Overview

This document provides user instructions for the 3M 9502+N95 Particulate Respirator, a standard-size headband respirator designed for occupational use by adults. It is important for users to read and understand these instructions before use and to keep them for future reference.

Function Description

The 3M 9502+N95 Particulate Respirator is designed to help protect against certain airborne particles. It holds dual approval as a United States (US) National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) N95 particulate respirator and as a China GB2626-2019 KN95 particulate respirator. This means it offers at least 95% filtration efficiency against solid and liquid aerosols that do not contain oil.

This respirator is intended for use in environments where particles such as those from grinding, sanding, sweeping, sawing, bagging, or processing minerals, coal, iron ore, metal, flour, wood, pollen, and certain other substances are present. It is also suitable for liquid or non-oil-based particles from sprays that do not emit oil aerosols or vapors. The respirator can help reduce inhalation exposures to certain airborne biological particles, including mold, Bacillus anthracis, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. However, it is crucial to understand that it cannot eliminate the risk of contracting infection, illness, or disease.

The respirator does not supply oxygen and should not be used in atmospheres containing less than 19.5% oxygen. It is also not to be used when concentrations of contaminants are immediately dangerous to life and health, are unknown, or when concentrations exceed 10 times the permissible exposure limit (PEL) or applicable government regulations, whichever is lower. For use in China, it should not be used for oil-based particles or when concentrations exceed the maximum allowable concentration required by the applicable regulation and standard. The maximum allowable concentration is determined by multiplying the Assigned Protection Factor (APF) provided by GB/T 18664 "Selection, Use and Maintenance of Respiratory Protective Equipment" and the permissible Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL) of the contaminant.

It is important to note that this respirator is not designed for use by children. Individuals with compromised respiratory systems, such as asthma or emphysema, should consult a physician and complete a medical evaluation prior to use.

Usage Features

Proper use of the 3M 9502+N95 respirator is critical for its effectiveness. Failure to follow all instructions and limitations, or failure to wear the respirator during all times of exposure, can reduce its effectiveness and may result in sickness or death.

Before occupational use, a written respiratory protection program must be implemented, meeting all local government requirements. In the United States, employers must comply with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134, which includes medical evaluation, training, fit testing, and applicable OSHA substance-specific standards. In Canada, CSA standard Z94.4 requirements and/or applicable jurisdictional requirements must be met. For use in China, refer to China national standard GB/T 18664 for selection, use, and maintenance of respirators.

The fitting instructions must be followed each time the respirator is worn to ensure a proper seal. The fitting process involves several steps:

  1. Place the respirator against your face with the nosepiece across the bridge of your nose, holding it under the chin.
  2. Pull the top strap over your head, resting it high at the top of your head.
  3. Pull the bottom strap over your head, positioning it around the neck, below the ear.
  4. Place fingertips of both hands at the top of the metal nosepiece and mold it to the shape of the nose bridge by pushing inwards and moving fingertips down both sides. Pinching the nosepiece with only one hand may result in a less effective fit.

A user seal check must be conducted before each use. This involves covering the front of the respirator with both hands, being careful not to disturb its position, and exhaling sharply. If air leaks around the nose bridge, the nosepiece should be readjusted. If air leaks at the respirator edges, the straps should be worked back along the side of the hand. If a proper seal cannot be achieved, the respirator should not be used, and the supervisor should be consulted.

The respirator should not be used with beards or other facial hair, or any other conditions that prevent a good seal between the face and the sealing surface of the respirator. It is designed to protect lungs against certain airborne contaminants but will not prevent entry through other routes such as the skin, which would require additional personal protective equipment (PPE).

Maintenance Features

The 3M 9502+N95 respirator is a disposable filtering facepiece respirator and is not designed to be altered, washed, abused, or misused.

Before each use, the respirator must be inspected to ensure it is in good operating condition. This inspection should include examining all parts, such as the two headbands, attachment points, and noseclip, for any signs of damage. Filtering facepieces should be inspected for holes or any other damage. If any damage or missing parts are observed, the respirator must be disposed of immediately and replaced.

When not in use, the respirator should be stored away from contaminated areas. For storage, it should be kept in its original packaging, away from dust, sunlight, extreme temperatures, excessive moisture, and damaging chemicals. When stored according to the specified temperature range of -20°C to +30°C and maximum relative humidity of <80%, the product can be used until the "use by" date indicated on the packaging. Always inspect the product and conduct a user seal check before use, even if it is within the "use by" date. If a proper seal cannot be achieved, the respirator should not be used.

If the respirator becomes damaged, soiled, or if breathing becomes difficult, the user must leave the contaminated area immediately and replace the respirator. Used products should be disposed of in accordance with applicable regulations.

The respirator contains no components made from natural rubber latex. When folding the respirator, users should avoid sharp bends on the metal nosepiece by placing their fingertips behind the nosepiece.
