The MX-450 is an RF Remote Controller designed for comprehensive control of complex home theater and multi-room audio/video systems. It offers a unique blend of hardware and software engineering to simplify and automate system operation.
The MX-450 serves as a universal remote control, capable of replacing multiple individual remote controls. Its primary function is to provide a single interface for controlling various audio/video components within a system. This is achieved through custom programming, typically performed by a professional installer, who configures the remote based on the specific components and their interactions within the user's system. The remote utilizes a color LCD screen with six customizable buttons on either side, whose labels change dynamically based on the selected "activity" (e.g., "Watch TV," "Watch DVD"). This dynamic interface ensures that only relevant controls are displayed for the current task.
The MX-450 supports both Infrared (IR) and Radio Frequency (RF) operation. For IR control, it requires line-of-sight to the equipment. However, its optional RF "No Rules" operation, when combined with a Complete Control RF Base Station (such as the MRF-350 or RFX-250 RF Sensor), allows for control without direct line-of-sight. This means the remote can operate components even if they are concealed in other rooms or behind closed doors. The RF Base Station receives radio waves from the MX-450 and then relays commands to components via built-in front blasters or self-adhesive "Flashers" that affix to the IR sensors of the components. The MRF-350 also offers adjustable IR Line Outputs for direct connection to components with rear panel IR Inputs.
The remote is designed for automated operation, meaning that once an "activity" is selected (e.g., "Watch DVD"), the MX-450 can execute a series of commands (macros) to power on the necessary components, select the correct inputs, and configure the system for that activity. The hard buttons on the MX-450 are also reconfigured to optimize control for the selected activity. For instance, the transport buttons (Play, Stop, Skip-, Skip+, FF, REW, Pause) will control a DVR when watching CABLETV, or a DVD player when watching a DVD. The Volume and Mute buttons consistently control the sound, regardless of the displayed screen. The Channel and Previous Channel buttons change channels for activities like "Watch CABLETV" or "Watch SAT TV." The 4-way cursor buttons facilitate navigation on on-screen guides and menus. The number keypad is used for entering channel numbers (for TV) or track numbers (for CD).
