Overview

The Andatech ALX3000 Ignition Interlock Device is a state-of-the-art system designed to prevent drink driving by measuring the concentration of alcohol in a breath sample. It utilizes an electrochemical fuel cell to detect alcohol, converting the measurement into a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) which is then displayed to the user. If the detected alcohol level exceeds a pre-set limit, the device will prevent the vehicle from starting.

Function Description

The ALX3000 operates by requiring a breath sample before the vehicle can be started. Once the vehicle ignition is turned on, the user presses the "Enter" button on the handset to initiate the device. After a brief warm-up period, the device will display "BLOW," prompting the user to provide a breath sample. The user must take a deep breath, place their lips completely around the mouthpiece, and blow steadily into it. The device then analyzes the breath sample and displays the result.

If the breath test is passed (i.e., the alcohol level is below the set limit), a countdown will begin, allowing the user a specific timeframe (defaulting to 5 minutes) to start the engine. If the test is failed (i.e., the alcohol level is above the set limit), a temporary lock-out will occur, preventing the vehicle from starting. A "FAIL" message will be displayed, accompanied by different alarm sounds depending on the alcohol concentration: three short beeps for a low level and one long beep for 10 seconds for a high level. After a failed test, the ALX3000 automatically locks for 15 minutes, during which retests are not permitted. All events, including passed and failed tests, are recorded within the ALX3000's memory.

The device also incorporates features for driver changes and emergency bypass. For a driver change, the vehicle ignition must be turned off, and both the Menu and Enter buttons on the handset must be held for 3 seconds. This blocks the ALX3000, returns it to standby mode, and activates a new startup procedure for the next driver. In an emergency, the vehicle can be started without a breath test using a single-use emergency code provided during installation. Activating this override requires the user to contact an authorized service center within 72 hours, as the vehicle may otherwise be permanently locked from starting until the interlock is removed, potentially incurring towing costs. The override PIN code is entered via the device's menu, and the service center must be visited within 72 hours of activation.

The ALX3000 is designed for vehicles with a 12V to 24V power supply and complies with the EN 50436-1: 2014 (E) standard. It features a handset with an LCD screen, menu and enter buttons, and a mouthpiece. The control box, which stores all events, connects to the vehicle's electrical system.

Usage Features

To ensure proper operation and accurate results, several guidelines must be followed:

  • Mouthpiece Use: A clean mouthpiece should be used for each test and replaced after any positive BAC test result or if it becomes dirty.
  • Environmental Factors: Avoid exposing the ALX3000 to smoke or other chemical products, as these can damage the sensor or affect readings. Allow at least one minute after smoking before testing.
  • Alcohol Consumption: A minimum 15-minute interval is required after consuming alcohol, eating foods with alcohol (like ripe fruit), or rinsing with alcoholic mouthwash to prevent false readings from mouth alcohol residue. Rinsing with water or non-alcoholic drinks does not substitute for this interval.
  • Rising BAC: A person's BAC can continue to rise for up to 2 hours after drinking. If a test result is close to the designated BAC limit, it is recommended to wait and retest after 20 minutes.
  • Safe Operation: The handset should not be placed on the vehicle floor while driving to avoid interfering with pedals. The device should not be used if it is unsafe to do so while driving. If a breath test is required during driving, the vehicle should be parked in a safe location before performing the test. Failure to perform a random breath test will shorten the service interval and be recorded.
  • Hygiene: Personal mouthpieces should be used for hygiene reasons and checked/replaced frequently to ensure proper device operation.
  • Tampering: Any operation, abuse, misuse, or tampering with the ALX3000 is a violation of the law and can lead to fines and legal liability.

Maintenance Features

The ALX3000 requires regular servicing and calibration to maintain its accuracy and functionality.

  • Service and Calibration Schedule: The device must be serviced and calibrated every 12 months from the initial installation date. This period may vary based on local legal standards. The service cycle is 365 days, and the number of remaining days until the next calibration is displayed on the device. A warning message will appear if the service date is less than 7 days away. The ALX3000 cannot be used to take a test once its calibration due date has passed.
  • Authorized Service: Service and calibration can only be performed by certified service centers. Users are advised not to clean the instrument with liquids; only a dry cloth should be used.
  • Dismounting: Removal of the ALX3000 should also be performed by a certified service center to ensure proper vehicle operation afterwards.
  • Control Box Removal (for service): If requested by Andatech for service, the control box can be removed by following specific instructions: switch off the engine, locate the control box, disconnect the two plugs connecting it to the car, attach the provided override plug into the large plug still connected to the car (this is crucial for the car to start normally), and then safely pack and send the control box back to Andatech.
  • Warranty: The manufacturer provides a 1-year warranty from the date of purchase, covering defects in workmanship or material under normal use. This warranty does not cover calibration costs, damage from accidents, misuse, unauthorized modification, loss of parts, tampering, or improper power input/cable connection. It also excludes products located outside Australia. Users are encouraged to register their warranty online and receive calibration reminders.
  • Disposal: Used devices should be disposed of according to local waste disposal regulations as hazardous waste. Users should contact relevant local authorities or waste disposal companies for guidance.
