CODES AND REGULATIONS, IN THE ABSENCE OF SUCH CODES,
FOLLOW THE CURRENT EDITIONS OF THE NATIONAL PLUMBING
CODE AND NATIONAL ELECTRIC CODE, AS APPLICABLE.
EXPLOSION OR RUPTURE HAZARD. THE
EXPANSION TANK MUST BE OPERATED SO
THAT THE PRESSURE DOES NOT EXCEED THE MAXIMUM
WORKING PRESSURE.
EXPLOSION OR RUPTURE HAZARD A relief
valve must be installed to prevent pressure in
excess of local code requirement or maximum working pressure
designated in the Product Manual, whichever is less. Do not expose
Product to freezing temperatures or temperatures in excess of 240° F.
Do not adjust the pre-charge or re-pressurize this Product except for any
adjustments required at the time of initial installation, especially if
Product is corroded, damaged or with diminished integrity. Adjustments
to pre-charge must be done at ambient temperature only. Failure to
properly size the Product or follow these instructions may result in
excessive strain on the system lead to Product failure, serious or fatal
personal injury, leakage and/or property damage.

Do you have a question about the Amtrol EXTROL AX-10-DD and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The document describes the Amtrol Extrol® AX Series Pressurized Expansion Tanks (ASME), providing installation and operation instructions for models AX-10-DD through AX-280(V). These tanks are designed for use in closed-loop hydronic heating systems to accommodate the expansion and contraction of system water due to temperature changes, thereby maintaining stable system pressure and preventing damage.

Function Description:

The Extrol® AX Series tanks are ASME-certified pressurized expansion tanks. Their primary function is to absorb the expanding water in a closed hydronic heating system as it heats up, and then return that water to the system as it cools down. This process prevents excessive pressure buildup, which could otherwise lead to the activation of relief valves, system damage, or inefficient operation. The tanks feature a butyl diaphragm that separates the system water from a factory pre-charged air cushion. This diaphragm prevents waterlogging and ensures that the air cushion remains intact, providing consistent pressure control. The tanks are designed for use in non-potable, closed-loop hydronic heating systems and are explicitly warned against use in radiant heating, potable water, or open systems due to the oxygenated water in such systems, which can cause internal corrosion and premature product failure. For potable water systems, a Therm-X-Trol® is recommended, and for radiant heating systems, a Radiant Extrol® is suggested.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Maximum Operating Pressure: Stamped on the nameplate of the tank. This is a critical specification that must not be exceeded to prevent explosion or rupture.
  • Maximum Operating Temperature: 240°F (116°C). The product should not be exposed to temperatures exceeding this limit or to freezing temperatures.
  • Pre-charge Pressure: Factory pre-charged (non-glycol application) to 12 PSIG unless otherwise noted on the tank label. This pre-charge should be checked and adjusted only at ambient temperature during initial installation. Any adjustments to pre-charge must be done carefully, especially if the product shows signs of corrosion or damage.
  • Materials: The document mentions a butyl diaphragm. The product contains lead, as indicated by the California Proposition 65 warning.
  • ASME Certification: The tanks are ASME certified, indicating compliance with specific safety and quality standards for pressure vessels.

Usage Features:

  • Closed-Loop Hydronic Systems: Specifically designed for closed-loop hydronic heating systems where oxygenated water is not present.
  • Pressure Control: Maintains stable system pressure by absorbing expanding water and preventing pressure spikes.
  • Air Cushion: Utilizes a factory pre-charged air cushion separated by a butyl diaphragm to prevent waterlogging and ensure efficient operation.
  • Installation Location: The tank should be installed on the suction side of the pump, at the point of no pressure change, to prevent pump cavitation and ensure proper system flow. It should be installed on the same level as the boiler.
  • Piping Diagrams: The manual provides several suggested piping diagrams illustrating various installation configurations, including those with air eliminators, air separators, suction diffusers, and automatic fill valves. These diagrams emphasize the importance of proper placement relative to the boiler, pump, and other system components.
  • Connection Point: The tank requires a universal connection to the Extrol sealed air cushion, which must not be connected to an air separator or other air collection device.
  • Drain Valve: The system should include a drain valve to allow for draining the system and checking the tank's pre-charge.
  • Isolation Valve: An isolation valve should be installed between the tank and the system to allow for servicing the tank without draining the entire system.

Maintenance Features:

  • Pre-charge Check and Adjustment: The pre-charge pressure should be checked and adjusted at the time of initial installation, at ambient temperature, to match the minimum operating pressure of the system. This involves draining the system water from the tank, checking the air pressure with an accurate pressure gauge, and adding or releasing air as needed.
  • Annual Inspection: The manual implies the need for periodic checks, as it warns against adjusting pre-charge if the product is corroded, damaged, or has diminished integrity. Regular inspection for signs of corrosion, leaks, or malfunctioning is crucial.
  • Professional Installation and Service: Installation and any significant maintenance (beyond initial pre-charge adjustment) must be performed by a licensed professional. This ensures compliance with local and state codes and proper functioning.
  • Relief Valve: A relief valve must be installed in the system to prevent pressure in excess of local code requirements or the tank's maximum working pressure, whichever is less. This is a critical safety feature.
  • Waterlogging Check: The manual describes a procedure to check for waterlogging by closing the isolation valve, draining the tank, and checking the air charge. If water comes out when the air charge is checked, the diaphragm may be compromised, indicating a need for professional assessment or replacement.
  • Warranty: The document mentions a warranty (AX Series Models: One (1) Year Limited Warranty) and directs users to www.amtrol.com for complete warranty details.

Safety Warnings:

The document emphasizes numerous safety warnings, including:

  • Explosion or Rupture Hazard: Due to exceeding maximum working pressure, improper pre-charge adjustment, or exposure to extreme temperatures.
  • Personal Injury and Property Damage: Resulting from failure to follow instructions, improper installation, or product malfunction.
  • Corrosion and Premature Failure: If used in radiant heating, potable water, or open systems.
  • Lead Exposure: The product contains lead, requiring a Proposition 65 warning.
  • Professional Installation: Mandated for safety and warranty validity.
  • Regular Inspection: To identify signs of corrosion or damage.

In summary, the Amtrol Extrol® AX Series tanks are robust, ASME-certified expansion tanks designed for critical pressure management in closed-loop hydronic heating systems. Proper installation by a licensed professional, adherence to specified operating parameters, and regular maintenance are essential for safe and efficient operation, as well as to ensure the longevity of both the tank and the heating system.
