Overview

The TrickleStar TS1810 is a 7-Outlet AV Advanced PowerStrip+ with a Multi-Sensor, designed to help reduce energy consumption by intelligently managing power to connected audio-visual devices. It features auto-threshold sensing technology to learn the power profile of your TV and automatically switch off unused electronics.

Function Description:

The core function of the TS1810 is to eliminate standby power and monitor activity to power down unused electronics. It achieves this through a combination of IR and motion sensing, allowing it to detect when your TV and associated peripherals are in use or idle. When no activity is detected for a set period, the power strip will automatically cut power to the "switched" outlets, thereby saving energy.

The power strip includes both "always-on" outlets and "switched" outlets. The "always-on" outlets are designed for devices that require continuous power, such as DVRs, digital receivers, set-top boxes, and game consoles with hard disk drives, ensuring that recording features, timers, and program guides are not interrupted. The "switched" outlets, on the other hand, are controlled by the power strip's sensing technology. The primary control outlet, marked "< tv >," is specifically for your television. When the TV is turned off or no IR remote activity or motion is detected, devices plugged into the other switched outlets (e.g., Blu-ray players, amplifiers, game consoles without HDDs, home theater speakers, DVD players, CD players, soundbars) will automatically power down.

A key component of the TS1810 is its multi-sensor, which connects to the power strip via an RJ11 port. This sensor is responsible for detecting IR remote control activity and motion in the viewing area. The sensor's placement is crucial; it should be affixed to the TV near its remote sensor, facing the TV-watching area, to effectively monitor activity.

The TS1810 also offers an optional TAV-Link cable (sold separately). This cable connects to an open HDMI port on your TV and sends high-level Consumer Electronic Control (CEC) commands to compatible HDMI-connected devices. This allows these peripherals to softly switch off or enter an energy-saving mode prior to being powered down by the power strip, ensuring data and settings are safely stored.

Usage Features:

Setting up the TS1810 involves a few straightforward steps. First, you plug devices requiring continuous power into the "always-on" outlets. Then, the TV is plugged into the dedicated "< tv >" control outlet. Other AV peripherals, such as DVD players, speakers, or receivers, are plugged into the remaining "switched" outlets. The multi-sensor is then connected to the power strip and affixed to the TV. Finally, the power strip is plugged into a grounded wall outlet. The ground and surge lights on the power strip will illuminate, confirming proper grounding and active surge protection.

Before first use, the APS+ needs to learn your TV's power profile. This auto-threshold sensing technology allows the power strip to understand the normal power draw of your TV. To do this, you first press any button (except power) on your IR remote; the multi-sensor will blink red, and the switched outlets will gain power (indicated by a green "switched" LED). Next, you turn on your TV, let it reach full brightness, and change channels using your IR remote (the sensor will blink red with each press). Finally, you turn off the TV and wait for the switched outlets to power down (indicated by the green "switched" LED turning off). During this process, the sensor will blink red and blue as the TV turns off. Once complete, the APS+ has learned your TV's power profile and is ready for use.

The TS1810 operates in different modes, primarily TV Mode and Music Mode, and offers various sensing modes: IR + Motion Sensing and IR-Only Sensing.

In TV Mode, pressing any button (except power) on your IR remote will turn on the switched outlets. You then use peripheral remote controls to turn on other electronics as needed. When you're finished watching TV, pressing the power button on the TV remote will switch off the TV, and all switched outlets will automatically turn off within one minute.

Music Mode is activated by pressing any button (except power) on an IR remote. This supplies power to the switched outlets, allowing you to turn on music-related devices. If the TV is not on during Music Mode, all switched outlets will turn off after eight hours. If the TV is on, the APS+ will switch to TV Mode.

The Sensing Modes determine how the countdown timer operates. In IR + Motion Sensing, a countdown (15/30/60 minutes, adjustable) begins. Initially, the multi-sensor looks for IR remote activity. If detected, the countdown resets. If not, it then looks for both IR remote activity and motion. If no activity or motion is detected during the countdown, alerts (red/blue LED flashes and optional buzzer sounds) begin 10 and 3 minutes prior to shutdown, after which the TV and peripherals turn off.

In IR-Only Sensing, a countdown (60/120 minutes, adjustable) starts, and the multi-sensor exclusively looks for IR remote activity. If no IR remote activity is detected during this period, alerts are triggered, and the devices power down.

The countdown timer can be adjusted by pressing and holding the button on the multi-sensor for 10 seconds until the red LED illuminates. Subsequent presses allow you to cycle through different timer settings (30, 60, or 120 minutes for IR + motion sensing; 60 or 120 minutes for IR-sensing only). The LED will flash to confirm the selected setting.

Maintenance Features:

The TS1810 includes a Resettable Circuit Breaker. If the surge, ground, and switched LEDs are not illuminated, or if electronics plugged into the APS+ won't turn on, pressing this circuit breaker will manually activate power.

The power strip also features indicator LEDs for easy status monitoring:

  • Surge LED: When illuminated, it indicates that surge protection is functioning normally. If this LED does not light up, the surge protection has been damaged while protecting your devices, and the product needs replacement.
  • Ground LED: When illuminated, it indicates that the APS+ is correctly grounded. If it's not lit, there's a grounding problem, and an electrician should be contacted to properly ground the socket, as surge protection won't work with an improperly-grounded outlet.
  • Switched LED: When illuminated, it indicates that the switched outlets have power.

For user comfort, the default buzzer that sounds 10 and 3 minutes prior to shutdown can be disabled. This is done by pressing and holding the button on the multi-sensor for 10 seconds until the red LED illuminates, then pressing the button six times. The red LED will flash six times to confirm that the buzzer has been disabled.

In case of troubleshooting, if the TV keeps turning off after the set countdown, it indicates that no IR remote signal or motion is detected. To reset the timer, simply press any button on an IR remote or move in front of the multi-sensor. If the TV is shutting down shortly after being turned on or going into Music Mode, it suggests the APS+ didn't properly learn the TV's power profile. The solution involves a full reset: turning everything off, unplugging the APS+ from the wall, unplugging the sensor and all devices from the APS+, waiting a few minutes, then plugging everything back in and following the "Before First Use" instructions again to reset the power profile.
