Questions and Answers

Overview

This document describes the 3M Air Control Devices: Air Regulating Kits, specifically the 3M™ Airline Adapter Kit W-3060, Air Regulating Valve Kit W-3061 (with W-3062 Valve), and Air Regulating Kit W-3197 (with W-3195 Low Pressure Connector). These kits are designed to be used with 3M™ 6000DIN or 7000 Series Full Facepieces to provide positive pressure supplied air respiratory protection. They are classified as Type C or CE supplied air respirators by NIOSH when used in a complete system (supplied air hose, valve, breathing tube, and headpiece).

Function Description:

These air control devices create a slight positive pressure atmosphere within the full facepiece, which helps prevent airborne contaminants from entering. They provide a continuous airflow to the user. The W-3061 Air Regulating Kit and W-3060 Airline Adapter Kits allow manual adjustment of the airflow between upper and lower limits to suit user comfort. The W-3197 Air Regulating Kit (low pressure) is designed for specific low-pressure air supply ranges.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Airflow: All kits are designed to provide a continuous airflow of 4 to 15 cfm (115 to 425 lpm).
  • Supply Pressure (W-3061 Kit, W-3062 Valve, W-3253 Assembly with W-9435 Hose):
    • 25 ft (7.62 m) hose: 15-25 psig (1.05-1.76 kg/cm²)
    • 50 ft (15.24 m) hose: 18-25 psig (1.27-1.76 kg/cm²)
    • 100 ft (30.48 m) hose: 19-30 psig (1.34-2.11 kg/cm²)
    • 200 ft (60.96 m) hose: 25-40 psig (1.76-2.81 kg/cm²)
    • 300 ft (91.44 m) hose: 25-55 psig (1.76-3.87 kg/cm²)
  • Supply Pressure (W-3197 Kit, W-3195 Valve, W-3255 Assembly with W-3020 Hose):
    • 25 ft (7.62 m) hose: 7-11 psig (0.5-0.77 kg/cm²)
    • 50 ft (15.24 m) hose: 7-11 psig (0.5-0.77 kg/cm²)
    • 100 ft (30.48 m) hose: 7-12 psig (0.5-0.84 kg/cm²)
  • Compressor Volume Requirements: Approximately 9 CFM (255 lpm) per valve.
  • Maximum Line Pressure: Must be kept within safe limits, 125 psig (8.75 kg/cm²).
  • Air Temperature: Air entering the compressed air hose W-3020 must not exceed 160° F (71° C).
  • Breathing Air Quality: Must meet at least the requirements of Grade D breathing air (CGA G-7.1 in the US, CSA standard Z180.1 in Canada).
  • NIOSH Cautions and Limitations:
    • Not for use in atmospheres containing less than 19.5 percent oxygen.
    • Not for use in atmospheres immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH).
    • Do not exceed maximum use concentrations established by regulatory standards.
    • Airline respirators require respirable air meeting Grade D or higher quality.
    • Only specified pressure ranges and hose lengths are to be used.
    • All approved respirators must be selected, fitted, used, and maintained according to MSHA, OSHA, and other applicable regulations.
    • Never substitute, modify, add, or omit parts. Use only exact replacement parts.

Usage Features:

  • Compatibility: Designed for use with 3M™ 6000DIN or 7000 Series Full Facepieces.
  • Adjustable Airflow: The control knob on the W-3061 and W-3060 kits allows manual adjustment of airflow for user comfort.
  • Hose Length Options: W-3060 kits include various hose lengths (25, 50, or 100 ft) to fit different applications.
  • Combining Hoses: 3M™ Supplied Air Respirator System approvals allow combining two or three 100-foot lengths of W-9435, W-9435SS, or W-9445 hoses for positive pressure respirators. However, 25 or 50-foot lengths of these hoses cannot be combined. The W-3020 hose can only be used in single lengths (25, 50, or 100 ft) with no connections allowed.
  • Assembly Instructions: Detailed steps are provided for assembling the breathing tube, belt, and shoulder strap with the full facepiece. This includes removing plugs, installing adapters, securing the belt and shoulder strap, and connecting the breathing tube to the air regulating valve and facepiece adapter. Proper positioning of the breathing tube and shoulder strap is emphasized to ensure comfort, minimize restriction of head movements, and maintain a secure air supply connection.
  • Fitting Instructions: Users are directed to the 3M™ Full Facepiece 6000DIN or 7000 Series User Instructions for detailed fitting information. The entire system must meet fitting requirements before entering hazardous environments.
  • Safety Precautions: Emphasizes the importance of reading and understanding user instructions, complying with OSHA and CSA standards, and ensuring breathing air quality. Warnings are provided regarding misuse, oxygen-deficient atmospheres, unknown contaminant concentrations, IDLH conditions, and exceeding assigned protection factors. Users are instructed to leave contaminated areas immediately if any system damage, airflow decrease, breathing difficulty, dizziness, impaired vision, taste/smell of contaminants, irritation, or suspicion of inadequate protection occurs.
  • Air Supply System: Recommends installing an air purifier and pressure regulator equipment ahead of the breathing air hose connection to remove oil mist, water vapor, and particulate matter. 3M offers pre-assembled air filtering and regulating panel assemblies for this purpose. Periodic carbon monoxide (CO) monitoring is acceptable if the oil-lubricated compressor has a high-temperature alarm and automatic shut-down.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning:
    • Remove any cartridges and/or filters.
    • Clean the facepiece (excluding filters and cartridges) with 3M™ 504 Respirator Wipes or by immersing in warm cleaning solution (not exceeding 120° F / 49° C) and scrubbing with a soft brush. Neutral detergent can be added if necessary. Avoid cleaners containing lanolin or other oils.
    • Disinfect the facepiece by soaking in a solution of quaternary ammonia disinfectant or sodium hypochlorite (1 oz. [30 ML] household bleach in 2 gallons [7.5 L] of water).
    • Rinse in fresh, warm water and air dry in a non-contaminated atmosphere.
    • Clean the exterior of air control devices; do not immerse them in liquid.
  • Storage: The cleaned respirator should be stored away from contaminated areas when not in use.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: Provides a table of common problems, possible causes, and corrective actions:
    • Inadequate Airflow:
      • Possible Cause: Compressor filters plugged, muffler plugged with oil, air pressure too low, F&R Panel filter plugged, kink in air hose.
      • Corrective Action: Change filters, replace muffler discs, increase air, change filter, straighten hose.
    • Comfort Control Knob Won't Turn:
      • Possible Cause: Valve mechanism dirty.
      • Corrective Action: Clean with blast of air.
    • No Airflow:
      • Possible Cause: Compressor off, air supply line valve closed, F&R Panel regulator closed, supplied air hose not connected.
      • Corrective Action: Turn compressor on, open F&R Panel air supply line valve, open F&R Panel regulator, connect supplied air hose.
  • Inspection: Inspect all respirator components before each use to ensure proper operating condition.
