Brix scale
Brix represents the weight of sucrose in 100 grams of sucrose solution as percentage by weight. When other dissolved
solids are present in the solution, Brix conversion may be applied.
Brix is a measure of the total dissolved solids in a solution and indicates the combined concentration of all soluble
substances, such as sugar, salt, protein, and acids.
Automatic Temperature Compensation
The readings are corrected, based on the temperature of the prism, within the automatic temperature compensation range.
Caution
Measurements may fluctuate with hot or cold samples. Wait for approximately 20 seconds to press the START button.
Measurements will stabilize once the instrument acclimates to the sample temperature.
Storage and Maintenance
Store the instrument in a dry place away from
direct sunlight. Exposure to humidity and heat
may damage the instrument.
Clean and dry the sample stage thoroughly,
following the “Cleaning” instructions.
Store the unit away from direct sunlight at a
stable temperature with as little fluctuation as
possible.

Overview

The ATAGO PAL-2 is a digital hand-held "Pocket" Refractometer designed for measuring Brix (the weight percentage of sucrose in a solution) and temperature. It can also be used to measure the total dissolved solids in a solution, indicating the combined concentration of all soluble substances like sugar, salt, protein, and acids.

Function Description:

The PAL-2 measures Brix and temperature, displaying the results on an LCD screen. It features automatic temperature compensation, correcting readings based on the prism's temperature within a specified range. The device is operated using a START button (which also serves as a POWER button) for measurements and a ZERO button for zero-setting. It includes a sample stage where water or samples are applied to the glass prism. The device also has a battery compartment and a lanyard hole for portability.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Measurement Range: 45.0 to 93.0% Brix (with Automatic Temperature Compensation) and 10.0 to 100°C.
  • Resolution: 0.1% Brix / 0.1°C.
  • Accuracy: ±0.2% Brix / ±1°C.
  • Automatic Temperature Compensation Range: 10 to 100°C.
  • Ambient Temperature Range: 10 to 40°C.
  • Sample Volume: At least 0.3mL.
  • Measurement Time: Approximately 3 seconds.
  • Backlight: Stays on for 30 seconds after any button is pressed.
  • Maximum Number of Data History: 100.
  • Output: NFC Forum Type 4 Tag, ISO/IEC 14443 Type A. Output categories include Date, Time, Brix (%), and Temp (degC).
  • Power Supply: Two (2) AAA alkaline batteries.
  • Battery Life: Approximately 11,000 measurements (when using alkaline batteries).
  • International Protection Class: IP65 (water-resistant, not waterproof, and should not be submerged).
  • Dimensions and Weight: 55 (W) x 31 (D) x 109 (H)mm, 100g (main unit only).
  • Chemical Resistance of Body Case: Made of resin; not resistant to water vapor, and some solvents may compromise structural integrity.

Usage Features:

  • Zero-setting: Recommended at the beginning of each day and after battery replacement. It involves applying about 0.3mL of tap water to the prism, waiting for it to acclimate, pressing the START button until "LLL" and prism temperature are displayed, then pressing the ZERO button while water is on the prism. Zero-setting is complete when "000" blinks twice and stops.
  • Measurement: After zero-setting, wipe the prism clean. Apply about 0.3mL of the sample to the prism, then press the START button. Measurements and prism temperature are displayed after "---" appears. For hot or cold samples, it's advised to wait approximately 20 seconds for the instrument to acclimate or press the START button multiple times until readings stabilize.
  • LCD Auto Shut-off: The instrument automatically turns off after 2 minutes of inactivity. To manually turn it off, hold down the START button for more than 2 seconds.
  • For Oily/Fatty Samples: Stirring the sample on the prism while measuring can improve repeatability.
  • Error Messages: The device displays various messages for low battery ("Lo"), nothing on prism during zero-setting ("AAA"), insufficient sample or measurement below range ("LLL"), measurement over range ("HHH"), prism temperature below/above range ("LLLC"/"HHHC"), and instrument fault ("EFF"). It also indicates when too much light is entering the prism.
  • Warranty: The instrument is warranted for one year from the date of purchase. This period can be extended to two years upon customer information registration. The warranty is void if the instrument has been disassembled, has prism/sample stage damage, water damage, has been dropped, misused, operated outside environmental specifications, or has battery leakage (other than included batteries).

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: The prism and sample stage should be cleaned thoroughly after each use. Use a mild soap and rinse with water, then dry with tissues. Avoid scratching the prism with metal tools. Do not use water above 50°C for rinsing.
  • Storage: Store the instrument in a dry place away from direct sunlight, humidity, and heat. Keep it at a stable temperature with minimal fluctuations.
  • Battery Replacement: When the battery icon indicates low power, replace both AAA alkaline batteries (1.5V). Ensure proper polarity. Fasten the battery compartment cover tightly to prevent water ingress; check the O-ring for dirt or damage. Zero-set the instrument after battery replacement.
  • International Protection (IP65): The instrument is water-resistant but not waterproof and should not be submerged.
  • General Care: Avoid dropping the instrument or subjecting it to strong physical shock, vibration, or extreme temperatures. Do not attempt to repair, modify, or disassemble the instrument. Avoid rapid changes in ambient temperature. Loosen the battery compartment cover for air transportation.
