Why does my Viessmann Boiler burner not switch on or only work sometimes?

  The burner might not be switching on, or may only intermittently switch on, due to several reasons. First, check if the gas shut-off valve is open, as there might be no gas. Also, the control unit may be incorrectly programmed or set, so check and correct the settings of the heating program selector switch and timer programming if necessary. Finally, there may be a fault on the control unit, in which case you should inform your heating contractor. As a temporary measure, after consulting with your heating contractor, you can operate the boiler at a constant water temperature using the override/emissions test switch 'S'.

  If the burner fails to start and the red burner fault lamp 'U' is illuminated on the control unit, it could be due to a faulty start-up. Try pressing the burner fault reset button 'EU'. If this doesn't work, contact your heating contractor. It may also be caused by low water level or pressure, activating the water pressure sensor, in which case you should also inform your heating contractor.

  If 'Please change batteries' appears in the display window or the display window fails to illuminate, the batteries are discharged. Here’s how to replace them: 1. Switch off the heating system using the on/off switch on the control unit and disconnect the line voltage. 2. Remove the programming unit. 3. Remove the battery compartment from the rear panel. 4. Change the batteries, using alkaline batteries (AAA). Ensure you insert the batteries as illustrated. 5. Insert the battery compartment back into the rear panel and snap the programming unit back into place. 6. Switch on the heating system using the on/off switch and restore the line voltage. Dispose of the discharged batteries responsibly at local recycling facilities.

  If your rooms are cold even though the burner is operating, it may be because the domestic hot water supply has priority. This only applies if you have a DHW storage tank. Wait until the domestic hot water heating is complete.

  If the boiler is in operation but the heating circuit is cold, and you have a mixing valve controller installed, the mixing valve controller might be defective. Pull out the motor lever and manually adjust mixing valve lever 1. Inform your heating contractor.
