What does ER1 message mean on my Amtrol Water Heater Smart Control™?
    • L
      Lisa RodriguezAug 14, 2025
If your Amtrol Water Heater's Smart Control™ is displaying an ER1 message, it could indicate: * The temperature sensor is unplugged. Ensure the sensor is plugged into the Smart Control™ receptacle. * The temperature sensor is damaged or faulty. Replace the sensor wire (thermistor). * There is water in the therm-well. Replace the therm-well.

What to do if Amtrol BoilerMate RTR Water Heater water is too hot and/ or shows ER2 message?
    • D
Dr. Daniel Jenkins DVMAug 25, 2025
If the water from your Amtrol Water Heater is too hot, or you're seeing an ER2 message on the Smart Control™, consider these possibilities: * The plumbing might be incorrect. If the Boiler Return is connected to the suction side of a heating circulator, overheating can occur when the home's heat is on. Correct the plumbing. * The temperature setting could be too high. Reduce the temperature setpoint. * The temperature sensor may not be fully inserted. Re-insert the thermistor wire or temperature sensor. * A zone valve might be stuck. Repair or replace it. * The flow check valve could be stuck open. Clean, repair, or replace it.

Why is my Amtrol BoilerMate® Water Heater making noise?
    • M
      Mark RiveraAug 27, 2025
If your Amtrol BoilerMate® is making noise, it could be due to several reasons: * There might be air trapped in the boiler loop. Purge the boiler loop and inspect the air elimination equipment. * The circulator pump could be faulty. Repair or replace the pump. * Thermal expansion can cause noise. Make sure the correct Therm-X-Trol® or equivalent thermal expansion tank is installed and adjusted properly. * During the initial fill, some noise is normal. When the system is first pressurized, a creaking or hissing sound is normal. This noise should stop after pressurizing. Always check for leaks.

What to do if the relief valve is dripping on my Amtrol BoilerMate RTR Water Heater?
    • J
      Joanna ConleyAug 31, 2025
If the relief valve on your Amtrol Water Heater is dripping or opening, here are some potential causes: * There might not be a thermal expansion tank installed. Install the correct Therm-X-Trol® or equivalent thermal expansion tank. * The thermal expansion tank might be set up incorrectly. Make sure the precharge air pressure matches the static water pressure. * The city water pressure could be too high. If it's over 80psi, install a Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV). * The system might be overheating. Find out what's causing the over-temperature condition and fix it. * The relief valve itself could be faulty. Replace the relief valve.

Why is the water from my Amtrol BoilerMate RTR discolored?
    • W
      William AllenSep 3, 2025
If the water from your Amtrol Water Heater faucet is discolored, it could be due to: * Poor water quality. Have the water tested for contaminants. Common issues include blue/green water (copper discoloration due to low pH), black staining/sulfur odor (hydrogen sulfide), white deposits (hard water), and red staining (high iron levels). * Sediment or suspended particles. Install a sediment filter and purge the unit more often to prevent future problems.

Why won't the circulator or zone valve operate on my Amtrol Water Heater?
    • R
      rcarterSep 10, 2025
If the circulator or zone valve isn't working when your Amtrol Water Heater calls for hot water, here are some things to check: * Incorrect or loose wiring. Check the connections against the wiring diagrams in this manual. * The Pre Purge (PRE) setting is too high. The PRE setting delays circulator startup, which isn't usually needed in residential applications. Reduce PRE or set it to 0 if the problem continues. * A fuse in the Smart Control™ is blown. Remove the 4 screws inside the Smart Control™ wiring box and replace the glass fuse(s) with those of the same rating. * The circulator pump is faulty. Repair or replace the pump.

How to troubleshoot no hot water in my Amtrol BoilerMate RTR Water Heater?
    • T
      Tammy GallowayNov 16, 2025
If you're not getting any hot water from your Amtrol Water Heater, here's what might be happening: * There might be no power reaching the unit. Check the circuit breaker, boiler emergency switch, and boiler reset switch. * There could be air trapped in the heat exchanger loop. Try purging the air and make sure the circulator is on the Boiler Supply. Also, check the air vents. * A faulty circulator or zone valve could be the culprit. Inspect them and repair or replace if needed. * The BoilerMate™ thermostat might be defective. Check its continuity while turning the knob to see if the circuit opens and closes as it should. * The Smart Control™ could be malfunctioning. If it's blank, check the power. Test the continuity across the orange and blue leads while the green light is on. ...

Why is my Amtrol BoilerMate RTR Water Heater producing insufficient hot water?
    • B
      Brenda JohnsonNov 20, 2025
If your Amtrol Water Heater isn't providing enough hot water, here's what could be happening: * The demand for hot water might be exceeding the heater's capacity. Check the sizing of the heater based on your household size and the boiler's output. * The temperature setting could be too low. Try increasing the temperature setpoint. * The boiler might not be providing sufficient output. Wire the system for priority. If the problem continues, consider adding more storage or increasing the tank size. * The heat exchanger could be fouled. Check the Boiler Supply/Boiler Return temperatures during a cold startup. If the difference is less than 20°F, clean the heat exchanger. Also, install water treatment equipment to prevent this from happening again. * There might not be enough flow t...
