking of blood pressure trends over time. The LCD display provides clear readings of systolic pressure, diastolic pressure, pulse rate, and various symbols indicating device status.

Usage Features

  • User Selection: The monitor supports two users, allowing individuals to store and track their measurements separately. To select a user, press the "SET" button when the monitor is off to enter the user selection mode, then press "SET" again to toggle between User 1 and User 2.
  • Date, Time, and Unit Setting: Before initial use, it is crucial to set the date, time, and measurement unit (kPa or mmHg) to ensure accurate time stamps for stored records. This is done by holding the "SET" button for 3 seconds when the monitor is off to enter the year setting mode. The "MEM" button is used to adjust values, and the "SET" button confirms and moves to the next setting (month, day, hour, minute, unit).
  • Cuff Application: Proper cuff placement is essential for accurate readings. The cuff should be tied on the upper left arm (or right arm if poor circulation in the left arm is diagnosed), with the tube off-center toward the inner side of the arm, aligned with the little finger or the main artery mark. It should be snug enough to allow one finger to be inserted between the cuff and the arm.
  • Measurement Procedure: To start a measurement, press the "START/STOP" button when the monitor is off. The device will adjust to zero, inflate the cuff, measure, and then display and save the results. It is recommended to rest for 5 minutes before measuring, wait at least 3 minutes between measurements, and measure in a silent room while relaxed, without moving or talking. The cuff should be at the same level as the heart, with the palm facing upwards, feet flat on the ground, and back against the chair.
  • Record Recall: Users can recall stored records by pressing the "MEM" button when the monitor is off. The average of the latest three records will be displayed first, followed by individual records upon subsequent presses of "MEM" or "SET." The date and time of each record are shown alternately.
  • Record Deletion: If an incorrect measurement is taken, all results can be deleted. While in memory recall mode, hold "MEM" and "SET" for 3 seconds until "DEL ALL" flashes. Press "SET" to confirm deletion. To escape without deleting, press "START/STOP."
  • Low Battery Indicator: The monitor displays "Lo+" when batteries are low, or if the display is dim or does not light up, indicating that batteries need to be replaced.
  • Error Messages: The device provides error messages (e.g., E 1, E 3, E10, E11, E20, E21, EExx) to guide users in troubleshooting common issues such as cuff not secure, excess cuff pressure, motion during measurement, or calibration errors.

Maintenance Features

  • Storage: Store the device in a dry place, away from direct sunlight, extreme moisture, heat, lint, and dust. Avoid placing heavy objects on the storage case.
  • Cleaning: Use a soft cloth to clean the entire unit before and after use. Do not use abrasive or volatile cleaners. Avoid touching water directly, and if it gets wet, clean it with a dry cloth. The reusable cuff should not be washed in a machine or dishwasher, nor immersed in water.
  • Battery Management: When replacing batteries, use four AAA-size alkaline batteries. Do not mix new and used batteries or different types of batteries. Remove batteries if the device will not be used for an extended period. Dispose of worn batteries according to local recycling guidelines.
  • Service Life: The typical service life of the cuff is 10,000 times. It is recommended that the device's performance be checked every 2 years and after maintenance/repair, by retesting the cuff pressure indication and air leakage.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides a comprehensive troubleshooting guide for common problems, including no power, low batteries, and various error messages, along with suggested remedies. For persistent issues, users are advised to contact Transtek's customer service.
  • Safety Precautions: Users are reminded to read the manual thoroughly for safety information, including warnings against use on specific patient populations (e.g., pregnant women, patients with certain arrhythmias), avoiding kinking the connection tube, and not applying the cuff over wounds. The device is not intended for continuous monitoring during medical emergencies.
