Overview

The document provided is an installation and operation manual for Whirlpool Models WHES30 and WHES33 Demand Controlled Water Softeners.

Function Description

The Whirlpool WHES30 and WHES33 are demand-initiated regeneration (D.I.R.) water softeners designed to reduce water hardness and improve water quality in residential settings. They operate by exchanging hardness ions (calcium and magnesium) with sodium ions, providing softened water for household use. The demand-initiated feature minimizes regenerant brine and water usage by regenerating only when needed, based on water consumption. The systems are also capable of reducing moderate amounts of clear water iron.

Usage Features

Installation:

  • Location: Must be installed where freezing temperatures do not occur and water temperature does not exceed 120°F. Should be placed close to the main water supply inlet, upstream of other plumbing connections (except outside faucets).
  • Drainage: Requires a nearby drain (floor drain, laundry tub, sump, standpipe) for regeneration discharge. An air gap of 1-1/2" between the drain hose and the drain is required to prevent backflow.
  • Plumbing: Compatible with copper, threaded, PEX, CPVC, and other potable water approved pipes. A single bypass valve is included, or a 3-valve bypass system can be purchased separately.
  • Grounding: For metallic plumbing, two grounding clamps and a #4 copper wire must be installed across the softener's location to maintain electrical grounding.
  • Water & Salt Addition: After installation, add approximately three gallons of clean water and then salt (nugget, pellet, or coarse solar salts with less than 1% impurities) to the salt storage tank.
  • Sanitization: Initial sanitization with household bleach (3 oz. into brinewell) is recommended after installation and after service.

Control Panel & Display:

  • Display: Shows current time, status messages, and programming settings.
  • Buttons: UP, DOWN, PROGRAM, RECHARGE, SET SALT LEVEL.
  • Status Light:
    • Slow flashing with salt level indicators: Low salt level, needs setting.
    • Slow flashing with "SCHEDULED CLEAN": Reminder to use Whirlpool® WHE-WSC Water Softener Cleanser (every four months).
    • Rapid flashing with "CURRENT TIME" and clock flashing: Time needs to be set (initial setup or after power outage).
    • Rapid flashing with "Err": Electronic self-diagnostics detected a problem.
    • Steady light: Power applied, no attention required.
  • Water Flow Indicator: Water droplets scroll on the display when water is flowing through the softener, indicating flow rate.

Programming:

  • Set Time of Day: Adjust current time using UP/DOWN buttons.
  • Set Water Hardness Number: Input water hardness (gpg). If water contains clear water iron, add 5 grains for every 1 ppm of iron to the hardness setting. If using potassium chloride (KCl) salt, increase hardness setting by 25%.
  • Set Recharge (Regeneration) Time: Default is 2:00 AM, can be adjusted.
  • Salt Efficiency Feature: Can be set ON or OFF. When ON, the softener operates at salt efficiencies of 4000 grains/pound of salt or higher, potentially leading to more frequent recharges with smaller salt dosages. (Required ON in California).
  • Clean / Clear Water Iron Reduction Feature: Default OFF. When ON, an additional backwash and fast rinse cycle occurs before regeneration to clean the resin bed, beneficial for water supplies with ferrous iron. Can be adjusted from 1 to 15 minutes.
  • Maximum Days Between Regenerations: Automatically controlled for efficiency, but can be manually set from 1 to 15 days to force regeneration (e.g., for clear water iron).
  • 12 or 24 Hour Clock: Select preferred time format.

Recharge Options:

  • Immediate Recharge: Press and hold RECHARGE button for three seconds. Draws sanitizing bleach (if added) and purges air.
  • Scheduled Recharge: Press and release RECHARGE button to schedule an extra recharge at the next preset recharge time.

Maintenance Features

Routine Maintenance:

  • Water Softener Cleanser: Recommended use of Whirlpool® WHE-WSC Water Softener Cleanser every four months. Pour into brinewell and initiate a manual recharge.
  • Adding Salt: Check salt storage level frequently (every two to three weeks until routine is established). Refill when less than 1/4 full. Do not fill above level 4 on the brinewell scale if using potassium chloride.
  • Breaking a Salt Bridge: If a hard crust forms in the brine tank, gently push a broom handle into the bridge to break it. Avoid sharp objects or pounding on the tank.
  • Cleaning the Nozzle & Venturi: This component creates suction for brine draw. If plugged with sand, silt, or dirt, the softener will not work. Access by removing the top cover, placing bypass valve in bypass position, unscrewing the cap, and cleaning all parts (screen support, screen, nozzle & venturi disc, gasket, flow plug) with warm, soapy water. Reassemble carefully, ensuring gasket is centered and numbers face up.

Troubleshooting & Diagnostics:

  • Automatic Electronic Diagnostics: The softener has a self-diagnostic function. If a malfunction occurs, an "Err" code appears on the display.
    • Procedure to clear error code: Unplug power, correct problem, plug back in, wait 8 minutes.
  • Manual Advance Diagnostics: Allows manual advancement through regeneration cycles to check valve and switch operation.
    • Access: Press and hold PROGRAM button for 3 seconds.
    • Information available: Days electrical power applied, number of regenerations initiated, model code.
  • Resetting to Factory Defaults: Press and hold PROGRAM button until display changes twice to show flashing model code, then press UP button to display "SoS", then press PROGRAM button.
  • Manual Advance Regeneration Check: Verifies motor, brine tank fill, brine draw, and flow rates. Involves observing water flow during different regeneration cycles (fill, brine, backwash, fast rinse).
  • Common Problems & Corrections: The manual provides a comprehensive table for various issues like "No soft water," "Water hard sometimes," "Iron in water," "Motor stalled or clicking," and error codes, along with their causes and corrective actions.

Protection from Freezing:

  • Draining Procedure: If installed where freezing may occur, the softener must be drained. This involves closing the main water supply, opening faucets to vent pressure, moving bypass valve to bypass, unplugging power, removing top cover and drain hoses, gently tipping the softener over a floor drain (using a wood block for support) to drain all water, and plugging inlet/outlet with rags.

Warranty:

  • Standard Warranty: One year full warranty on parts and labor for defects in materials and workmanship.
  • Limited Warranties: 10 years for salt storage tank and fiberglass mineral tank (no rust, corrosion, leaks, bursts), 3 years for electronic control board.
  • Warranty Extension: The one-year full warranty can be extended to five years by using Whirlpool® WHE-WSC Water Softener Cleanser as directed (one bottle every four months) and retaining proof of purchase. Other additives will not provide extended coverage.
  • Conditions: Warranties are effective provided the softener is operated within specified water pressure (20-125 psi) and temperature (40-120°F) limits, and not subjected to abuse, misuse, alteration, neglect, freezing, accident, negligence, or unusual forces of nature.
