ENGINE OPERATION
50 2V Operation Manual
STARTING ENGINE
Use the following procedure to start the engine.
1. Make sure you follow the procedures stated in
the Daily Checks on page 41.
2. Release all clutches and turn the starting key to
OFF.
3. Make sure the fuel tank fuel cock is in the ON
position.
4. Turn the battery switch on.
5. Turn the key from OFF to ON. Check that all
indicators and/or gauges are normal. See your
specific machine/equipment operation manual
for details.
6. Set the engine speed control to the LOW
position.
Note: The glow plugs are used to assist
starting in cold weather conditions. If the
engine is being operated in normal or
warm weather conditions, the engine
may be started without first heating the
glow plugs.
7. Depending on the type of key switch installed
on your machine/equipment, heat position will
work one of two ways.
Note: Do not activate the glow plugs for longer
than 20 seconds. Longer activation may
damage the glow plugs.
Turn the key counterclockwise from the OFF
position and hold for 15 seconds or until
indicator light (if equipped) goes out. The
switch is spring-loaded and will automatically
return to the OFF position.
Turn the key to the ON position. This will
automatically activate a glow plug timer. An
indicator light (if equipped) will go out when
properly heated.
8. Turn the key clockwise to the START position.
Release the key as soon as the engine starts. It
will return to the ON position.
IF THE ENGINE DOES NOT
START
If the engine fails to start:
1. Wait until the engine comes to a complete stop
before you attempt to start it again to avoid
starter motor damage.
2. Wait at least 30 seconds before you attempt to
start the engine again to allow the battery
voltage to recover and to avoid starter motor
damage.
A DANGER
FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD!
Only use the key switch to start the
engine.
NEVER jumpstart the engine. Sparks
caused by jumping the battery to the
starter terminals may cause a fire or
explosion.
