Overview

The Yamaha PF15 is a compact electronic piano designed to produce natural-sounding music using Yamaha's advanced FM sound source technology. It features an 88-key keyboard, which is specially designed to simulate the feel and action of an acoustic piano, offering a wide variety of musical expression.

Function Description:

The PF15 serves as a versatile electronic piano with a built-in amplifier system and dual speakers, producing a rich, full sound that emanates from the entire instrument. It also generates a beautiful stereo chorus effect, creating a vibrant multi-instrument sound. The instrument offers 10 voice selectors: PIANO 1, PIANO 2, PIANO 3, ELECTRIC PIANO 1, ELECTRIC PIANO 2, ELECTRIC PIANO 3, HARPSICHORD 1, HARPSICHORD 2, VIBRAPHONE, and CLAV. These voices can be selected using the TONE SELECT switches, which include an A/B selection switch to access different sounds on upper and lower lines. If all TONE SELECT switches are off, PIANO 1 is automatically selected. To change sounds, it's recommended to wait until the current sound completely disappears before pressing the next TONE SELECT switch to avoid erroneous sound selection. If multiple TONE SELECT switches are pressed simultaneously, the switch on the right is automatically selected.

Usage Features:

  • Power On/Off: The power switch is located on the far right of the control panel. To turn on, push the switch to the ON position; the power indicator will light. To turn off, first slide the VOLUME control all the way down to the left, then turn the power switch off.
  • Volume Control: The VOLUME control adjusts the overall loudness of the PF15's sound. When using an external amplifier, setting the external amplifier volume so that the most comfortable overall volume is obtained when the PF15's VOLUME control is set to about "8" results in the best sound quality.
  • Pitch Control: Turning the PITCH control clockwise raises the instrument's overall pitch, while turning it counterclockwise lowers it. Standard pitch of 440 Hz (A3) is obtained when the control is set slightly to the left of its center position.
  • Stereo Chorus: A dedicated switch turns the vibrant stereo chorus effect ON or OFF. Note that this effect is not produced on sounds coming through the PF15 from external components.
  • Key Transpose: This function allows transposing the keyboard up or down a half-octave in semitone steps, providing further versatility despite the 88-key, seven-octave range. For normal operation, the KEY TRANSPOSE lever should be set in the "C" position.
  • Foot Pedals:
    • SUSTAIN (FOOT SW.): Connects an FC-4 foot pedal (supplied) to this jack. Depressing the pedal provides a sustain effect similar to an acoustic piano, where the sound gradually decreases even after releasing the key. Releasing the pedal immediately cancels the sustained sound. This effect is not obtained if the FC-4 foot pedal is not connected.
    • KEY HOLD (FOOT SW.): Connects another FC-4 foot pedal (supplied) to this jack. When depressed, notes will be sustained even after releasing the keys, similar to an acoustic piano's sustain pedal. The sustain effect will be held as long as the foot pedal is depressed, and the sound is cut off when the pedal is released. This effect is not obtained if the SUSTAIN pedal is being used, as Sustain has priority over KEY HOLD. If you want to obtain this effect for another sound, release the pedal, press the desired key(s), and depress the pedal again. If 16 keys are pressed simultaneously while the KEY HOLD pedal is depressed, all 16 notes will be sustained, requiring the pedal to be released to produce other sounds. However, if only four keys are held, 12 other sounds can be played simultaneously.
  • External Connections:
    • Headphones: Two headphone jacks (stereo phone jack and stereo mini jack) are provided for private listening. When headphones are connected, the PF15's enclosed speakers are automatically shut off.
    • Output I and Output II: These jacks provide the PF15 output signal to an external power amplifier, integrated amp/speaker, or mixer. Speakers without built-in amplifiers cannot be connected directly. For stereo systems, connect to the stereo amp's AUX terminal. The full stereo chorus effect is achieved by feeding OUTPUT I and II to two independent amp/speaker systems or two mixer channels assigned to left and right stereo program busses. Output Level is -10 dBm (line level) with an impedance of 600 ohms.
    • LINE INPUT (External Input Jack): This jack connects external sources like a rhythm machine, cassette deck, or other keyboards to play through the PF15, allowing mixing of sounds. The volume of external components cannot be controlled by the PF15's volume control; adjustments must be made on the external component. Only one LINE INPUT jack is provided; for stereo sources, plug in either the L or R output line, and the monaural signal will be heard simultaneously from both built-in speakers.

Maintenance Features:

  • Location: Avoid direct sunlight, heat sources, vibration, excessive dust, cold, or moisture.
  • Handling: Avoid applying excessive force to knobs and switches.
  • Power Cord: Always grip the power plug directly when unplugging to prevent damage or shorting. Unplug the electronic piano if not used for an extended period.
  • Relocation: Disconnect all cords connecting to other equipment before moving the piano to prevent accidental damage or shorting of interconnection cables.
  • Cleaning: Do not use solvents like benzine or thinner. Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior.
  • Lightning: Unplug the power cord during electrical storms to prevent serious damage.
  • Other Appliances: Use the electronic piano where its digital circuitry will not be influenced by electromagnetic radiation from appliances such as televisions or radios.
  • Manual Storage: After studying, store the manual in a safe place for future reference.
  • Service: The PF15 is supported by Yamaha's worldwide network of factory-trained and qualified dealer service personnel. In case of problems, contact your nearest Yamaha dealer.
  • FCC Certification (USA): The device complies with FCC Regulations for Class B computing devices. If interference occurs with other electronic devices, try relocating the keyboard or the affected device, using different power outlets, or installing A/C line filters. For radio-T.V. interference, relocate the antenna or change the lead-in to co-axial type cable. If issues persist, contact a franchised Yamaha Combo Keyboard dealer or Yamaha International.
