Do you have a question about the Ubiquiti UF-OLT-4 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The UF-OLT-4 is a Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) Optical Line Terminal (OLT) designed for high-density fiber deployments. It enables service providers to deliver high-speed internet, voice, and video services over a fiber optic network. The device supports up to 128 clients on each of its four GPON ports, making it suitable for scalable network infrastructure.

Function Description:

The UF-OLT-4 serves as the central point in a GPON network, connecting the service provider's network to the customer premises equipment (CPE) via fiber optic cables. It aggregates traffic from multiple Optical Network Units (ONUs) and provides connectivity to the broader internet. The device features four GPON OLT ports, each capable of supporting up to 128 clients, for a total of 512 clients per OLT. It also includes one 1G/10G SFP+ port for high-speed uplink connections, an RJ45 Ethernet port for out-of-band management (MGMT Port), and an RJ45 serial console port for Command Line Interface (CLI) management. The MGMT port supports 10/100/1000 Ethernet and, for firmware version 4.1 and newer, is set to DHCP Client with a fallback IP address of 192.168.1.20/24. Previous firmware versions default to a static IP of 192.168.1.1. The SFP+ port is hot-swappable and supports both 1G and 10G connections.

Usage Features:

  • GPON Connectivity: The four GPON OLT ports allow for extensive fiber optic network deployments, each supporting up to 128 clients. This enables high-speed data transmission over long distances.
  • High-Speed Uplink: The 1G/10G SFP+ port provides flexible and high-bandwidth uplink options, ensuring the OLT can handle aggregated traffic from numerous ONUs.
  • Management Options:
    • MGMT Port: An RJ45 Ethernet port for out-of-band management, supporting 10/100/1000 Mbps. It can obtain an IP address via DHCP or use a fallback static IP.
    • Console Port: An RJ45 serial console port for CLI management, requiring an RJ45-to-DB9 serial console cable. Configuration settings for the console port include a baud rate of 57600, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, and no flow control.
  • System Requirements: Compatible with Linux, Mac OS X, or Microsoft Windows 7/8/10. Google Chrome is recommended as the web browser for optimal functionality.
  • Power Redundancy: The device supports a redundant or stand-alone DC power source (not included) via its 24VDC input. This acts as a hot spare; if the internal AC/DC power supply fails, the device seamlessly switches to the DC source without interruption. Minimum DC power requirements are 56W, 25 to 16V, and a 2.5 mm DC power inline connector.
  • LED Indicators: Comprehensive LED indicators provide quick visual status updates for the system, PON ports, SFP+ port, and MGMT port, indicating power status, link activity, and boot-up progress.
  • Rack-Mountable Design: The UF-OLT-4 is designed for standard 19" wide rack mounting, requiring a minimum of 1U height. Mounting brackets and screws are included for installation. Rubber feet are also provided for desktop placement.

Maintenance Features:

  • Reset Button: The device includes a reset button for various maintenance operations:
    • Runtime Reset: To reset the device during operation, press and hold the Reset button for approximately 10 seconds until the MGMT LED flashes and then becomes solidly lit. The device will automatically reboot after a few seconds. A straightened paper clip or similar object is needed to press the button.
    • Power-on Reset: To perform a power-on reset, disconnect power, then press and hold the Reset button while reconnecting power. Continue holding until the MGMT LED flashes and then stops flashing after a few seconds.
  • Firmware Updates: The device's management interface allows for firmware updates. It's important to note the IP address behavior changes with firmware versions (DHCP client with fallback IP for 4.1+, static IP for older versions).
  • Troubleshooting: The LED indicators assist in quick troubleshooting by showing the status of various components and connections.
  • Safety Notices: The manual emphasizes critical safety warnings, including:
    • Ventilation: Maintain at least 20 mm clearance around ventilation holes to prevent fire hazards.
    • Environmental Protection: Do not expose the product to rain, moisture, or submerge it in water.
    • Electrical Storms: Avoid using the product during electrical storms due to the risk of electric shock.
    • Laser Safety: CLASS 1 LASER PRODUCT warning – never look directly into the ends of fiber optic cables or SFP modules when converters are powered, as emitted light can cause eye damage.
  • Cleaning: Until ready for use, keep modules and fiber patch cables covered with protective caps to ensure connections remain clean.
  • Qualified Service: There are no operator-serviceable parts inside the equipment; all service should be provided by a qualified service technician.
  • Grounding: The equipment is provided with a detachable power cord with an integral safety ground wire. Do not substitute the power cord or use an adapter plug that defeats the grounding continuity. Protective earthing is provided by the listed AC adapter, and building installation must provide appropriate short-circuit backup protection and protective bonding in accordance with local wiring rules.
