Overview

This document describes the Brill 38 VB/RL scarifier, a petrol-powered device designed for scarifying and aerating lawns in private areas. It is intended for use on dry, short-cut grass.

Function Description:

The Brill 38 VB/RL is a scarifier and aerator, primarily used to loosen and ventilate the soil of lawns. It features a cutter spindle with blades for scarifying and a fan roller for aerating. The working depth of the cutter spindle can be adjusted using a rotary knob, with settings ranging from 1 to 5. The device is equipped with a safety control bar that immediately stops the engine when released, and a back cover for protection. A visual safety indicator confirms proper fixation of the working shaft, showing a green mark when correctly secured. The engine is a fixed-speed combustion motor, meaning its RPM cannot be adjusted.

  • Engine Oil: SAE 10W-30, capacity 0.25 l
  • Fuel: Unleaded regular-grade petrol

Usage Features:

Before commissioning, a visual inspection is mandatory to ensure no loose, damaged, or worn cutting unit or fastening components are present. The device should only be operated in technically sound condition, with safety and protection devices fully functional. Users must wear protective glasses and hearing protection, long trousers, and sturdy shoes. Hands and feet should be kept away from the cutting unit, and third parties should be kept out of the danger area. Foreign objects must be removed from the work area.

To start the engine (especially when cold or after long periods of inactivity, or at temperatures below 10°C), the primer button 'a' should be pressed 6 times, followed by primer button 'b' 10 times. The control button must then be pressed, and the engine control bar pulled towards the upper handle and held. The starter cord is then pulled quickly and allowed to retract slowly. The engine should be allowed to warm up. Once the engine is at operating temperature, the primer buttons should not be pressed. The engine speed is fixed and cannot be adjusted. To turn off the engine, release the engine control bar. The cutter spindle will continue to rotate for a short period after shutdown, so avoid touching the underside of the equipment immediately.

The working depth is adjusted only when the engine is off and the cutter spindle is stationary. For new blades, the rotary knob should be set to position 2 max. The correct working depth depends on lawn conditions and blade wear. If the scarifier stops or the engine does not pull through, the working depth should be reduced. Always mow the lawn before scarifying. The device should be guided at walking pace, always across slopes, and never on steep slopes. It should not be tilted or transported with the engine running.

Maintenance Features:

Maintenance and cleaning should only be performed after removing the spark plug connector. Protective gloves should be worn when working near the cutter spindle. The device should not be sprayed with water, as water ingress can cause malfunctions. After each use, the equipment should be cleaned with a spatula or cloth.

Engine care includes checking the air filter, spark plug, and changing the oil. Used oil should be drained when the engine is warm for quick and complete drainage. A suitable container should be placed under the engine for collection. The oil dipstick and filler neck are removed, the device is tilted back until the handle rests on the ground, and the oil is allowed to drain completely. After righting the device, 0.25 l of SAE 10W-30 oil is refilled. Used engine oil must be disposed of environmentally friendly, preferably at a recycling center or service station, not with domestic waste, into drains, or on the ground.

The scarifier roller can be removed by unscrewing the bearing screw (1), tilting up the bearing half (2), and lifting the roller from the lower bearing half, then pulling it out from the drive side (3). Reassembly is in reverse order. The aerating roller is removed and its steel spring hooks replaced similarly to the scarifier roller. Blades are removed by unscrewing the hexagonal bolt (1), carefully pulling the ball bearing (2) from the spindle (8), and then removing the thrust collar (3), washer (4), short spacer sleeve (5), blades (6), and long spacer sleeves in sequence. Pay attention to the mounting position of the blades before removal.

For storage, the engine should be allowed to cool down, and the scarifier stored in a dry place. To save space, the wing nuts on the upper handle can be unscrewed, and the handle folded down. The engine should not be stored near open flames or heat sources due to fire and explosion risk.
