Overview

This document describes the ARRIS SURFboard® SB8200 DOCSIS® 3.1 Cable Modem, a high-speed device designed to provide significantly faster Internet connection speeds for home or small business networks. It connects directly to a computer or router via an Ethernet connection, offering enhanced downstream (send) and upstream (receive) capabilities over a broadband connection.

Function Description

The SB8200 serves as a bridge between your coaxial cable connection and your local area network (LAN), translating signals to allow Internet access. It supports DOCSIS 3.1, the latest standard for cable modem technology, which enables higher data transfer rates. The modem's primary function is to receive and send data over the cable network, providing the necessary connectivity for your devices to access the Internet.

Usage Features

The SB8200 is designed for straightforward installation and monitoring.

  • Installation: The modem can be set up either through the SURFboard Central app (SBC app) for a guided experience or by directly connecting it to a client device (laptop/desktop) with a wired Ethernet connection. For manual setup, you connect a coaxial cable to a wall outlet or RF splitter, then an Ethernet cable from the modem to your computer, and finally the power cord to an electrical wall outlet. It's crucial to use only the provided power supply to prevent damage. After physical connections, you need to contact your service provider to activate (provision) the SB8200, often requiring the HFC MAC ID found on the modem's label. Once provisioned, you can verify the Internet connection by opening a web browser and navigating to a valid URL.

  • Front Panel LED Indicators: The front panel features several LED icons that provide a quick visual status of the modem's operation:

    • Power: Indicates if the modem is properly connected to power (Green).
    • Receive: Shows the status of the downstream channel connection. A flashing light indicates scanning for a connection, while a solid Green light means it's connected in DOCSIS 3.0 mode. A solid Blue light signifies a high-speed Internet connection with downstream channels in DOCSIS 3.1 mode.
    • Send: Displays the status of the upstream channel connection. Flashing indicates scanning, solid Green means DOCSIS 3.0 mode, and solid Blue indicates DOCSIS 3.1 mode.
    • Online: Indicates the Internet connection status. Flashing means scanning for a connection, and solid Green means the cable modem is connected to the Internet.
  • Rear Panel Ports: The rear panel includes:

    • Ethernet Ports: Two RJ-45 ports for network cable connections. A Green LED indicates a GigE data connection, while an Amber LED signifies a 10/100 Mbps data connection.
    • Reset Button: An indented button used for rebooting the modem or restoring factory default settings.
    • Cable Connector: For connecting the coaxial cable.
    • Power Port: For connecting the power supply.
  • Web Manager: The SB8200 includes a Web Manager, accessible via a web browser by typing the default LAN IP address (192.168.100.1). This interface allows you to view and monitor the modem's operational status and network configuration settings.

    • Login: The default login username is "admin" and the default password is "password." If the default password doesn't work, the last eight digits of the serial number (S/N) on the modem label can be used.
    • Screen Options: The Web Manager offers various screens:
      • Status: Displays diagnostic information about the startup procedure, downstream and upstream bonded channels.
      • Product Information: Shows hardware and software versions, MAC address, serial number, system uptime, and network registration status.
      • Event Log: Provides a list of events detected by the modem, including time, priority, and description, useful for troubleshooting.
      • Addresses: Displays serial number, MAC addresses, and network connection details for connected computers.
      • Configuration: Lists network connection frequency and channel ID information. Note that most configuration settings are read-only and require service provider authorization to change.
      • Advanced: Provides an option to enable Ethernet Link Aggregation Configuration.
      • Change User Password: Allows you to change the default login password for enhanced security.
      • Help: Offers brief descriptions for each screen option and general troubleshooting tips.
  • Link Aggregation Configuration: The Advanced settings in the Web Manager allow you to enable Link Aggregation, which combines multiple network connections to increase throughput and provide redundancy.

Maintenance Features

The SB8200 incorporates features for basic maintenance and troubleshooting.

  • Reset Button Functionality: The Reset button on the rear panel serves two key maintenance functions:

    • Reboot (Restart): A quick press and hold (three to four seconds) will reboot the cable modem, which can resolve minor connectivity issues without altering settings.
    • Factory Default Reset: Pressing and holding the Reset button for 10 seconds or until the front panel LEDs flash will restore the modem to its factory default configuration settings. This process deletes current settings and can take five to 30 minutes to complete, disabling the network connection temporarily. This is useful for resolving persistent configuration problems.
  • Troubleshooting Tips: The user guide provides a dedicated troubleshooting section with solutions for common problems such as the Power LED being off, inability to send or receive data, or inability to access the Internet. It advises checking power and cable connections, verifying LED statuses, and contacting the service provider if issues persist.

  • Web Manager for Diagnostics: The Web Manager's "Event Log" screen is a crucial diagnostic tool, recording all events and activities. This log can be invaluable when contacting technical support, as it provides detailed information about potential problems.

  • Environmental Care: The device and its packaging are designed with recycling in mind, indicated by symbols encouraging proper disposal of electronic waste and recycling of packaging materials. Information on WEEE recycling is available on the manufacturer's website.

  • Safety Instructions: Important safety guidelines include not locating the device near water or heat sources, avoiding direct sunlight, cleaning with a dry, lint-free cloth, ensuring ventilation holes are not blocked, operating within specified temperature limits (104º F / 40º C), and grounding the coaxial cable shield to minimize voltage differences.
