Do you have a question about the Assa Abloy SARGENT 480 Series and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document provides installation instructions for the Sargent 480 Series Cylindrical Deadbolt, a security device designed for residential and commercial applications. The manual details the steps for preparing the door, installing the deadbolt components, and making necessary adjustments. It covers both single and double cylinder configurations.

Function Description

The Sargent 480 Series Cylindrical Deadbolt is a locking mechanism that provides enhanced security for doors. It operates by extending a bolt into a strike plate on the door frame, preventing unauthorized entry. The deadbolt is available in single cylinder and double cylinder configurations, offering flexibility based on security requirements.

  • Single Cylinder Deadbolt: This configuration features a key cylinder on the exterior side and a thumbturn on the interior side. The key operates the deadbolt from the outside, while the thumbturn allows for quick locking and unlocking from the inside without a key. This is a common choice for residential applications where quick egress is desired.

  • Double Cylinder Deadbolt: This configuration features a key cylinder on both the exterior and interior sides. A key is required to operate the deadbolt from both the outside and the inside. This provides increased security by preventing unauthorized entry or exit without a key, often used in situations where a higher level of control over egress is needed, such as in certain commercial or institutional settings.

The deadbolt mechanism includes a spring-loaded latch that allows the door to be closed and held in place before the deadbolt is engaged. The main deadbolt is operated independently of this latch.

Important Technical Specifications

The installation instructions highlight several critical dimensions and components:

  • Backset: The deadbolt is designed for a 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" backset. The backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the bore hole where the deadbolt mechanism is installed. This is a crucial measurement for proper alignment and operation.

  • Door Thickness: The deadbolt is suitable for door thicknesses ranging from 1-3/8" to 1-3/4". For thicker doors, specific instructions or additional components may be required. The manual emphasizes verifying door thickness for proper installation.

  • Bore Holes:

    • Main Bore Hole: A 2-1/8" diameter bore hole is required for the main deadbolt mechanism.
    • Latch Bore Hole: A 1" diameter bore hole is required for the deadbolt latch assembly. This hole should be drilled from the edge of the door.
  • Strike Plate: The strike plate dimensions are 1-1/4" x 2-3/4". This plate is installed on the door frame and receives the deadbolt.

  • Keyway Slot: The keyway slot dimensions are 3/4" x 2-1/4". This refers to the opening in the cylinder where the key is inserted.

  • Housing Size: The exterior housing (rose) for the deadbolt typically measures 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" or 2-3/4" x 2-3/4". The interior housing (rose) is also specified as 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" or 2-3/4" x 2-3/4".

  • Screws: The installation uses various screws, including:

    • Deadbolt screws: #8-32 x 3/4"
    • Mounting screws: #8-32 x 1-1/8"
    • Strike box screws: #8-32 x 2" (for wood frames)
  • Components: The deadbolt assembly includes:

    • Outside cylinder housing assembly
    • Inside blank plate (for single cylinder) or inside cylinder housing assembly (for double cylinder)
    • Housing ring
    • Mounting plate
    • Deadbolt
    • Tailpiece
    • Keyway slot
    • Interior rose
    • Strike box
    • Strike plate
    • Cylinder cap (for single cylinder)
    • Spring pin
    • Tailpiece stop
    • Spindles

Usage Features

The Sargent 480 Series Deadbolt is designed for ease of use and security.

  • Keyed Entry/Exit: The key cylinders provide secure access control.
  • Thumbturn Operation (Single Cylinder): The interior thumbturn allows for quick and convenient locking and unlocking without a key, which is beneficial for emergency egress.
  • Smooth Operation: Proper installation ensures smooth operation of the deadbolt, preventing binding or sticking. The instructions emphasize checking for free movement of the bolt.
  • Adjustable Tailpiece: The tailpiece is designed to be adjustable or reversible to accommodate different door thicknesses and orientations, ensuring proper engagement with the deadbolt mechanism.
  • Universal Handing: The deadbolt is designed to be non-handed or easily reversible, meaning it can be installed on both left-hand and right-hand doors without requiring specific handing. The latch bolt can be rotated to accommodate the door's swing.

Maintenance Features

The manual implicitly suggests several maintenance-related practices through its installation guidelines:

  • Proper Installation for Longevity: Adhering to the detailed installation steps, including correct bore hole sizes, backset, and alignment, is crucial for the long-term performance and durability of the deadbolt. Incorrect installation can lead to premature wear and malfunction.
  • Regular Cleaning: While not explicitly stated as a maintenance feature, the components are designed to be relatively easy to clean during installation. Keeping the mechanism free of debris can prevent operational issues.
  • Lubrication (Implied): Although not directly mentioned, periodic lubrication of the internal mechanism (e.g., the bolt and cylinder) with a suitable lubricant can help maintain smooth operation and extend the life of the deadbolt.
  • Component Replacement: The modular design of the deadbolt suggests that individual components, such as the cylinders or strike plate, could be replaced if damaged or worn, rather than requiring the replacement of the entire unit.
  • Troubleshooting: The instructions provide guidance on common issues during installation, such as the deadbolt binding or not operating smoothly, which can also serve as a basis for troubleshooting minor operational problems post-installation. For example, if the deadbolt binds, checking the alignment of the strike plate and the depth of the bore holes is recommended. If the cylinder does not turn freely, checking for obstructions or proper seating of the tailpiece is advised.
