MAINTENANCE E-9
ENGINE STARTING PROCEDURE:
CAUTION!
Do not start engine in enclosed area. Fumes could cause operator illness.
CAUTION!
Make sure all people are in a safe position before starting.
1. Ensure the battery disconnect switch is “ON”.
2. Set the engine speed control level (throttle) to idle position.
3. Put threshing cylinder lever to neutral.
4. Make sure the ground drive control is in neutral.
5. Make sure the clutch switch is in the off position.
6. Turn off all accessory augers.
7. Insert key, rotate key clockwise to the start position and hold, until engine starts.
8. When the engine starts, release the key and adjust engine speed for warm up (see engine
manual).

Use this guide as a supplement to the “Faults, Causes and Remedies” chart in the Deutz Operators
Manual supplied with the combine when delivered. If you did not receive or have misplaced this
manual, please call our Service Department at (515) 382-3506 for a replacement.
This guide is designed to help you diagnose and correct the condition that has caused the engine to
stop running or lack performance on ALMACO equipment. (SPC20, HP5, SHP50 plot combines and
FH92 forage harvesters)
If it becomes necessary to contact ALMACO, please have the following information ready.
1. Model and serial number of the combine (location - SHP50, on the right hand side dash
panel, - HP5, steering valve post - SPC20 and FH92, dash panel)
2. Model and serial number of the engine (location - top of engine on the valve cover)
3. Date the machine was put into service (delivery date on original invoice or delivery ticket)
4. Is a thermal shut down circuit used? (switch location - located behind the access cover in
front of and to the inside of #1 injector pump and directly below the alternator. Some machines
have a red warning indicator lamp in the dash to indicate over-heating)
5. Describe how the engine stopped (i.e., gradually, instantly, engine will not start)
This information will expedite any correspondence with ALMACO or an Authorized Deutz Repair
Center.
Diagnostic Equipment
Tools needed to diagnose and repair:
1. Digital VOM (volt / ohm meter)
2. 12 volt test light
