TECHNICAL PRECAUTIONS AND SPECIFICATIONS

Overview

The LEF Series Open Voice Selective Call Intercom is a versatile communication system designed for both residential and commercial applications, integrating master and sub stations to provide selective calling, hands-free reply, and various optional features. This system is available in several models: LEF-3 (3-call master), LEF-5 (5-call master), LEF-10 (10-call master), and LEF-10S (10-call master with all-call functionality).

Function Description

The core function of the LEF intercom system is to facilitate open voice selective communication between multiple stations. Masters can selectively call any sub station, and sub stations can initiate calls to masters. The system supports hands-free reply from sub stations, enhancing convenience.

Key operational features include:

  • Selective Calling: From any master station, users can select and call a specific sub station or another master station.
  • Hands-Free Reply: Sub stations can reply to master calls without needing to press any buttons, offering ease of use.
  • Call-in and LED Indication: Sub stations can initiate calls to master stations, which are indicated by an electronic tone and a lit LED on the master, remaining lit for approximately 20 seconds.
  • Door Answering: Master stations can answer calls from door stations, which are indicated by an electronic call tone and an LED. If a BG-10C adaptor is included, a 4-stroke chime tone can be heard through inside stations. For PanTilt MK door stations, a MYH-CU monitor will turn on for about 45 seconds.
  • Door Release: LEF-5, LEF-10, and LEF-10S models offer selective door release. Once communication is established with a door station, pressing the "KEY" button releases the corresponding door strike. This requires an RY-PA relay for each door.
  • All Call (LEF-10S only): The LEF-10S master station includes an "ALL CALL" button, enabling announcements to be made to all stations in the system. The BG-10C adaptor is required for this feature to be operable.
  • Privacy Feature: The "PRIV" button allows a calling master to enter "privacy" mode, cutting off the "listen" mode. To release from privacy, the "TALK" button must be pressed momentarily.
  • Background Music and Chime Distribution: With the BG-10C adaptor, music can be selectively distributed to all LEF station speakers, controlled by switch settings. When a call is initiated, the music mutes automatically. When a door station calls in, a chime tone is transmitted to selected inside stations.
  • External Signaling: The system supports external signaling when door or sub stations call, requiring an RY-AC/A relay and an external device.
  • Horn Speaker Integration: An AH-108 8Ω horn speaker with an LT-1 matching transformer and NP-25V capacitor can be integrated for enhanced audio output.

Usage Features

The LEF system is designed for straightforward operation with intuitive controls.

  • Master Station Controls: Master stations feature station-select buttons (1-3 for LEF-3, 1-10 for LEF-5/10/10S), a voice volume control, an "OFF" button (with an ON LED), a "PRIV" button with an LED indicator, and a "TALK" (listen) button. LEF-10S models also include an "ALL CALL" transmit button and LED, and a door release button.
  • Call Initiation: To call a master or sub, users depress the desired station selector button, then press the "TALK" button to speak. Releasing "TALK" allows listening. For an attention-getter tone, "PRIV" and "TALK" can be pressed together.
  • Receiving Calls: When a sub station calls, its LED lights up, and a tone sounds. Users depress the lit station selector button, then press "TALK" to speak and release to listen. When another master calls, the responding master answers hands-free, and the "Occupied" lamp illuminates.
  • Call Tone Adjustment: A 3-position volume switch, located under the directory cover plate, allows adjustment of the call tone volume to low, medium, or high.
  • Call Tone in Occupied Mode: A selector switch allows users to choose how call tones behave when the master is in occupied mode. Position "B" (factory default for surface mount masters) allows the call tone to be heard at a muted level. Position "A" mutes the call tone at the master while the system is occupied, which is recommended when a BG-10C is included to allow the door chime to be heard throughout the system.
  • Wiring Flexibility: The system supports various wiring configurations, including loop-wired systems with multi-conductor shielded cable, all-master systems, single-master systems, and intermixed systems. It is recommended to use 3-conductor wiring for sub and door stations, even in single-master homerun systems, to allow for future expansion.

Maintenance Features

The manual provides guidance for installation and troubleshooting to ensure reliable operation and longevity of the system.

  • Installation Precautions: Users are warned against dismantling or altering the unit, connecting non-specified power sources, or installing two power supplies in parallel. The unit should be kept away from water and liquids. When reusing existing doorbell wires, it is crucial to disconnect the doorbell transformer first. Only qualified technicians should perform installations.
  • Environmental Considerations: The unit should not be installed in locations subject to constant vibration, direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, dust, oil, chemicals, moisture, humidity, steam, smoke, or near interference-generating devices (e.g., dimmer switches, alarm panels, fluorescent lights).
  • Surge Protection: For DC-powered systems, using the specified Aiphone power supply is crucial. During electrical storms, unplugging the power supply from the AC outlet is recommended to prevent surge damage. Installing a surge arrester (Aiphone model SA-1) is advised, especially if the power supply lacks a GROUND terminal.
  • Wiring Best Practices: Intercom wires should be kept at least 20 inches (50cm) away from AC 100~240V wiring to prevent induced noise and malfunction. In areas near broadcasting station antennas, radio frequency interference may affect the system.
  • Accessing the Unit for Wiring: Instructions are provided for safely opening the unit to make wire connections, including removing the operation plate and lifting the front of the intercom off the back chassis.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: A comprehensive troubleshooting guide addresses common issues such as no call tone or LED, no communication, multiple LEDs lighting up, door release not working, All Call or chime malfunctions, feedback, weak communication, and AC hum. Solutions include checking jumper installations, wire connections, adjusting volume levels, and ensuring proper wiring separation from AC sources.
  • Cleaning: The LEF equipment should be cleaned with a soft cloth dampened with a neutral household cleanser. Abrasive cleaners should never be used.
  • Warranty: The warranty covers defects in material and workmanship for one year under normal use and service. It does not cover misuse, neglect, accident, or alterations outside the factory, nor damage caused by batteries. Warranty service is limited to bench repairs at designated locations.
