If you're not getting any hot water from your A.O. Smith Water Heater and the pilot blows out, inspect all vent joints to ensure they are properly sealed. Check both the inner and outer pipes, as well as the rear air tube seals. Also, install the A. O. Smith-provided vent cap. Reposition or replace the vent if necessary. Why won't the pilot stay lit on my A.O. Smith Water Heater?
    • S
      Steve PriceAug 25, 2025
If you're not getting any hot water from your A.O. Smith Water Heater because the pilot won't stay lit, check the gas pressure. The minimum pressure should be 4.5" W.C. (contact your gas company if needed). Tighten any loose connections, and replace parts as necessary. Ensure the flame is 3/8" in size. Change the pilot orifice and replace the gas valve if required. Bleed the system as needed.

What to do if the pilot light keeps going out on my A.O. Smith Water Heater?
    • S
      sandovalmichelleAug 28, 2025
If the pilot light won't stay lit, begin by checking the gas pressure. Then, check the thermostat MV drop-out voltage. Inspect the thermocouple connection and MV output, tightening it if loose or replacing it as necessary. Ensure the thermocouple is correctly placed in the pilot flame, about 3/8 inch should be in the flame. Check the pilot for a proper flame and consider changing the pilot orifice. Finally, check the ECO operation and for air in the pilot tube, replacing the gas valve and bleeding as necessary.

How to fix A.O. Smith Water Heater when pilot blows out?
    • R
      Robert ThomasAug 31, 2025
If the pilot blows out, check all vent joints for a proper seal, examining both the inner and outer pipe and the rear air tube seals. Ensure you have the proper vent cap installed, ideally the one provided by A. O. Smith. Check for a bent, missing, or mislocated pilot shield (on natural gas units only), replacing or repositioning it as needed. Also, inspect the outer door seal, replacing the gasket if it's missing, tightening loose screws, or properly installing the gasket if it's misinstalled.
