Overview

This manual describes the installation and adjustment of Yale Parallel Rigid Arm Door Closers (PR), Holder-Stop Door Closers, and Hold-Open Door Closers.

Function Description:

The Yale door closers are designed to control the closing motion of a door, providing various functionalities such as standard closing, holding the door open at a desired angle, or stopping the door at a specific point. They are suitable for different door and frame configurations, including standard frames, narrow frames, and flush partitions. The closers are available with several options, including Delayed Action (DL) for slower closing, Handed Hold-Open (H) components, and Thumbturn actuated Holder-Stop (T) control.

Important Technical Specifications:

The closers are available in various model numbers, including PR3301/PR330X, PR3311/PR331X, PR3501/PR350X, PR3511/PR351X, 3321(T)/332X(T), and 3521(T)/352X(T). The 'X' in the model numbers designates sizes 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6.

Components:

The main components of the door closer include:

  • Closer Body: Contains the internal mechanisms for closing control, including the backcheck valve, delay valve (optional), latch valve, and sweep valve.
  • Power Adjustment Shaft: Used to adjust the closing power.
  • Soffit Plate: A mounting plate for the frame.
  • Closer Arm: Consists of a main arm and a secondary arm. Different arm options are available:
    • PR Arm Assembly: Standard arm with a riveted elbow.
    • CLP Arm Assembly Stop only: Includes a removable stop and a riveted elbow.
    • PR Hold Open Arm Assembly: Features a friction hold-open nut and a riveted elbow.
    • CLP Arm Assembly with Thumbturn: Includes a thumbturn hold-open mechanism, a removable stop, and a riveted elbow.
  • Cover Options:
    • Standard 3501 Full Plastic Cover: With insert cutouts.
    • Standard 3301 Slim Line Plastic Cover: With a pinion cap.
    • Optional 3501M Full Metal Cover: Uses cover clips and screws.
    • Optional Architectural Metal Cover: Requires standoffs and screws.
    • Optional Architectural Plastic Cover: Uses standoffs and screws.

Fastener Preparation:

  • Self-Drilling Screw:
    • Aluminum or Metal: No drill required.
    • Wood: 3/16" (4.30 mm) drill size. (Note: Wood doors MUST be pre-drilled when using Self-Drilling Screws.)
  • 1/4" - 20 machine screw:
    • Metal: Drill #7 (0.201" dia.), Tap 1/4" - 20.
  • Sleeve nuts and bolts:
    • Hollow Metal: 9/32" (7 mm) through; 3/8" (9.5 mm) door face opposite to closer.
    • Aluminum or Wood: 3/8" (9.5 mm) through.
  • Through-bolts and grommet-nuts:
    • All: 9/32" (7 mm); 3/8" (9.5 mm) dia. x 3/8" (9.5 mm) deep on door opposite to closer.

Installation Dimensions:

Detailed charts are provided for installation dimensions (A and B) based on the desired angle of opening (85° to 180°) and hinge type (Butt Hinges or Offset Pivots, Center Pivots).

Usage Features:

  • Power Adjustment: The closing power can be adjusted using a 1/8" hex wrench on the power adjustment shaft. Turning clockwise increases power, while counter-clockwise decreases it. A maximum of 20 turns (360°) is allowed. The closer is shipped set at mid-power.
  • Closing Speed Controls:
    • Sweep Range (Valve 'S'): Controls the speed of the door's main closing arc.
    • Latch Range (Valve 'L'): Controls the speed of the door's final closing phase (latch speed).
    • Delay Range (Valve 'D', optional): Controls the duration of delayed action closing.
    • Caution: Do not back valves out of the closer completely, as this will result in a leak.
  • Backcheck Control: The backcheck valve controls the strength of cushioning in the backcheck range, preventing the door from slamming open. It is not intended to provide a positive stop and should NEVER be completely closed.
  • Hold-Open Features:
    • Thumbturn Hold-Open: Controlled by a knob on the arm. Turning clockwise engages and increases hold-open force; counter-clockwise reduces force and disengages the mechanism.
    • Friction Hold-Open: Holds the door open at the desired angle by tightening a holder-adjustment-nut (wrench supplied or 1" box/open end wrench).

Maintenance Features:

  • The manual emphasizes proper adjustment of the sweep and latch valves for optimal closing action.
  • Regular checks of the power adjustment and valve settings are implied for continued performance.
  • The instructions guide users on how to install and adjust the closer, which are key aspects of maintenance to ensure longevity and proper function.
  • Cover installation instructions are provided for various cover types, which protect the internal mechanisms.

Important Notes:

  • An incorrectly installed or improperly adjusted door closer can cause property damage or personal injury.
  • For special applications, a separate door and frame preparation template is packed with the instructions.
  • Architectural Covers CAN NOT be used for doors swinging over 120° using parallel mount.
  • The closing speed time should be adjusted to between 4 to 7 seconds from 90°, especially for handicapped, elderly, or small children.
