Overview

This document describes the Werner Extension Telescopic Ladder, a versatile and adjustable ladder designed for various tasks.

Function Description

The Werner Extension Telescopic Ladder is an adjustable ladder system that can be extended and retracted to different lengths, making it suitable for a range of applications. It features multiple rung/sections that lock into place, allowing users to achieve the desired working height. The ladder is designed for both professional and domestic use, offering flexibility and ease of storage due to its telescopic nature. It can be used in various configurations, including as an extension ladder, and is equipped with safety features to ensure stable and secure operation. The ladder's design allows for compact storage when not in use, making it convenient for transport and storage in limited spaces.

Important Technical Specifications

The Werner Extension Telescopic Ladder is available in several models, each with specific lengths and rung/section counts:

  • 2.6m, 9 Rung/Sections Telescopic Ladder
  • 2.9m, 10 Rung/Sections Telescopic Ladder
  • 3.2m, 11 Rung/Sections Telescopic Ladder
  • 3.8m, 13 Rung/Sections Telescopic Ladder

The ladder is manufactured to EN 131 standards, indicating its suitability for professional use. It is designed to support a maximum total load (including user, tools, materials, etc.) of 150 kg. The ladder incorporates several key components:

  • Wall Bumper: Protects surfaces and provides stability against walls.
  • Lock Indicator: Visual cues (green/red) to confirm whether sections are correctly locked.
  • Rung: Steps for climbing.
  • Support Ring: Part of the locking mechanism.
  • Lock Release: Mechanism to unlock sections for extension or retraction.
  • Stile Tube: The main vertical support beams of the ladder.
  • Bottom Hung: The lowest section of the ladder.
  • Stabiliser Bar (for 3.2m & 3.8m models only): Provides additional lateral stability.

The ladder's design includes a "start to extend at this rung" indicator, guiding users on the correct extension procedure. The locking mechanisms are crucial for safe operation, with visual indicators (green for locked, red for unlocked) ensuring that all sections are properly secured before use.

Usage Features

The Werner Extension Telescopic Ladder offers several features that enhance its usability and safety:

Extension and Retraction:

  • Extension: To extend the ladder, pull upward the two black support rings of the third rung from the bottom until the section locks. Repeat this procedure for each next section until the desired ladder length is reached. All sections must be fully extended and locked, or fully retracted and closed. Partial extension of individual sections is not permitted, except for the top section which can be partially extended to achieve the exact desired length.
  • Retraction: To close the ladder, depress and then release both ladder lock release buttons with your other hand. Using both hands, hold outside of the stile tubes and pull the sections downward. The lowest extended section will close first, followed by subsequent sections. Continue to pull down until the ladder is fully closed.

Safety Guidelines:

  • Pre-use Checks: Always read and follow all operating and safety instructions. Inspect the ladder before every use, visually checking for damage. Ensure all rungs/sections are clean and free from contaminants like mud, oil, or water.
  • Placement: The ladder should be placed on a firm, level, non-slippery surface. Avoid placing it on slippery surfaces (such as ice, shiny surfaces, or significantly contaminated solid surfaces) unless additional effective measures are taken to prevent the ladder slipping.
  • Angle: For leaning ladder use, the correct angle for a leaning ladder (angle of inclination approximately 1:4) with the rungs or treads level should be maintained. The ladder should be erected at the correct position, such as the correct angle for a leaning ladder (angle of inclination approximately 1:4) with the rungs or treads level.
  • Stability: Ensure the stabiliser bar (if fitted) is fully attached and secured. Do not overreach; keep your belt buckle (navel) inside the stiles and both feet on the same step/rung throughout the task.
  • Footwear: Always wear suitable footwear when climbing a ladder.
  • Load: Do not exceed the maximum total load of 150 kg.
  • Working Area: Secure doors (not fire exits) and windows where possible in the work area.
  • Electrical Safety: Do not use the ladder near live electrical environments. The ladder conducts electricity unless specifically designed as non-conductive.
  • Weather Conditions: Do not use the ladder outside in adverse weather conditions, such as strong wind.

Prohibited Actions:

  • Do not stand on the last metre of a telescopic ladder.
  • Do not carry equipment which is heavy or difficult to handle whilst using a ladder.
  • Do not use a damaged ladder.
  • Do not use the ladder if you are not fit enough (certain medical conditions or medication, alcohol or drug abuse could make ladder use unsafe).
  • Do not modify the ladder design.
  • Do not paint the ladder.
  • Do not use the ladder as a bridge.
  • Do not move a ladder while standing on it.
  • Do not ascend or descend unless you are facing the ladder.
  • Do not spend long periods on the ladder without regular breaks.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance is essential to ensure the longevity and safe operation of the Werner Extension Telescopic Ladder.

Regular Inspections:

  • Before Every Use: Visually check the ladder for any damage, loose or corroded components, missing parts, or contamination. Pay close attention to the stiles/legs, rungs/steps, rung hooks, lock indicators, support rings, lock releases, stile tubes, bottom hung, stabiliser bar, and hinges.
  • After Delivery: Inspect the ladder immediately after delivery to ensure it is not damaged and is safe to use.
  • Periodic Inspections: For professional users, a risk assessment shall be carried out respecting the legislation in the country of use. Regular periodic inspection is required.

Cleaning:

  • General Cleaning: Always clean the ladder with a clean, dry cloth. Paint or other foreign material will impede the telescoping action and must be cleaned off immediately.
  • Contamination: Do not use the ladder if contaminated, e.g., with wet paint, mud, oil, water or snow. Prevent damage of the ladder when transporting it, e.g., by fastening and ensure they are suitably placed to prevent damage.

Storage:

  • Secure Storage: Store the ladder fully closed and indoors. Damp conditions could adversely affect the condition and operation of the product.
  • Protection: Store the ladder away from areas where it's condition could deteriorate more rapidly, e.g., dampness, excessive heat, or exposed to the elements.
  • Prevent Damage: Store the ladder in a position which helps it remain straight, e.g., hung by the stiles on proper ladder brackets or laid on a flat clutter-free surface.
  • Security: The ladder should be stored securely where it cannot be easily used for criminal purposes. If the ladder is permanently positioned (e.g., on scaffolding), it is secured against unauthorised climbing (e.g., by children).

  • Repairs and maintenance shall be carried out by a competent person and be in accordance with the producer's instructions.
  • Replacement spare parts are available to order online at wernerco.com.
  • Do not modify the ladder design.
  • If the ladder is damaged, do not attempt to disassemble or repair the product yourself. All repairs and other maintenance shall only be carried out by a competent person in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
