Usage Features

The MD 4U NT is designed for ease of use and safety, with several features to ensure proper operation:

Voltage Selection: The pump is equipped with a voltage changeover switch. For "240" operation, the switch should be set to 180-253V, and for "120" operation, it should be set to 90-126V. It is crucial to select the correct voltage setting to prevent damage to the motor. The voltage selection switch is located at the terminal box.

Gas Ballast: The pump includes a gas ballast feature, which is important for pumping condensable vapours. The gas ballast valve can be opened to allow a small amount of air into the pump, preventing condensation of vapours inside the pump. This is particularly useful when pumping substances that tend to condense.

Inlet and Outlet Connections: The pump has a small flange KF 16 inlet and a silencer outlet. It is important to ensure proper connections to avoid leaks and ensure efficient operation. Flexible elements should be used to shrink when evacuated.

Ambient Conditions: The pump should be operated within specified ambient temperatures (10 to 40 °C) and relative atmospheric moisture (30 to 85% non-condensing). Avoid operating the pump in environments with high levels of dust, dirt, or corrosive gases.

Safety Precautions:

  • DANGER: Indicates immediate danger, which if not avoided, will result in death or severe injuries.
  • WARNING: Indicates potential danger, which if not avoided, could result in death or severe injuries.
  • CAUTION: Indicates potential danger, which if not avoided, could result in slight injuries or damage to equipment.
  • NOTICE: Provides important information or tips for proper use.
  • Electrical Safety: Always ensure the pump is properly earthed. Do not operate the pump if the power cable is damaged. Disconnect the electrical power cord before performing any maintenance or repair.
  • Hazardous Substances: When pumping hazardous substances, ensure adequate ventilation and personal protective equipment. Avoid inhaling pumped media.
  • Overpressure: Avoid overpressure of more than 0.2 bar in the gas inlet.
  • Noise: The pump can generate noise during operation. Ensure appropriate measures are taken if noise levels are a concern.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and optimal performance of the MD 4U NT pump.

Maintenance Schedule:

  • Wear parts: Diaphragms and valves are wear parts and typically need replacement after 10,000 operating hours. Motor capacitors also have a typical durability of 10,000 to 40,000 operating hours.
  • Check pump components: Regularly inspect the pump for any signs of damage, wear, or leaks. This includes checking diaphragms, valves, O-rings, and other wetted parts.

Replacing Diaphragms and Valves:

  • Disassembly: To replace diaphragms and valves, the pump head needs to be disassembled. This involves removing the housing cover, head cover, and diaphragm clamping disc.
  • Tools: Hex key size 5 and diaphragm key w/f 66 are required for disassembly and reassembly.
  • Cleaning: Clean all components thoroughly before reassembly. Use appropriate cleaning agents and ensure no residues remain.
  • Reassembly: Carefully reassemble the pump head, ensuring all O-rings and seals are correctly positioned. Tighten screws to the specified torque (12 Nm for housing cover screws).
  • Functionality Check: After replacing diaphragms and valves, check the pump's ultimate vacuum and ensure it operates without unusual noise or vibration.

Replacing the Device Fuse:

  • Safety: Always disconnect the pump from the mains power supply before replacing the fuse.
  • Procedure: Open the terminal box by unscrewing the four screws. Remove the wire with the blown fuse (fixed with flat pin bushes). Mount the new wire (flat pin bushes) and close the terminal box. The fuse is a slow blow fuse 6.3A.
  • Electrical Safety Check: After replacing the fuse, perform an electrical safety check (protective conductor resistance, insulating resistance, high voltage test) according to IEC 61010 and national regulations.

Cleaning and Inspecting Pump Heads:

  • Positioning: Position the pump on its side, supported appropriately, to facilitate access to the pump head.
  • Disassembly: Remove the eight socket-head screws that secure the housing cover. Use a spiky or sharp-edged tool to carefully lift the diaphragm.
  • Inspection: Check the diaphragm for damage and replace if necessary. Inspect the O-rings and replace if they are worn or damaged.
  • Cleaning: Clean the pump head components, ensuring no foreign particles or residues remain. Avoid using petroleum ether or industrial solvents that could damage the pump.

Notes on Return to the Factory:

  • Check for repair: If the equipment is contaminated with hazardous substances, a decontamination certificate must be sent with the pump.
  • Repair process: For repairs, contact ULVAC customer service. Provide a detailed description of the problem and the product's operating conditions.
  • Warranty: Repairs under warranty require prior authorization.

The ULVAC MD 4U NT is a robust and versatile diaphragm pump, designed for reliable performance with a focus on safety and ease of maintenance. Adhering to the specified usage and maintenance guidelines will ensure its long-term operational efficiency.
