Overview

The Yamaha CD-S700 is a Compact Disc Player designed for high-quality audio playback from various sources, including Audio CDs, Data Discs (MP3/WMA), and USB devices containing MP3/WMA files. It offers a range of features to enhance the listening experience and ensure ease of use.

Function Description:

The primary function of the CD-S700 is to play back audio from compact discs and USB devices. It supports standard Audio CDs, as well as CD-R and CD-RW discs containing MP3 or WMA format files. Additionally, it can play MP3 and WMA files stored on USB mass storage class devices (e.g., flash memories, card readers, portable audio players) formatted with FAT16 or FAT32.

The unit features both Optical Digital Output and Coaxial Digital Output, allowing for flexible connection to a variety of amplifiers and audio systems. For those seeking the purest audio signal, the CD-S700 includes a PURE DIRECT function, which turns off the digital output and the front panel display (except for minimum required indicators) to minimize interference and improve sound quality. When using PURE DIRECT mode, it is recommended to connect the unit via the ANALOG OUT terminals.

Playback modes include standard sequential play, random-sequence play, and repeat play (single track, entire disc, or A-B repeat for Audio CDs). For Audio CDs, users can also program a custom playback order of up to 50 tracks.

Usage Features:

The CD-S700 can be operated via its front panel controls or the supplied remote control.

Front Panel Controls:

  • POWER: Turns the unit ON/OFF. The POWER indicator lights up when the unit is on.
  • USB port: Allows connection of USB devices for MP3/WMA file playback.
  • PURE DIRECT: Toggles PURE DIRECT mode ON/OFF. The PURE DIRECT indicator lights up when the mode is active.
  • Disc tray: For loading discs.
  • Open/Close button: Opens and closes the disc tray.
  • Skip/Search buttons (<< / >>): Skips to the next/previous track or searches backward/forward within a track. Pressing and holding these buttons increases the search speed.
  • Play button (▷): Starts playback.
  • Pause button (||): Pauses playback. Pressing it again resumes playback.
  • Stop button (■): Stops playback.
  • USB indicator: Lights up when in USB/disc mode and blinks when reading a USB device.
  • Front panel display: Shows current status, time displays, track/file numbers, and playback mode icons.
  • Remote control sensor: Receives signals from the remote control.

Remote Control Features:

The remote control provides comprehensive control over the unit, including:

  • Infrared signal transmitter: Sends signals to the unit.
  • CD/USB button: Switches between disc mode and USB mode.
  • DIMMER button: Adjusts the brightness of the front panel display through multiple levels (Max, Level1, Level2, Level3).
  • Numeric buttons (0-9): Directly selects tracks.
  • PROGRAM button: Turns program mode ON/OFF for Audio CDs.
  • Search buttons (<< / >>): Searches backward/forward within tracks.
  • Skip buttons (|< / >|): Skips to the next/previous track or the beginning of the current track.
  • OPEN/CLOSE button: Opens and closes the disc tray.
  • PURE DIRECT button: Toggles PURE DIRECT mode ON/OFF.
  • DISPLAY button: Switches the time display on the front panel (elapsed time, remaining time for track/disc, filename for Data Discs/USB).
  • ENTER button: Confirms track numbers in program input mode.
  • CLEAR button: Clears programmed tracks.
  • REPEAT button: Sets repeat playback mode (single track, all tracks).
  • RANDOM button: Sets random-sequence play.
  • A/B button: Sets A-B repeat for Audio CDs.
  • Pause button (||): Pauses playback.
  • Play button (▷): Starts playback.
  • Stop button (■): Stops playback.

Connecting the Amplifier:

The CD-S700 offers three ways to connect to an amplifier:

  1. ANALOG OUT terminals: Use the supplied RCA stereo cable to connect to the CD (or AUX) terminals of the amplifier. Ensure correct left (L) and right (R) connections.
  2. DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) terminal: Use a commercially available optical cable to connect to the optical input terminal of an amplifier.
  3. DIGITAL OUT (COAXIAL) terminal: Use a commercially available coaxial cable to connect to the digital input terminal of an amplifier. Note that the digital output is turned off when PURE DIRECT mode is active.

Connecting USB Devices:

USB mass storage class devices can be connected to the front panel USB port. The unit supports FAT16 or FAT32 formats. Playback from USB devices starts automatically in order by date and time of creation. It is crucial not to disconnect the USB device during playback or when the USB indicator blinks to avoid data loss or malfunction. Yamaha recommends backing up files on USB devices as it accepts no liability for data loss.

Power Connection:

For Asia and General models, the VOLTAGE SELECTOR on the rear panel must be set to the local main voltage (110/120/220/230-240V, 50/60Hz) before plugging in the power cable. Incorrect voltage selection can cause damage or fire. For Europe and U.K. models, the power cable is simply plugged into the AC IN on the rear panel and then into a wall outlet. The unit is never fully disconnected from the AC power source as long as it's plugged in, even when turned off by the POWER button.

Maintenance Features:

Handling Compact Discs:

  • Always handle discs carefully to prevent scratches.
  • When writing on the label side of a disc, use a felt-tip pen or similar writing tool, not a hard-tipped tool like a ballpoint pen or pencil, to avoid damaging the disc.
  • Do not warp discs.
  • Store discs in appropriate cases when not in use.
  • Clean discs with a clean, dry cloth, wiping straight outward from the center, not in a circular motion.
  • Avoid using disc cleaners, record sprays, anti-static sprays, or other chemical-based liquids, as these can damage the disc surface.
  • Do not expose discs to direct sunlight, high temperatures, or high humidity for extended periods to prevent warping or damage.
  • Do not use nonstandard shaped discs (e.g., heart-shaped) as they may damage the unit.
  • Avoid discs with tape, stickers, or paste, as they can get stuck or damage the unit.

Battery Installation for Remote Control:

  • To install batteries, slide off the battery compartment cover, insert two AA (R6, UM-3) batteries according to the polarity markings, and slide the cover back on.
  • Change both batteries when the remote control's operating range decreases.
  • Ensure correct polarities.
  • Remove batteries if the remote control will not be used for an extended period.
  • Do not mix old and new batteries or different types of batteries (e.g., alkaline and manganese).
  • Dispose of leaked batteries immediately, avoiding contact with skin or clothing, and clean the battery compartment thoroughly.
  • Dispose of batteries correctly according to local regulations.

Remote Control Handling:

  • Ensure a clear line of sight between the remote control and the unit's sensor.
  • Do not spill liquids on or drop the remote control.
  • Avoid storing the remote control in high humidity, high temperatures, extremely low temperatures, or dusty places.
  • Do not expose the remote control sensor to strong lighting, especially inverter-type fluorescent lamps, as this can interfere with proper operation. If necessary, reposition the unit away from direct lighting.

Troubleshooting:

The manual provides a detailed troubleshooting section to help users identify and resolve common issues, such as the unit not turning on, disc tray not closing, playback not starting, USB playback issues, no sound, skipping, humming, or remote control malfunction. It offers solutions like checking cable connections, cleaning discs, replacing discs, adjusting amplifier settings, and repositioning the unit or other components. For persistent problems, users are advised to contact an authorized Yamaha dealer or service center.
