Engine Air Intake Screen
Cylinder Head Cooling Fins
It is essential for performance and longevity of the
air-cooled engine to keep the cylinder head cooling
fins clean and free of obstruction. After every 8
hours of operation, check the performance of the
cooling system by starting the engine, holding a
hand adjacent to the cylinder head, and feeling the
cooling airflow. If there is little or no airflow, clean the
cooling fins as follows:
NOTE: The planned maintenance schedule calls
for cleaning the cylinder head cooling fins yearly or
every 300 hours as a minimum.
Cooling System Airflow
1. Remove the exhaust shroud by removing the
two (2) bolts and one (1) nut as shown in the
Inspect and Clean Cylinder Head Cooling
Fins photo on the following page. Clean the
accessible cooling fins by blowing with com-
pressed air. If the buildup is excessive, refer to
step 2; if the buildup is not excessive, reinstall
the exhaust shroud.
2. Remove the spark plug wire and disconnect the
breather tube on the valve cover. Do not dis-
connect the breather tube from the carburetor
side. Remove the cylinder head shroud by
removing the four (4) bolts, as shown in the
Inspect and Clean Cylinder Head Cooling
Fins photo. Cover the breather tube end and
spark plug boot before cleaning out the cooling
fins. Clean the cooling fins by blowing with com-
pressed air. If the buildup is excessive, use a
piece of wire to probe into the fins for cleaning.
3. Reinstall the shrouds by reversing the preceding
steps. Start the engine and confirm the cooling
airflow.
